La obra se organiza en 12 unidades, que desarrollan los siguientes temas: la asistencia sanitaria en emergencias; el sistema nervioso; el aparato cardiocirculatorio; el aparato respiratorio; la parada cardiaca; soporte vital básico en adultos; soporte vital básico en víctimas pediátricas; obstrucción y manejo de la vía aérea; soporte vital intermedio; atención a múltiples víctimas; clasificación de las víctimas: el triaje; situaciones especiales en emergencias. Es importante destacar que todas las unidades están diseñadas desde dos puntos de vista: el del docente, en cuanto a la forma, la estructura, las actividades y los recursos de cada unidad; y el de los profesionales de emergencias sanitarias. La combinación de ambos enfoques permite una enseñanza completa, útil y eficaz, tanto para el proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje como para la futura vida profesional de los alumnos. Asimismo, cada unidad ofrece multitud de recursos para profesores y alumnos. Cuenta con gran número de esquemas, imágenes, tablas, actividades propuestas y cuadros aclaratorios o de información adicional, para ilustrar y poner en práctica los contenidos teóricos y ayudar a una mejor comprensión de estos. Además, el mapa conceptual al término de cada unidad muestra el recorrido en el proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje. Por último, se incluyen actividades finales de comprobación, aplicación e investigación, con el objetivo de que los alumnos desarrollen distintas capacidades de estudio. Por ello, esta obra, fruto de la experiencia docente de su autora, es una útil herramienta para profesores y alumnos de este módulo.

Book excerpt: Confronted with worldwide evidence of substantial public health harm due to inadequate patient safety, the World Health Assembly (WHA) in 2002 adopted a resolution (WHA55.18) urging countries to strengthen the safety of health care and monitoring systems. The resolution also requested that WHO take a lead in setting global norms and standards and supporting country efforts in preparing patient safety policies and practices. In May 2004, the WHA approved the creation of an international alliance to improve patient safety globally; WHO Patient Safety was launched the following October. For the first time, heads of agencies, policy-makers and patient groups from around the world came together to advance attainment of the goal of "First, do no harm" and to reduce the adverse consequences of unsafe health care. The purpose of WHO Patient Safety is to facilitate patient safety policy and practice. It is concentrating its actions on focused safety campaigns called Global Patient Safety Challenges, coordinating Patients for Patient Safety, developing a standard taxonomy, designing tools for research policy and assessment, identifying solutions for patient safety, and developing reporting and learning initiatives aimed at producing 'best practice' guidelines. Together these efforts could save millions of lives by improving basic health care and halting the diversion of resources from other productive uses. The Global Patient Safety Challenge, brings together the expertise of specialists to improve the safety of care. The area chosen for the first Challenge in 2005-2006, was infection associated with health care. This campaign established simple, clear standards for hand hygiene, an educational campaign and WHO's first Guidelines on Hand Hygiene in Health Care. The problem area selected for the second Global Patient Safety Challenge, in 2007-2008, was the safety of surgical care. Preparation of these Guidelines for Safe Surgery followed the steps recommended by WHO. The groundwork for the project began in autumn 2006 and included an international consultation meeting held in January 2007 attended by experts from around the world. Following this meeting, expert working groups were created to systematically review the available scientific evidence, to write the guidelines document and to facilitate discussion among the working group members in order to formulate the recommendations. A steering group consisting of the Programme Lead, project team members and the chairs of the four working groups, signed off on the content and recommendations in the guidelines document. Nearly 100 international experts contributed to the document (see end). The guidelines were pilot tested in each of the six WHO regions--an essential part of the Challenge--to obtain local information on the resources required to comply with the recommendations and information on the feasibility, validity, reliability and cost-effectiveness of the interventions.

Many become pregnant due to negligent care that deprives them of the right to make independent decisions about their health and lives. Others are forced to carry life-threatening pregnancies to term because medical providers refuse to provide abortions services that, in these circumstances, are legal. Some choose to seek alternative and at times highly unsafe abortions from unlicensed providers. Others forgo care entirely, and some even die. In 2008, according to Argentina's national health ministry, over 20 percent of deaths recorded due to obstetric emergencies were caused by unsafe abortions. Over the past 10 years, Argentina has accumulated an impressive artillery of reproductive and sexual health related policies. Though they ignore key constituencies such as women with disabilities, these policies would, if implemented, go a long way to overcoming the suffering documented in this report and elsewhere. But the laws and policies intended to benefit women and girls--such as the legal exceptions to the general criminalization of abortion--often go unimplemented. Moreover, the absence of oversight and accountability for this failure indicates that few in authority seem to care. For the state, the resulting and pressing public health concerns such as preventable maternal mortality, unsafe abortion, and unwanted pregnancies, are also costly. The ultimate human consequence of this lack of accountability is suffering, and sometimes even death."--Page 4 of cover.
