Book The Idea of the Labyrinth from Classical Antiquity through the Middle Ages

Download or read book The Idea of the Labyrinth from Classical Antiquity through the Middle Ages written by Penelope Reed Doob and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-03-15 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ancient and medieval labyrinths embody paradox, according to Penelope Reed Doob. Their structure allows a double perspective—the baffling, fragmented prospect confronting the maze-treader within, and the comprehensive vision available to those without. Mazes simultaneously assert order and chaos, artistry and confusion, articulated clarity and bewildering complexity, perfected pattern and hesitant process. In this handsomely illustrated book, Doob reconstructs from a variety of literary and visual sources the idea of the labyrinth from the classical period through the Middle Ages. Doob first examines several complementary traditions of the maze topos, showing how ancient historical and geographical writings generate metaphors in which the labyrinth signifies admirable complexity, while poetic texts tend to suggest that the labyrinth is a sign of moral duplicity. She then describes two common models of the labyrinth and explores their formal implications: the unicursal model, with no false turnings, found almost universally in the visual arts; and the multicursal model, with blind alleys and dead ends, characteristic of literary texts. This paradigmatic clash between the labyrinths of art and of literature becomes a key to the metaphorical potential of the maze, as Doob's examination of a vast array of materials from the classical period through the Middle Ages suggests. She concludes with linked readings of four "labyrinths of words": Virgil's Aeneid, Boethius' Consolation of Philosophy, Dante's Divine Comedy, and Chaucer's House of Fame, each of which plays with and transforms received ideas of the labyrinth as well as reflecting and responding to aspects of the texts that influenced it. Doob not only provides fresh theoretical and historical perspectives on the labyrinth tradition, but also portrays a complex medieval aesthetic that helps us to approach structurally elaborate early works. Readers in such fields as Classical literature, Medieval Studies, Renaissance Studies, comparative literature, literary theory, art history, and intellectual history will welcome this wide-ranging and illuminating book.

Book Musicologia

    Book Details:
  • Author : Robin Maconie
  • Publisher : Scarecrow Press
  • Release : 2010-07-09
  • ISBN : 1461664217
  • Pages : 543 pages

Download or read book Musicologia written by Robin Maconie and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2010-07-09 with total page 543 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Musicologia—meaning "musical reasoning" as distinct from a mere love of music—author and composer Robin Maconie takes aim against the fashionable misconception that music is empty of meaning, or "auditory cheesecake." Fresh and penetrating insights draw attention to the influence of musical analogy in the history of science and philosophy from ancient Greece to modern times. Since music has always existed, it is an expression of human consciousness. The discoveries of Pythagoras, Zeno, Kepler, Newton, and Einstein would not have been possible without a tradition of musical acoustics. The story of Musicologia unfolds in thirty-one chapters from primordial considerations of silence, communication, selfhood, balance, and motion to focus on more recent and specific issues of chaos, order, relativity, and artificial intelligence, showing that even the most controversial aspects of modern art music form part of a wider endeavor to engage with universal propositions of science and philosophy.

Book The Fiction of Andr Pieyre de Mandiargues

Download or read book The Fiction of Andr Pieyre de Mandiargues written by David J. Bond and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 1982-10-01 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Novelist, Poet, critic, and writer of short stories, Andre Pieyre de Mandiargues has won considerable praise in France for his highly imaginative work and exquisite poetic style. His 1967 novel La Marge won the Prix Goncourt. Following an introductory biographical chapter in this first full-length critical study of Mandiargues, David bond discusses Mandiargues’s novels and a selection of short stories, finding recurring thematic patterns in his haunting and magical dream world. Bond maintains that the French writer uses fantasy, symbolic statement, and mythical and frankly erotic motifs to explore some of the oldest, most persistent human preoccupation-time, destiny, the beyond, salvation, love-themes that for him defy logical expression. Bond concludes with a discussion of Mandiargues's relationship to other contemporary writers and especially to the surrealists. Bibliography, notes, and index are included, along with a rare painting of Mandiargues by his wife, Bona.

Book The Central and the Peripheral

Download or read book The Central and the Peripheral written by Jakub Lipski and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-09-26 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Representing reality in terms of secure, familiar centres and dangerous, lesser known peripheries is one of the most elementary human cognitive instincts. However, we live in a world where this established division is becoming more and more problematic. One person’s periphery can be another’s centre, and many simple geographies of the world and of the mind, clearly separating the known from the unknown, have become obsolete. How can one reconcile this complexity with the fact that human thinking cannot escape the centre/periphery dichotomy? How is it possible to find one’s way in a world in which peripheries become centres, and centres turn into peripheries? The chapters of this book try to determine how the problem of centres and peripheries has been dealt with in the domains of literature and culture. The contributors focus on different aspects of the issue – from travel writing, through attempts at mapping the self, to finding central and peripheral territories in narrative itself.
