But, the villagers are prone to gossip about young Harry’s past, and one person in particular cannot forgive him for tearing down the old house. Will Miss Marple’s acumen be up to the task of solving the story?

In each of these sectors Atelier 13 applies its unitary notion of architecture, focusing on technical / functional precision, paying the closest possible attention to environmental factors of both a physical and historical nature, and turning design into an opportunity for deep aesthetic and social analysis.

Download or read book The Evolution of Urban Heritage Conservation and the Role of Raymond Lemaire written by Claudine Houbart and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-08-13 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1960s and 1970s saw a marked change in the approach to built heritage conservation. From a focus on the preservation of individual buildings, attention turned to the conservation, regeneration, and reuse of entire historic districts. A key player in this process was the Belgian art and architecture historian Raymond Lemaire (1921–1997), yet beyond those in conservation circles few people know of his work and influence or even recognize his name. In this book, Claudine Houbart traces how the change came about and the role played by Lemaire. She describes his work and influence and in so doing provides a history of urban conservation over the last four decades of the twentieth century and beyond. The first chapter summarizes Lemaire’s background from his training during the Second World War and his work as a Monuments Man immediately after the war, to his role in the drafting of the Venice Charter and his appointment as Secretary General of ICOMOS (International Council on Monuments and Sites). The next chapter describes the rehabilitation of Great Beguinage in Louvain. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the project was directed by Lemaire and is a perfect example of the restoration of an entire district. The following chapter provides case studies of his work in Brussels, demonstrating his methodology in action. The final chapter discusses the transposition of the model of the historic city to urban projects and summarizes Lemaire’s influence on heritage conservation today, particularly integrated conservation. His participation in drafting key conservation documents sponsored by the Council of Europe, UNESCO and ICOMOS, and his desire to revise the Venice Charter are discussed. The book’s conclusion reflects on what has gone before, ending aptly with Lemaire’s own words ‘the past, properly understood, is one of the references for judging the value of today and tomorrow’.

Book excerpt: "The design of the UCB Center in the form of a semicircle is simple and luminous; two curved wings connected by a raised glass walkway enclose the granite foundation. Combining the modernity of a curtain wall with the perennial appeal of stone, this sober style of architecture is free of borrowed decorative effects." "Designed by the architectural firm Assar and built on the urban periphery of Brussels, the building reflects the image of the company that occupies it - UCB, the Belgian pharmaceutical and chemical company whose future and outlook are closely tied to international markets." "UCB Center by Assar tells the story of the building and its conception with detailed sketches and photographic illustrations. The text includes the professional viewpoint of the architects involved, as well as the opinions of the client as construction proceeded."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Download or read book The Practice Turn in Architecture Brussels after 1968 written by Dr Isabelle Doucet and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2015-11-28 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brussels, a complex city with a turbulent architectural and urban past, forms a compelling case for examining the tensions between urban politics, architectural imaginations, society’s needs and desires, and the city’s history and fabric. Inspired by pragmatist-relational philosophies, this book tests the potential of criticality through-practice. It studies a series of critical actions and tools, which occurred in Brussels’ architectural and urban culture after 1968. In addition, by showing how pragmatist-relational philosophies can be made relevant for architectural theory, the book opens hopeful potentials for how architectural theory can better contribute to the formulation of a critical agenda for architecture.
