Book Atlanta Greeks An Early History

Download or read book Atlanta Greeks An Early History written by Stephen P. Georgeson and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2015 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By 1890, the first Greek immigrants to Atlanta had settled into an area still widely populated by Confederate veterans. In a city without the large immigrant presence common in the nation's major urban areas, the Greeks were initially received as undesirable visitors by the state's and city's leaders. While the Greek Orthodox Church of Atlanta endured financial hardship, it continued to aid funerals, hospitals and orphanages. These Greeks moved from the city's streets as fruit vendors into more established businesses. Christ Gyfteas's fruit stand at the corner of Broad and Marietta became the California Fruit Company. By 1911, 40 percent of Greeks were proprietors or partners in a variety of businesses like cafs, restaurants, soda fountains and groceries. Author Stephen Georgeson explores the Greek immigrants' experiences in their first three decades in Atlanta.

Talk to your neighbor who is able to subscribe- and if he happens to be one of these really close men who is afraid to trust anybody, make him one of the trustees. You raise the money- I say, to build that furnace., You raise it for the purpose of doing what I told you, and the balance will come to you. Show your faith by your works first, and, when you have done that, you will live to bless the day when you made up your minds to cut your wheat yourselves. [Applause.J KEELY, CAPTAIN JOHN. For nearly a quarter of a century there was no name better known in Atlanta, if indeed in the whole State of Georgia, than that of the late Captain John Keely, and no commercial history of the city of his home and honorable achievements would be complete which failed to give prominent mention of his successful career. He was born in the beautiful little village of Newtownbarry, county of Wexford, Ireland, in 1839. and 's a son of Thomas and Cecelia Keely. After having received a good English education in his native town, at the age of twelve years he began his business career in Dublin as a clerk in a dry goods store. He was employed for seven years in this capacity and displayed such capability that, at the end of this time, he was employed to fill a situation at the head of a department in the largest dry goods house in Quebec, Canada. Reaching that city he remained there one year, when, having completed his engagement, he went to New York. He was kept busy in New York about twenty months, having charge of the silk department in one of the leading dry goods houses in the metropolis. Having...

  • ISBN : 1849667772
  • Pages : 240 pages

Download or read book Pausanias written by Maria Pretzler and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2013-10-16 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Maria Pretzler combines a thorough introduction to Pausanias with exciting new perspectives. She considers the process and influences that shaped the "Periegesis", and maps out its literary and cultural context. Pausanias' text records contemporary interpretations of monuments and traditions, and is concerned with the identity and history of Greece, issues that were crucial concerns for Greeks under Roman rule. Parallels with various texts of the period offer insights into Pausanias' attitudes as well as illustrating important aspects of Second Sophistic culture. A discussion of Greek texts that deal with fictional or actual travel experiences provides a background for a detailed study of the Periegesis as travel literature. Pausanias' treatment of geography and his descriptions of landscapes, cities and artworks are considered in detail, and there is also a study of his methods as a historian. The final chapters deal with Pausanias' impact on modern approaches to Greece and ancient Greek culture.

Book excerpt: In this new series leading classical scholars interpret afresh the ancient world for the modern reader. They stress those questions and institutions that most concern us today: the interplay between economic factors and politics, the struggle to find a balance between the state and the individual, the role of the intellectual. Most of the books in this series centre on the great focal periods, those of great literature and art: the world of Herodotus and the tragedians, Plato and Aristotle, Cicero and Caesar, Virgil, Horace and Tacitus. This study traces Greek science through the work of the Pythagoreans, the Presocratic natural philosophers, the Hippocratic writers, Plato, the fourth-century B.C. astronomers and Aristotle. G. E. R. Lloyd also investigates the relationships between science and philosophy and science and medicine; he discusses the social and economic setting of Greek science; he analyses the motives and incentives of the different groups of writers.
