Book Chinese Mathematical Astrology

Download or read book Chinese Mathematical Astrology written by Ho Peng Yoke and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2004-03-01 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though there are a number of well-written works on Chinese divination, there are none that deal with the three sophisticated devices that were employed by the Chinese Astronomical Bureau in the eleventh century and for hundreds of years thereafter. Chinese experts applied the methods associated with these devices to both weather forecasting and to the interpretation of human affairs. Hidden by a veil of secrecy, these methods have always been relatively little known other than by their names. The first work in any language to explore these three methods, known as sanshi (three cosmic boards), this book sheds light on a topic which has been shrouded in mystery for centuries, having been kept secret for many years by the Chinese Astronomical Bureau.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ZODIAC "It is a broad band or belt in the heavens extending 9 degrees on either side of the ecliptic, and known to the Hindus as Bhachakra or the Circle of Light. It is a circle and as such it knows no beginning or end. In order to measure the distance, an arbitrary point is established, which is called the first point of Aries. The zodiac revolves once in a day on its axis, from east to west." --Dr. B.V. Raman, A Manual of Hindu Astrology So the Zodiac is an imaginary road in the sky, stretching about 8o north and 9o south of the apparent path of the Sun in the sky, within which the planets move around the Earth, once in a day, from east to west. The zodiac is divided into twelve equal parts called Signs ( Rasis ) (30o x 12 = 360o.). These twelve divisions are called Aries (Mesha), Taurus (Vrisha) etc. Signs of the Zodiac 1. 0o - 30o Aries Mesha Medam 2. 30 - 60 Taurus Vrishabha Edavam 3. 60 - 90 Gemini Mithuna Mithunam 4. 90 - 120 Cancer Kataka Karkatakam 5. 120 - 150 Leo Simha Chingam 6 150 - 180 Virgo Kanya Kanni 7. 180 - 210 Libra Thula Thulam 8. 210 - 240 Scorpio Vrischika Vrischikam 9. 240- 270 Sagittarius Dhanus Dhanu 10. 270 - 300 Capricorn Makara Makaram 11. 300 - 330 Aquarius Kumbha Kumbham 12. 330 - 360 Pisces Meena Meenam There are two zodiacs: one moving (Tropical) and the other fixed (Sidereal). . In the case of the Tropical Zodiac, each of these signs formerly occupied the similarly named constellations (groups of stars), but now, by precession of the equinoxes, they coincide with the constellations that bears the names of the preceding signs, that is, the constellation Pisces is now in Aries Sign. The zodiac ( rasi chakra ) which reckons the Aries 0o (imaginary starting point of the zodiac) from the equinoctial point and which has precession, is the 'movable', 'tropical' or 'sayana' zodiac. Modern astronomy follows this zodiac. But the zodiac considered in India for astrological purposes is a fixed one. In this case, the first point or 0o is based on a fixed star. In the Chitra paksha ayanamsa, it is a point between Revati and Aswini nakshatras, ie., 180o from Chitra nakshatra. So the zodiac considered in India for astological purposes is 'fixed', 'sidereal' or 'nirayana'. This book contains: 1) Introduction (General information about Indian astrology). 2) Astronomy relevant to Astrology 3) Mathematical Astrology 4) Predictive Astrology, prepared with reference to the original classical texts, Brihat Jataka, Phaladeepika and Brihat Parasara Hora Sastra.

Book Ancient Astronomy and Celestial Divination

Download or read book Ancient Astronomy and Celestial Divination written by Noel M. Swerdlow and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents recent work on Babylonian celestialdivination and on the Greek inheritors of the Babyloniantradition. In the ancient world, the collection and study of celestial phenomena and the intepretation of their prophetic significance, especially as applied to kings and nations, were closely related sciences carried out by the same scholars. Both ancient sources and modern research agree that astronomy and celestial divination arose in Babylon. Only in the late nineteenth century, however, did scholars begin to identify and decipher the original Babylonian sources, and the process of understanding those sources has been long and difficult. This volume presents recent work on Babylonian celestial divination and on the Greek inheritors of the Babylonian tradition. Both philological and mathematical work are included. The essays shed new light on all of the known textual sources, including the omen series Enuma Anu Enlil, which contains omens from as far back as the early second or even third millennium, and the earliest personal horoscopes, from about 400 B.C., as well as the Astronomical Diaries, ephemerides, and other observational and mathematical texts. One essay concerns astronomical papyri that confirm the extensive transmission of Babylonian methods into Greek; a study of Ptolemy's lunar theory suggests that Ptolemy relied more on his own observations than previously thought; and an analysis of Theon's commentary on Ptolemy's Handy Tables shows that Theon explicated their meaning both conscientiously and competently.ContributorsAsger Aaboe, Alan C. Book Astronomy and History Selected Essays

Download or read book Astronomy and History Selected Essays written by O. Neugebauer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The collection of papers assembled here on a variety of topics in ancient and medieval astronomy was originally suggested by Noel Swerdlow of the University of Chicago. He was also instrumental in making a selection* which would, in general, be on the same level as my book The Exact Sciences in Antiquity. It may also provide a general background for my more technical History of Ancient Mathematical Astronomy and for my edition of Astronomi cal Cuneiform Texts. Several of these republished articles were written because I wanted to put to rest well-entrenched historical myths which could not withstand close scrutiny of the sources. Examples are the supposed astronomical origin of the Egyptian calendar (see [9]), the discovery of precession by the Babylonians [16], and the "simplification" of the Ptolemaic system in Copernicus' De Revolutionibus [40]. In all of my work I have striven to present as accurately as I could what the original sources reveal (which is often very different from the received view). Thus, in [32] discussion of the technical terminology illuminates the meaning of an ancient passage which has been frequently misused to support modern theories about ancient heliocentrism; in [33] an almost isolated instance reveals how Greek world-maps really looked; and in [43] the Alexandrian Easter computus, held in awe by many historians, is shown from Ethiopic sources to be based on very simple procedures.

Book Mesopotamian Planetary Astronomy astrology

Download or read book Mesopotamian Planetary Astronomy astrology written by David Brown and published by Brill. This book was released on 2000 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pliny wrote of Babylon that "here the creator of the science of astronomy was". Excavations have shown this statement to be true. This book argues that the earliest attempts at the accurate prediction of celestial phenomena are indeed to be found in clay tablets dating to the 8th and 7th centuries BC from both Babylon and from Nineveh. The author carefully situates this astronomy within its cultural context, treating all available material from the relevant period, and also analysing the earlier astrological material and the later well-known ephemerides and related texts. A wholly new approach to cuneiform astral concerns emerges - one in which both celestial divination and the later astronomy are shown to be embedded in a prevailing philosophy dealing with the ideal nature of the early universe, and in which the dynamics of the celestial divination industry that surrounded the last Assyrian monarchs account for no less than the first recorded "scientific revolution". This work closely adheres to the original textual sources, and argues for the evolution on the basis of the needs of the ancient scholars and the internal logic of the divinatory and predictive systems employed. To this end, it offers, for the first time, a Mesopotamian contribution to the philosophy, and not only the history, of science.
