Book excerpt: The effectiveness of the associated production, the (.pi., K) technique, for obtaining hypernuclear spectra across the whole periodic table is demonstrated. Binding energy spectra for hypernuclei of beryllium-9, carbon-12, carbon-13, oxygen-16, silicon-28, calcium-40, vanadium-51, and yttrium-89 were measured. The Low-Energy-Separated Beam I at the Brookhaven National Laboratory AGS was used with the Moby Dick spectrometer. A rate of 2 million pions per beam spill was used for targets of beryllium-9, carbon-12, water, silicon, and calcium. A rate of 10 million pions per beam spill was used for carbon-13, vanadium-51, calcium, and yttrium-89. The higher beam rates were necessary for the low cross sections for the ground states of heavier targets. All of the spectra for hypernuclei above the p-shell show the presence of a continuum apparently underlying the peaks of the bound state region. 4 refs., 5 figs., 1 tab.

Book excerpt: The Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) has been successfully carrying out hadronic physics studies since 1996 at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab) in Virginia, USA. The characteristics of this electron beam, together with those of the experimental equipment, offer a unique opportunity to study the electro-production of hypernuclei through the reaction A(e, e[prime]K[sup +])B[sub [Lambda]], where the hypernuclear production is tagged by the detection of the scattered electron in coincidence with the produced kaon. The kaon is a part of the associated strangeness pair production with a [Lambda] hyperon remaining embedded in the nuclear medium to form the hypernucleus. The hypernuclear physics program will cover an important part of the JLab experimental program over the next few years. This short review will focus mainly on a few subjects, and some experimental details of the Hall A experiment, where the authors have primarily responsibilities, will be presented.

Book excerpt: Hypernuclei have been studied for the last 35 years using several techniques. Since 1970, the {sup A}Z (K−, [pi]−) {sub {Lambda}}{sup A}Z strangeness-exchange reaction has been used at CERN, BNL, and KEK to produce hypernuclei and study their spectroscopic properties. These studies also include experiments where decay gamma rays and hypernuclear weak decay products are detected in coincidence with hypernuclear production. Recent experiments at BNL and KEK have proven the utility of the {sup A}Z ([pi], K) {sub {Lambda}}{sup A}Z reaction to study hypernuclear spectroscopy. Although I have no hope of covering this field in much detail, I write this paper as an introduction to the subject and highlights some of the recent experimental developments. 37 refs., 6 figs., 2 tabs.
