Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classical and quantal nonrelativistic scattering between simple atomic systems is reviewed, and most approximations currently used in calculations on electron capture are discussed. The OBK interaction is generalized to include capture from neutral atoms by singly charged many-electron ions; the sum over the squares of the vector coupling coefficients is affected in the formula for the OBK cross section for p-orbital capture by protons into H(ns). The cross section for H(+) + H(1s) to H(Sigma n1) + H(+) at high impact energies is determined classically. The second Born amplitudes at high impact energies for H(+) + H(1s) to H(1s) + H(+) and H(+) + D(1s) to H(1s) + D(+) are evaluated approximately using the Green's function of the post Hamiltonian. Two modifications of Thomas' classical model for heavy atoms are proposed, and corresponding cross sections are calculated for H(+) + B to H(Sigma n1) + B(+) with B = O, N, Ne, A, Kr, Xe. A semiclassical theory is developed for charge transfer in alkali atom-alkali-ion collision at low impact velocities, and cross sections are obtained for H, Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs. OBK cross sections are calculated for s-orbital capture from He(1s(2)), N((4)S), O((3)P), and p-orbital capture from N((4)S), O((3)P), all for incident protons capturing into H(1s). Born prior and post cross sections are calculated for H(+) + O((3)P) to H(1s) + O(+)((4)S) and H(1s) + H(1s) to H( - )(1s(2)) + H(+).

This book was released on 2007-12-20 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Condensed-matter physics plays an ever increasing role in photonics, electronic and atomic collisions research. Dispersion (Dynamics and Relaxation) includes scattering/collisions in the gaseous phase. It also includes thermal agitation, tunneling and relaxation in the liquid and solid phases. Classical mechanics, classical statistical mechanics, classical relativity and quantum mechanics are all implicated. 'Semiclassical' essentially means that there is a large or asymptotic real parameter. 'Semiclassical' can also mean 'classical with first-order quantal correction', based on an exponentiated Liouville series commencing with a simple pole in the -plane, being Planck's reduced constant and coming with all the attendant connection problems associated with the singularity at the turning or transition point and with the Stokes phenomenon. Equally,' semiclassical' can mean 'electrons described quantally and the heavy particles classically'. This latter gives rise to the so-called impact parameter method based on a pre-assigned classical trajectory. With evermore sophisticated experiments, it has become equally more important to test theory over a wider range of parameters. For instance, at low impact energies in heavy-particle collisions, the inverse velocity is a large parameter; in single-domain ferromagnetism, thermal agitation (including Brownian motion and continuous-time random walks) is faced with a barrier of height 'sigma', a possibly large parameter. Methods of solution include phase-integral analysis, integral transforms and change-of-dependent variable. We shall consider the Schrödinger time-independent and time-dependent equations, the Dirac equation, the Fokker Planck equation, the Langevin equation and the equations of Einstein's classical general relativity equations. There is an increasing tendency among physicists to decry applied mathematics and theoretical physics in favour of computational blackboxes. One may say applied mathematics concerns hard sums and products (and their inverses) but unless one can simplify and sum infinite series of products of infinite series, can one believe the results of a computer program? The era of the polymath has passed; this book proposal aims to show the relevance to, and impact of theory on, laboratory scientists.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until recently, the field of atomic and molecular collisions was left to a handful of practitioners who essentially explored it as a branch of atomic physics and gathered their experimental re sults mainly from spectroscopy measurements in bulk. But in the past ten years or so, all of this has dramatically changed, and we are now witnessing the rapid growth of a large body of research that encompasses the simplest atoms as well as the largest mole cules, that looks at a wide variety of phenomena well outside purely spectroscopic observation, and that finds applications in an unexpectedly broad range of physico-chemical and physical pro cesses. The latter are in turn surprisingly close to very important sectors of applied research, such as the modeling of molecular lasers, the study of isotope separation techniques, and the energy losses in confined plasmas, to mention just a few of them. As a consequence of this healthy state of affairs, greatly diversified research pathways have developed; however, their specialized problems are increasingly at risk of being viewed in isolation, although they are part of a major and extended branch of physics or chemistry. This is particularly true when it comes to the theory of this work -- where well-established methods and models of one subfield are practically unknown to researchers in other subfields -- and, consequently, the danger of wasteful duplication arising is quite real.
