Book excerpt: In this book we present the main results on the asymptotic theory of ordinary linear differential equations and systems where there is a small parameter in the higher derivatives. We are concerned with the behaviour of solutions with respect to the parameter and for large values of the independent variable. The literature on this question is considerable and widely dispersed, but the methods of proofs are sufficiently similar for this material to be put together as a reference book. We have restricted ourselves to homogeneous equations. The asymptotic behaviour of an inhomogeneous equation can be obtained from the asymptotic behaviour of the corresponding fundamental system of solutions by applying methods for deriving asymptotic bounds on the relevant integrals. We systematically use the concept of an asymptotic expansion, details of which can if necessary be found in [Wasow 2, Olver 6]. By the "formal asymptotic solution" (F.A.S.) is understood a function which satisfies the equation to some degree of accuracy. Although this concept is not precisely defined, its meaning is always clear from the context. We also note that the term "Stokes line" used in the book is equivalent to the term "anti-Stokes line" employed in the physics literature.

The body of research now accumulated is overwhelming, and many books and reports have appeared on one or another of the multiple aspects of the new line of research which some authors call "qualitative theory of differential equations". The purpose of the present volume is to present many of the view points and questions in a readable short report for which completeness is not claimed. The bibliographical notes in each section are intended to be a guide to more detailed expositions and to the original papers. Some traditional topics such as the Sturm comparison theory have been omitted. Also excluded were all those papers, dealing with special differential equations motivated by and intended for the applications.

This problem is a generalization of the regu larly perturbed Cauchy problem studied by Poincare [35]. Some differential equations which are solved by the averaging method can be reduced to a quasiregular Cauchy problem. As an example, in Chapter 2 we consider the van der Pol problem. In Part 2 we study the Tikhonov problem. This is, a Cauchy problem for a system of ordinary differential equations where the coefficients by the derivatives are integer degrees of a small parameter.

Due to the close connection between the second order differential operators with a non-negative characteristic form on the one hand and Markov processes on the other, many problems in PDE's can be reformulated as problems for corresponding stochastic processes and vice versa. In the present book four classes of problems are considered: - the Dirichlet problem with a small parameter in higher derivatives for differential equations and systems - the averaging principle for stochastic processes and PDE's - homogenization in PDE's and in stochastic processes - wave front propagation for semilinear differential equations and systems. From the probabilistic point of view, the first two topics concern random perturbations of dynamical systems. The third topic, homog- enization, is a natural problem for stochastic processes as well as for PDE's. Wave fronts in semilinear PDE's are interesting examples of pattern formation in reaction-diffusion equations. The ambitious plans of covering a large number of topics were later abandoned in favor of the present goal: a thorough discussion of selected ideas and techniques used in the method of matched asymptotic expansions. Thus many problems and methods are not covered here: the method of av eraging and the related method of multiple scales are mentioned mainly to give reasons why they are not discussed further. Examples which required too sophis ticated and involved calculations, or advanced knowledge of a special field, are not treated; for instance, to the author's regret some very interesting applications to fluid mechanics had to be omitted for this reason. Artificial mathematical examples introduced to show some exotic or unexpected behavior are omitted, except when they are analytically simple and are needed to illustrate mathematical phenomena important for realistic problems. Such a system is said to be weakly nonlinear. The small terms rendering the system nonlinear are referred to as perturbations. A weakly nonlinear system is called quasi-linear and is governed by quasi-linear differential equations. We will be interested in systems that reduce to harmonic oscillators in the absence of perturbations. This book is devoted primarily to applied asymptotic methods in nonlinear oscillations which are associated with the names of N. M. Krylov, N. N. Bogoli ubov and Yu. A. Mitropolskii. The advantages of the present methods are their simplicity, especially for computing higher approximations, and their applicability to a large class of quasi-linear problems. In this book, we confine ourselves basi cally to the scheme proposed by Krylov, Bogoliubov as stated in the monographs [6,211. We use these methods, and also develop and improve them for solving new problems and new classes of nonlinear differential equations.
