Dragon's can't feel. Dragons can only rust.' In a fantastic and frightening future world, a dragon of any kind would naturally feel more than a little out of place. Unsure if his existence is a blessing or a curse, Gonard flees the safety of the only home he's ever known to go on a search for a soul he isn't really sure he has. He is accompanied on his quest by an android-like medtech--with a hidden and perhaps deadly agenda--and the Outler, a young woman from a mining asteroid who will use any means at her disposal to be allowed to remain on Earth. Book Reinvention Of Science The Slaying The Dragons Of Dogma And Ignorance

Download or read book Reinvention Of Science The Slaying The Dragons Of Dogma And Ignorance written by Bernard J T Jones and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2023-11-02 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the history of science, different thinkers, philosophers and scientists postulated the existence of entities that, in spite of their not being visible or detectable in their time, or perhaps ever, were nevertheless useful to explain the real world. We started this book by looking at a handful of these entities. These included phlogiston to account for fire; the luminiferous ether for propagation of radiation; the homunculus to provide for heredity; and crystalline spheres to carry the wandering planets around the earth. Many of these erroneous beliefs had held up progress, just as dragons drawn on the edges of a map discouraged exploration. This pattern of science evolution continued through the centuries up to the present day.The book evolved into a more extensive history of how science evolved through controversy, suppression, and the desire to maintain the status quo. Our story passes from the Babylonians and Greeks through the middle ages, the renaissance and the scientific revolution to almost current events. We discuss the evolution of our world, the controversy about the extinction of dinosaurs, and open questions in contemporary science such as dark matter, black holes and the origin of the Universe, including how we understand the subatomic world of elementary particles. Most of the chapters deal with astronomy, cosmology and physics, but there are brief ventures into geosciences (continental drift), biosciences (the homunculus), atmospheric physics (Heaviside layer), paleontology (the extinction of dinosaurs), and computer science (artificial intelligence). The authors present a sequence of how mistakes and fallacies have been purged from our quest to understand nature. The way these changes have come about are skillfully set in their relevant historical contexts.

Book excerpt: One thousand years ago, the Alpha Quadrant was in turmoil as a great civil war raged between planets. To put an end to the senseless fighting, King Acco, from the planet Delphinus, used superior technology to build an enormous fighting robot called DrakNos. After many fierce battles, DrakNos put an end to the war and the opponents, the Drakkaunes, were banished into the Great Void as punishment for their war crimes. With the war over, DrakNos was no longer needed. As years of peace followed, the robot became nothing more than a legend, until the Drakkaunes rebuilt their civilizations and started a new campaign to reclaim the Alpha Quadrant. With their fleet now ready to attack, DrakNos the legend has returned. Inspired by Star Trek and other sci-fi series and movies, Daniel J. Willyard created his robotic hero DrakNos, who will also be featured in the author's next book. Willyard is currently converting this story into a screenplay. He is an aircrew survival equipment man in the Navy, caring for aircrew flight gear. Willyard grew up in Paradise, California, and now resides in Oak Harbor, Washington.

Book Discovery of the First Asteroid Ceres

Download or read book Discovery of the First Asteroid Ceres written by Clifford Cunningham and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-10-13 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on extensive primary sources, many never previously translated into English, this is the definitive account of the origins of Ceres as it went from being classified as a new planet to reclassification as the first of a previously unknown group of celestial objects. Cunningham opens this critical moment of astronomical discovery to full modern analysis for the first time. This book includes all the voluminous correspondence, translated into English, between the astronomers of Europe about the startling discovery of Ceres by Piazzi in 1801. It covers the period up to March 1802, at which time Pallas was discovered. Also included are Piazzi’s two monographs about Ceres, and the sections of two books dealing with Ceres, one by Johann Bode, the other by Johann Schroeter. The origin of the word ‘asteroid’ is explained, along with several chapters on the antecedents of the story going back to ancient Greek times. The formulation of Bode’s Law is given, as are the details on the efforts of Baron von Zach to organize a search for the supposed missing planet between Mars and Jupiter. Examples of verse created to commemorate the great discovery are included in this first volume. The author, who has a PhD in the History of Astronomy, is a dedicated scholar of the story of asteroids and his research on the discovery of Ceres is comprehensive and fully sourced. The discovery came at a time when rival astronomers were in hot competition with each other, and when the true nature of these celestial bodies was not yet known. With astronomers in France, Italy and beyond vying to understand and receive credit for the new class of astral bodies, drama was not in short supply--nor were scientific advances.
