Book excerpt: The construction of dams has had a greater impact on riverine fisheries worldwide than any other human activity. The Choctawhatchee, Pea and Yellow Rivers Watershed Management Authority has began the permitting processes for placing a reservoir dam on the Little Choctawhatchee River, a tributary to the Choctawhatchee River. The stated function of the proposed function of the proposed reservoir is for water supply, but development is a controversial yet officially unstated issue. This study collected data seasonally from twelve sites in the Little Choctawhatchee River watershed on water quality (four times), fish and crayfish (six times), and mussels (once) from December 2006 to June 2008 in order to determine pre-dam conditions, species composition, and to compare these data to historical data. Results suggest that mussel assemblages have declined dramatically in diversity.
