Download or read book Pan Caribbean Integration written by Patsy Lewis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-12-14 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A critical part of the history of regionalism in Latin America and the Caribbean is to be found in the widening of the economic and functional relationships among the English-speaking Caribbean to embrace other countries in the Greater Caribbean. Bringing together a range of international experts to explain the broad thrusts of CARICOM’s widening project and the opportunities and challenges it presents, the book pays particular attention to CARICOM’s relations with the French Caribbean territories. Providing a review of the pan-Caribbean landscape this volume notes the impact of these new relationships on internal CARICOM affairs; inter-regional/South-South cooperation; and political and legislative changes in European metropoles of the non-independent territories. It also contemplates recent developments in the region and globally, such as political instability in Brazil and Venezuela, Britain’s decision to leave the European Union and the policies of the Donald Trump administration. This edited collection will be an important resource for students and researchers in Latin American and Caribbean politics, economics, development, history and heritage.
Download or read book Cooperation in the Greater Caribbean written by Norman Girvan and published by Ian Randle Publishers. This book was released on 2006 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Over the past 50 years there has been a subtle shift in the proclaimed identity of the Caribbean. The development of a pan-Caribbean consciousness transcending language and colonial ties has become even more pronounced in the post-independence era. The famed 1992 report of the West India Commission, A Time for Action, widely regarded as the turning point in contemporary Caribbean development, recommended a deepening of CARICOM and a simultaneous widening of functional cooperation. The result was the creation of the Association of Caribbean States (ACS) with potential membership of all the countries of the Caribbean Basin. In this volume, Norman Girvan examines the issues and obstacles, challenges and opportunities presented by this functional cooperation and presented the ACS as a viable vehicle to help CARICOM nations meet the challenges of the new globalized environment. Book excerpt: ‘Transnational Crimes in the Americas’ addresses contemporary issues with respect to public institutions that are stakeholders in the fight against globalization of crime. Regional public organizations, with a primary focus on the Americas, constitute a framework for understanding the need for an institutional response within the Western Hemisphere. While other authors have addressed the growth of organized crime, no one has explained institutional developments in the struggle against transnational crimes. 'Transnational Crimes in the Americas’ highlights existing organizations, emphasizing a regional response to transnational crimes, suggestions for a permanent criminal court in the Americas and an appraisal of the current state of institutional developments in the region.
Download or read book Caribbean Integration Law written by David S. Berry and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2014-02-27 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Caribbean Integration Law offers a comprehensive legal analysis of the current treaties and rules governing the two main regional organisations in the Caribbean, the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS). Both organisations are operating under new treaties, the Revised Treaty of Chaguaramas and the Revised Treaty of Basseterre, respectively, which created the CARICOM Single Market and Economy, and the OECS Economic Union. The single market and economic union were built upon principles of free movement of goods, labour, and capital, and a common external tariff. This book reviews the foundations of Caribbean regional integration, the institutional frameworks of the two regional organisations, and fleshes out the scope and context of the legal systems created by the treaties. It also reviews the dispute settlement mechanisms under both treaties, including the increasingly active role of the Caribbean Court of Justice, which allows persons to enforce their treaty rights directly before the Court. The book offers selective comparisons to the current rules governing the European Union, and integrates crucial insights from the field of public international law, including the law of treaties and international institutional law.

Download or read book Shaping the Culture of Peace in a Multilateral World written by Patrick U. Petit and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on 2011-12-31 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the world faces a multitude of complexly-interwoven challenges, new values and new worldviews are emerging to change the ways in which human beings relate to each other, to our planet, and to all life on Earth. In today’s globalized world, humanity is becoming inescapably aware that coexistence, cooperation, and respect for diversity are fundamental values by which all of us must live. These essential human values, which apply in all individual and societal relationships, are likewise intrinsic to a culture of peace: a way of living that will allow a harmonious, multifaceted, global civilization to blossom. Central to this volume is a belief that in an interdependent world, collective decision-making for the collective good is the most effective way to move forward. In order to respect the balance among cultures and nations, decisions that have a global impact must be taken multilaterally. No culture can achieve and maintain its international objectives by acting unilaterally; nor can any nation or cultural group claim to represent the whole of humanity. Shaping the Culture of Peace in a Multilateral World compiles prominent visionary articles from United Nations institutions and regional and other intergovernmental organizations, and highlights the contributions being made to the creation of a culture of peace. It aims to strengthen multilateral cooperation among intergovernmental organizations worldwide, and to facilitate the formation of a global network of multilateral mechanisms, which will provide collective and holistic responses to the peace and security challenges of the 21st century. Shaping the Culture of Peace in a Multilateral World is in itself a true example of multilateralism, and a publication treasure for people, who are active or interested in international diplomacy and international affairs.
