Book Christ the Heart of Creation

Download or read book Christ the Heart of Creation written by Rowan Williams and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-09-06 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this wide-ranging book, Rowan Williams argues that what we say about Jesus Christ is key to understanding what Christian belief says about creator and creation overall. Through detailed discussion of texts from the earliest centuries to the present day, we are shown some of the various and subtle ways in which Christians have discovered in their reflections on Christ the possibility of a deeply affirmative approach to creation, and a set of radical insights in ethics and politics as well. Throughout his life, Rowan Williams has been deeply influenced by thinkers of the Eastern Christian tradition as well as Catholic and Anglican writers. This book draws on insights from Eastern Christianity, from the Western Middle Ages and from Reformed thinkers, from Calvin to Bonhoeffer – as well as considering theological insights sparked by philosophers like Kierkegaard and Wittgenstein. Christ the Heart of Creation concerns fundamental issues for Christian belief and Williams tackles them head-on: he writes with pellucid clarity and shows his gift for putting across what are inevitably complex ideas to a wide audience.

Book At One With the Heart of Creation

Download or read book At One With the Heart of Creation written by John P. Cock and published by Transcribe Books. This book was released on 2003-11 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 23 Reflections and 26 Pieces of Verse, etc. (COVER REMARKS) by Thomas Berry, to whom book is dedicated, author of THE DREAM OF THE EARTH, cultural historian and geologian: "As we awaken, in this new millennium, to a dynamic, hitherto scarcely dreamed of future in every phase of life, John Cock's latest book sounds a clarion call for our participation in the great enterprise of enhancing communion between the human and the other-than-human components of the sacred earth community." (MASTER IMAGE) A book about the spirit journey of communion with the power at the heart of creation that motivates us humans to be agents of intercommunion. (From the INTRODUCTION) Section one is about linking our understanding of creation and its interior power to our current human condition: the people of this planet are dispirited. Yet, we are on a spirit journey which is not about "me as a person" but is about "me in relation with all others," human and non-human. The truth we are missing is that spirit happens in the relation between the other and me, or spirit happens in the relations of creation. In this section we explore spirit's presence in everyday life and the dynamics of the spirit journey. In section two, . . . How do we begin to deal with the contradiction of our time, which is spirit disrelation? Answer: we become more aware of our experiences of communion with spirit. In section three . . . the focus is the mission of creation as mutual care or intercommunion . . . a way to talk about our resolve and action to comprehensively interrelate with and care for creation as it cares for us. . . . The change we envision will not come from the ought of sustainability, will not come from more democratic governments, more economic prosperity, or a better educated populace. It will come from a more conscious spirit journey of communion and intercommunion of a growing movement of people around the planet.

Book From Nature to Creation The Church and Postmodern Culture

Download or read book From Nature to Creation The Church and Postmodern Culture written by Norman Wirzba and published by Baker Academic. This book was released on 2015-09-23 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does Christianity change the way we view the natural world? In this addition to a critically acclaimed series, renowned theologian Norman Wirzba engages philosophers, environmentalists, and cultural critics to show how the modern concept of nature has been deeply problematic. He explains that understanding the world as creation rather than as nature or the environment makes possible an imagination shaped by practices of responsibility and gratitude, which can help bring healing to our lands and communities. By learning to give thanks for creation as God's gift of life, Christians bear witness to the divine love that is reconciling all things to God. Download or read book The Many and the One written by Yonghua Ge and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-05-03 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How God relates to the world lies at the heart of the most intense debates in modern theology and philosophy. Movements of Nouvelle Théologie, process theology, radical orthodoxy, modern Trinitarian theology and postmodern theology (i.e. Jean-Luc Marion) all seek to reconsider God’s relation to the world as a corrective of what they perceive as problematic. Of particular significance is the recent revival of the theology of participation, as promoted by Radical Orthodoxy in UK and Hans Boersma in North America. Facing excessive secularism and fragmentation of the modern Western world, Radical Orthodoxy and Boersma resort to the pre-modern theology of participation as the way forward. Relying heavily on Platonism, however, their participatory theology, as critics pointed out, tends to compromise the intrinsic goodness of the creation. In this book, Ge proposes that a distinctively Christian theology of participation anchored in creatio ex nihilo, developed by Augustine and brought to the fore by Aquinas, provides a more promising solution which not only secures the unity of things in God but also the goodness of creaturely plurality. Since participation in its origin is a solution to the problem of the One and the Many, Ge employs Gunton’s framework of the one and the many in his discussion of Augustine and Aquinas’s theologies of participation. By reshaping their concepts of participation in the light of the doctrine of creation, Ge argues, these thinkers have profoundly transformed the metaphysics of participation, making it finally more suitable for describing the unique relationship between God’s unity and creaturely plurality. This Christian metaphysics of participation is not only an advance on Radical Orthodoxy and Boersma, but also superior to competing theories of reality such as pluralism and reductionist physicalism. The book will also bring out implications for modern science-religion dialogues, the core of which concerns how God relates to the world.

Book excerpt: The Language of Creation is a commentary on the primeval stories from the book of Genesis. It is often difficult to recognize the spiritual wisdom contained in these narratives because the current scientific worldview is deeply rooted in materialism. Therefore, instead of looking at these stories through the lens of modern academic disciplines, such as sociology, psychology, or the physical sciences, this commentary attempts to interpret the Bible from its own cosmological perspective.By contemplating the ancient biblical model of the universe, The Language of Creation demonstrates why these stories are foundational to western science and civilization. It rediscovers the archaic cosmic patterns of heaven, earth, time, and space, and sees them repeated at different levels of reality. These fractal-like structures are first encountered in the narrative of creation and then in the stories of the Garden of Eden, Cain and Abel, and the flood. The same patterns are also revealed in the visions of Ezekiel, the book of Daniel, and the miracles of Moses. The final result of this contemplation is a vision of the cosmos centered on the role of human consciousness in creation.
