Book excerpt: Bhartrihari occupies a prominent place among the ancient poets of Sanskrit literature. The King turned hermit and a great poet, Bhartrihari, in Vairagyashatakam, leads us onto the path of inner peace and equilibrium. His advice is practical, easy to follow and result oriented. Long before the modern man discovered a health spa in Rishikesh or on the banks of the Ganges or in God's own country, Kerala, Bhartrihari laid down in Vairagyashatakam, the same approach to health and happiness.

Book excerpt: An award-winning translator finds surprisingly modern themes in a selection of erotic and religious stanzas from one of classical India's most celebrated poets. Although few facts are known about his life, the Indian poet Bhartrihari leaps from the page as a remarkably recognizable individual. Amidst a career as a linguist, courtier, and hermit, he used poetry to explore themes of love, desire, impermanence, despair, anger, and fear. “A thousand emotions, ideas, words, and rhythmic syllables stormed through him,” writes translator Andrew Schelling in an evocative introduction. “In particular he shows himself torn between sexual desire and a hunger to be free of failed love affairs and turbulent karma.” Schelling’s translation represents a rare opportunity for English-language readers to become acquainted with this fascinating poet. Attuned to Bhartrihari’s unique poetic sensibility, Schelling has produced a compelling, personally curated set of translations.

In Three Hundred Verses, Bhartrihari, one of the greatest Sanskrit poets of all time, brilliantly expounds on our most enduring concerns and dilemmas: living, loving and leaving. Although composed centuries ago, the full force of his genius is abundantly evident in these poems, bursting with lush imagery and brimming with deep philosophical musings. Book Siva s Warriors

    Book Details:
  • Author :
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press
  • Release : 2014-07-14
  • ISBN : 1400860903
  • Pages : 340 pages

Download or read book Siva s Warriors written by and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is the first translation into English of the Basava Purana, a fascinating collection of tales that sums up and characterizes one of the most important and most radical religious groups of South India. The ideas of the Virasaivas, or militant Saivas, are represented in those tales by an intriguing mix of outrageous excess and traditional conservatism. Written in Telugu in the thirteenth century, the Basava Purana is an anthology of legends of Virasaivas saints and a hagiography of Basavesvara, the twelfth-century Virasaiva leader. This translation makes accessible a completely new perspective on this significant religious group. Although Telugu is one of the major cultural traditions of India, with a classical literature reaching back to the eleventh century, until now there has been no translation or exposition of any of the Telugu Virasaiva works in English. The introduction orients the reader to the text and helps in an understanding of the poet's point of view. The author of the Basava Purana, Palkuriki Somanatha, is revered as a saint by Virasaivas in Andhra and Karnataka. His books are regarded as sacred texts, and he is also considered to be a major poet in Telugu and Kannada. Originally published in 1990. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Download or read book Enjoyable Sanskrit Grammar written by Medha Michika and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-10-10 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the revision of the book "Sanskrit Grammar for Vedanta Students." This series provides basic Sanskrit grammar which is sufficient to allow the student to read slokas and commentaries on Bhagavad Gita. I changed the title to "Enjoyable Sanskrit Grammar" because the more I teach the more I find that the impediment in learning Sanskrit is not intellectual, but psychological. As repeatedly emphasized by my respected guru, Sri Pujya Svami Dayananda Sarasvati, it is important to be relaxed and make the study enjoyable. In this book the presentation of the topics is based purely on the tradition, but at the same time I have tried to make it easily understandable by the student in the modern scheme. Throughout this series of grammar books, the knowledge of Sanskrit grammar is presented for understanding, rather than just memorizing. Only when the grammar and Panini's system to explain the grammar are understood, can one fully enjoy the language and the knowledge given through it. This series of books is therefore useful not only for students of scriptures in Sanskrit, but also for those who just want to gain an overview of the linguistics aspect of the Sanskrit language.

Book Bhagavad G t

    Book Details:
  • Author : Madhusūdana Sarasvatī
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 1998
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 1054 pages

Download or read book Bhagavad G t written by Madhusūdana Sarasvatī and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 1054 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Madhusudana Sarasvati's most famous work, Advaitasiddhi, helped to establish monism on a logical basis by refuting all criticisms of it by other schools. In his commentary on the Bhagavad Gita, however, he set forth a philosophy of life which also recognised other ways of spiritual development -- such as Yoga, devotion to God, and the analytical penetration of Samkhya. Here, Madhusudana gave the highest place to the cultivation of devotion. The present work of Madhusudana, the Gudhartha Dipika (an Annotation Revealing the True Import of the Gita) is probably the greatest of his many literary works. Though there are many classical commentaries on the Gita, this work stands next only to Sri Shankaracharya's commentary as regards clarity, depth, and originality.

Book Adi Shankaracharya Hinduisms Greatest Thinker

Download or read book Adi Shankaracharya Hinduisms Greatest Thinker written by Pavan K. Varma and published by Westland. This book was released on 2022-11-15 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About the Book A COMPREHENSIVELY RESEARCHED BOOK ON THE LIFE AND PHILOSOPHY OF ADI SHANKARACHARYA What is Brahman? What is its relationship to Atman? What is an individual’s place in the cosmos? Is a personalised god and ritualistic worship the only path to attain moksha? Does caste matter when a human is engaging with the metaphysical world? The answers to these perennial questions sparkle with clarity in this seminal account of a man and a saint, who revived Hinduism and gave to Upanishadic insights a rigorously structured and sublimely appealing philosophy. Jagad Guru Adi Shankaracharya (788–820 CE) was born in Kerala and died in Kedarnath, traversing the length of India in his search for the ultimate truth. In a short life of thirty-two years, Shankaracharya not only revived Hinduism, but also created the organisational structure for its perpetuation through the mathas he established in Sringeri, Dwaraka, Puri and Joshimatha. Adi Shankaracharaya: Hinduism’s Greatest Thinker is a meticulously researched and comprehensive account of his life and philosophy. Highly readable, and including a select anthology of Shankaracharya’s seminal writing, the book also examines the startling endorsement that contemporary science is giving to his ideas today. A must-read for people across the ideological spectrum, this book reminds readers about the remarkable philosophical underpinning of Hinduism, making it one of the most vibrant religions in the world.
