Book Magnetic Interactions in Molecules and Solids

Download or read book Magnetic Interactions in Molecules and Solids written by Coen de Graaf and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-09-04 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook is the second volume in the Theoretical Chemistry and Computational Modeling series and aims to explain the theoretical basis of magnetic interactions at a level that will be useful for master students in physical, inorganic and organic chemistry. The book gives a treatment of magnetic interactions in terms of the phenomenological spin Hamiltonians that have been such powerful tools for chemistry and physics in the past half century, starting from the simple Heisenberg and Ising Hamiltonians and ending with Hamiltonians that include biquadratic, cyclic or anisotropic exchange. On the other hand, it also explains how quantum chemical methods, reaching from simple mean field methods to accurate models that include the effects of electron correlation and spin-orbit coupling, can help to understand the magnetic properties. Connecting the two perspectives is an essential aspect of the book, since it leads to a deeper understanding of the relation between physical phenomena and basic properties. It also makes clear that in many cases one can derive magnetic coupling parameters not only from experiment, but also from accurate ab initio calculations. The book starts with introducing a selection of basic concepts and tools. Throughout the book the text is interlarded with exercises, stimulating the students to not only read but also verify the assertions and perform (parts of) the derivations by themselves. In addition, each chapter ends with a number of problems that can be used to check whether the material has been understood.

Book Spectroscopic and Mechanistic Studies of Dinuclear Metallohydrolases and Their Biomimetic Complexes

Download or read book Spectroscopic and Mechanistic Studies of Dinuclear Metallohydrolases and Their Biomimetic Complexes written by Lena Josefine Daumann and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-05-28 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lena Daumanns's thesis describes structural and functional studies of the enzyme Glycerophosphodiesterase (GpdQ) from Enterobacter aerogenes. It also examines the properties of small mimics of this enzyme and related binuclear metallohydrolases such as the metallo-ß-lactamases to enhance our understanding of hydrolytic cleavage of important substrates like phosphoesters and β-lactams. Overall, this project has led to a better understanding of the metal ion binding and active site structural features of the enzyme GpdQ. Daumann describes how she successfully immobilized phosphoesterase and related biomimetics on solid supports for potential applications in the area of bioremediation of organophosphate pesticides. Analysis shows that both the enzyme and biomimetics can be stored on the solid support without loss of activity. Furthermore, the author specroscopically and mechanistically characterized a number of Zn(II), Cd(II) and Co(II) complexes, some of which are among the most active biomimetics towards organophosphates reported to date. This thesis makes excellent reading for non-specialists because each chapter includes a short introduction section.

Book Supramolecular Chemistry in the 3rd Millennium

Download or read book Supramolecular Chemistry in the 3rd Millennium written by Catherine E. Housecroft and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2021-08-18 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Special Issue is one of the first for the new MDPI flagship journal Chemistry (ISSN 2624-8549) which has a broad remit for publishing original research in all areas of chemistry. The theme of this issue is Supramolecular Chemistry in the 3rd Millennium and I am sure that this topic will attract many exciting contributions. We chose this topic because it encompasses the unity of contemporary pluridisciplinary science, in which organic, inorganic, physical and theoretical chemists work together with molecular biologists and physicists to develop a systems-level understanding of molecular interactions. The description of supramolecular chemistry as 'chemistry beyond the molecule' (Jean-Marie Lehn, Nobel Lecture and Gautam R. Desiraju, Nature, 2001, 412, 397) addresses the wide variety of weak, non-covalent interactions that are the basis for the assembly of supramolecular architectures, molecular receptors and molecular recognition, programed molecular systems, dynamic combinatorial libraries, coordination networks and functional supramolecular materials. We welcome submissions from all disciplines involved in this exciting and evolving area of science.

Book Structural Dynamics of a Photoexcited Dicopper I Complex Probed with Ultrafast X ray and Optical Techniques

Download or read book Structural Dynamics of a Photoexcited Dicopper I Complex Probed with Ultrafast X ray and Optical Techniques written by Maria Naumova and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thesis a combination of ultrafast X-ray and optical techniques supported by DFT calculations was applied to study the structural dynamics in a photoexcited binuclear copper complex. This complex has tetramethylguanidine and bridging disulfide ligands and stems from biomimetic research of active sites of copper enzymes involved in electron transfer. In this compound biologically relevant disulfide-thiolate conversion can be achieved both chemically by addition of chloride ions and, as we show in this work, via photoexcitation of a metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) band. The ultrafast evolution of the photoexcited system was studied with femtosecond optical transient spectroscopy in UV/vis, which revealed three distinct timescales constants of 650 fs, 10 ps and >100 ps assigned as internal conversion to the ground state, intersystem crossing and relaxation of the triplet state to the ground state, respectively. The structure and lifetime of the triplet state was studied with pump-probe X-ray techniques: X-ray absorption spectroscopy revealed changes in the local structure around the copper atoms with 0.01 Å precision, whereas wide-angle X-ray scattering was sensitive to the changes in the global shape of the molecule arising due to rotation of two halves of the molecule relative to each other upon the disulfide bond cleavage. These results are among the first to shed light on electronic and structural dynamics of photoexcited sulfur-coordinated copper complexes and demonstrate the potential of combining pump-probe X-ray absorption and scattering for studies of photoinduced structural dynamics in molecules. Good air and radiation stability make the investigated system a suitable model to study photoinduced disulfide bond cleavage and recombination. ; eng
