Book Oxford Handbook of Face Perception

Download or read book Oxford Handbook of Face Perception written by Andy Calder and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2011-07-28 with total page 944 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The human face is unique among social stimuli in conveying such a variety of different characteristics. A person's identity, sex, race, age, emotional state, focus of attention, facial speech patterns, and attractiveness are all detected and interpreted with relative ease from the face. Humans also display a surprising degree of consistency in the extent to which personality traits, such as trustworthiness and likeability, are attributed to faces. In the past thirty years, face perception has become an area of major interest within psychology, with a rapidly expanding research base. Yet until now, there has been no comprehensive reference work bringing together this ever growing body of research. The Oxford Handbook of Face Perception is the most comprehensive and commanding review of the field ever published. It looks at the functional and neural mechanisms underlying the perception, representation, and interpretation of facial characteristics, such as identity, expression, eye gaze, attractiveness, personality, and race. It examines the development of these processes, their neural correlates in both human and non-human primates, congenital and acquired disorders resulting from their breakdown, and the theoretical and computational frameworks for their underlying mechanisms. With chapters by an international team of leading authorities from the brain sciences, the book is a landmark publication on face perception. For anyone looking for the definitive text on this burgeoning field, this is the essential book.

Book In the Eye of the Beholder

Download or read book In the Eye of the Beholder written by Vicki Bruce and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Babies are born with an instant fascination with the human face, and this powerful natural attraction persists throughout our lives. In the Eye of the Beholder takes readers on an engaging tour of the science behind this all-too-human activity, revealing what happens inside our heads when we look at faces. What can neuroscience tell us about how the brain perceives faces? How do facial proportions change as we age? Can one judge personality simply by looking at a face? Why are some faces more attractive to us? Psychologists Vicki Bruce and Andy Young provide thought-provoking answers to these questions, using state-of-the-art science, amazing computer-manipulated graphics, and colorful paintings from the Scottish National Portrait Gallery. This lavishly illustrated volume--featuring over 200 pictures, including fifty in full color--takes us behind the scenes of something we do a hundred times a day, revealing how we look at, and judge, human faces.

Book Cognitive Representation of Facial Asymmetry

Download or read book Cognitive Representation of Facial Asymmetry written by David White and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The human face displays mild asymmetry, with measurements of facial structure differing from left to right of the meridian by an average of three percent. Presently this source of variation is of theoretical interest primarily to researchers studying the perception of beauty, but a very limited amount of research has addressed the question of how this variation contributes to the cognitive processes underlying face recognition. This is surprising given that measurement of facial asymmetry can reliably distinguish between even the most similar of faces. Furthermore, brain regions responsible for symmetry detection support face-processing regions, and detection of symmetry is superior in upright faces relative to inverted and contrast-reversed face stimuli. In addition, facial asymmetry provides a useful biometric for automatic face recognition systems, and understanding the contribution of facial asymmetry in human face recognition may therefore inform the development of these systems. In this thesis the extent to which facial asymmetry is implicated in the process of recognition in human participants is quantified. By measuring the effect of left-right reversal on various tasks of face processing, the degree to which facial asymmetry is represented by memory is investigated. Marginal sensitivity to mirror reversal is demonstrated in a number of instances, and it is therefore concluded that cognitive representations of faces specify structural asymmetry. Reversal effects are typically slight however and on a number of occasions no reliable effect of this stimulus manipulation is detected. It is likely that a general tendency to treat mirror reversals as equivalent stimuli, in addition to an inability to recall lateral orientation of objects from memory, somewhat obscure the effect of reversal. The findings are discussed in the context of existing literature examining the way in which faces are cognitively represented.

Book The Neuropsychology of Face Perception and Facial Expression

Download or read book The Neuropsychology of Face Perception and Facial Expression written by Raymond Bruyer and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2014-04-04 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first to offer an overview of the increasingly studied field of face perception. Experimental and pathological dissociation methods are used to understand both the precise cognitive mechanisms and the cerebral functions involved in face perception. Three main areas of investigation are discussed: face processing after brain damage; lateral differences for face processing in normals; neuropsychological studies on facial expressions.

Book excerpt: What makes a narcissist go from self-involved to terrifying? In this national bestseller, Joe Navarro, a leading FBI profiler, unlocks the secrets to the personality disorders that put us all at risk. “I should have known.” “How could we have missed the warning signs?” ”I always thought there was something off about him.” When we wake up to new tragedies in the news every day—shootings, rampages, acts of domestic terrorism—we often blame ourselves for missing the mania lurking inside unsuspecting individuals. But how could we have known that the charismatic leader had the characteristics of a tyrant? And how can ordinary people identify threats from those who are poised to devastate their lives on a daily basis—the crazy coworkers, out-of-control family members, or relentless neighbors? In Dangerous Personalities, former FBI profiler Joe Navarro has the answers. He shows us how to identify the four most common "dangerous personalities"—the Narcissist, the Predator, the Paranoid, and the Unstable Personality— and how to analyze the potential threat level. Along the way, he provides essential tips and tricks to protect ourselves both immediately and in the long-term, as well as how to heal the trauma of being exposed to the destructive egos in our world.

Book Hemispheric Asymmetry

    Book Details:
  • Author : Joseph B. Hellige
  • Publisher : Harvard University Press
  • Release : 2001
  • ISBN : 9780674005594
  • Pages : 418 pages

Download or read book Hemispheric Asymmetry written by Joseph B. Hellige and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is "right-brain" thought essentially creative, and "left-brain" strictly logical? Joseph B. Hellige argues that this view is far too simplistic. Surveying extensive data in the field of cognitive science, he disentangles scientific facts from popular assumptions about the brain's two hemispheres. In Hemispheric Asymmetry, Hellige explains that the "right brain" and "left brain" are actually components of a much larger cognitive system encompassing cortical and subcortical structures, all of which interact to produce unity of thought and action. He further explores questions of whether hemispheric asymmetry is unique to humans, and how it might have evolved. This book is a valuable overview of hemispheric asymmetry and its evolutionary precedents.
