Book Invasive Aquatic Species of Europe Distribution Impacts and Management

Download or read book Invasive Aquatic Species of Europe Distribution Impacts and Management written by Erkki Leppäkoski and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global scale of alien species invasions is becoming more and more evident in the beginning ofthe new millennium. Though the problem ofbiological invasions became a rapidly growing research area, there are large gaps still, both geographically and the matically, to be filled in the near future. This book is the first attempt to provide an overall picture of aquatic species invasions in Europe. Its geographical scope stretches from Irish waters in the west to Volga River and the Caspian Sea in the east, and from Mediterranean in the south up to the Arctic coast of Europe. Not all parts of the continent could be equally covered, as in some countries species invasions are not studied yet. The book tends to represent the array of all major European aquatic systems on the broadest geographical and ecological scope possible from fully saline seas, semi-enclosed brackish water bodies and coastallagoons to freshwater lakes, major river systems and waterways. The key objectives include the present status and impacts caused by non-native aquatic species in European waters. Please note that lengthy species lists submitted for publication and additional informa tion were put on the Internet, as the electronical version of these tables benefits from computer assisted search for data (http://www. ku. lt/nemo/EuroAquaInvaders. htm). Altogether more than 100 scientists from 24 countries have joined to synthesize the available information on bioinvasions. However, the book does not claim to be fully comprehensive.

Book Facing the Ocean

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this highly illustrated book Barry Cunliffe focuses on the western rim of Europe--the Atlantic facade--an area stretching from the Straits of Gibraltar to the Isles of Shetland. We are shown how original and inventive the communities were, and how they maintained their own distinctive identities often over long spans of time. Covering the period from the Mesolithic hunter-gatherers, c. 8000 BC, to the voyages of discovery c. AD 1500, he uses this last half millennium more as a well-studied test case to help the reader better understand what went before. The beautiful illustrations show how this picturesque part of Europe has many striking physical similarities. Old hard rocks confront the ocean creating promontories and capes familiar to sailors throughout the millennia. Land's End, Finistere, Finisterra--until the end of the fifteenth century this was where the world ended in a turmoil of ocean beyond which there was nothing. To the people who lived in these remote placesthe sea was their means of communication and those occupying similar locations were their neighbours. The communities frequently developed distinctive characteristics intensifying aspects of their culture the more clearly to distinguish themselves from their in-land neighbours. But there is an added level of interest here in that the sea provided a vital link with neighbouring remote-place communities encouraging a commonality of interest and allegiances. Even today the Bretons see themselvesas distinct from the French but refer to the Irish, Welsh, and Galicians as their brothers and cousins. Archaeological evidence from the prehistoric period amply demonstrates the bonds which developed and intensified between these isolated communities and helped to maintain a shared but distinctive Atlantic identity.

Book Spain Portugal and the Atlantic Frontier of Medieval Europe

Download or read book Spain Portugal and the Atlantic Frontier of Medieval Europe written by Jose-Juan Lopez-Portillo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 647 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As seen from the perspective of 1492, the medieval expansion of Latin Europe was nowhere as dramatic or enduring as in the Iberian Peninsula and the Atlantic. Its Christian kingdoms continued their advance against Al-Andalus up to 1492, whereas territorial expansion elsewhere against the Muslim world had either ceased or subsided by the late 13th century. Castile and Portugal also transformed the Atlantic Ocean from the inaccessible dead-end of Eurasia into the most promising avenue for European expansion for the first time in history. The articles collected in this volume explore the causes and the nature of this expansion, from a variety of historical traditions. They investigate the extent to which the ’transference’ of Mediterranean traditions aided this process; the characteristics of Iberian conflict that eventually led to the success of its Christian kingdoms; and the motives for launching, and techniques for running, the first European ’overseas empires’ in the unfolding Atlantic frontier. In the process they illuminate the new identities and cultural interactions that this expansion produced in its wake, while the new introduction sets them in the broader context.

Book Europe s Atlantic Coast

Download or read book Europe s Atlantic Coast written by and published by Maximilian Verlag. This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One motif, two photographers, two styles: Michael Pasdzior and Peter Haefcke traveled Europe's Atlantic coast in the past eight years. The result is a photographic art book that lives from its contrasts. While Haefcke takes his pictures in black and white, Pasdzior photographs in color. The Atlantic coast presents itself just as contradictory: Sometimes original, wild and rough, sometimes altered by human hands and embossed. The moody photographs and the elaborate design as a turning book make Europe's Atlantic Coast equally attractive for photography fans and coast-lovers.

Book excerpt: For his new photo book, Shaped by the sea, photographer Theo Bosboom explored the Atlantic coast of Europe, in every season and in all kind of weather conditions. The multi-year project lead him to spectacular beaches ? both known and unknown ? in Norway, Iceland, the Faroe Islands, Scotland, Ireland, Northern Ireland, France, Portugal and Spain. The book is a tribute to the power of the sea and to the dynamics of the beach. It shows how the sea is constantly changing and shaping the landscape, it highlights some of the creatures living in the intertidal zone (for instance the limpets and sea snails) and it reveals the variety of geological features along Europe's west coast. All this photographed in his own personal style, with a focus on details and often with a fresh perspective.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The North Atlantic and its adjacent waters are among the most dangerous in the world. Countless shipwrecks speak for a rough ocean. And yet, these seas are rich in wildlife like playful dolphins and colorful puffins. Ignoring the hazards and curiously, almost obsessed by sailing the European Atlantic, George and his wife cast-off in the Baltic to an open-end adventure. They sailed to Norway, Scotland, the Hebrides, the Iberian peninsular and promptly fell in love with these countries and their people. The nature in Norway is breathtaking, wildlife on the Hebrides stunning, Scotland is divine, the beer in Dublin is cold, and the sun nearly always shines in southern Europe. With autumn approaching, the Atlantic Ocean faced its first hurricane on the European side in history and underlined its reputation. The crew took it easy and saw what they hoped to see and much more. Then a virus came along, silently, mysteriously, and ruined all travel plans. Relaxing with each day passing by, the crew realized, live and perceive the moment.
