An index of instruments according to purpose, language, and grade level is included. Descriptions of assessment instruments and activities and sample assessments were collected from teachers, schools, school districts, state education offices, and educational research organizations. In each section, materials are listed in alphabetical order according to language. The major emphasis is on French, German, Italian, Japanese, and Spanish. Also included are Arabic, Catalan, Chinese, Chuukese (Lagoon), Gallego, Haitian-Creole, Indonesian, Korean, Latin, Modern Greek, Navajo, Palauan, Pohnpeian, Portuguese, Russian, Tagalog, and Welsh. Each entry includes information on availability, current users, language program type, intended grade level, intended test use, skills tested, test author, publications date, test cost, length, test materials, format, scoring method, a description, test development and technical information, parallel versions in other languages, and a contact person. Therefore, general questions such as what are the possible challenges in language acquisition or such as how well the/my child is doing, are commonly present for researchers, clinicians, teachers, and parents. Parent-child interaction offers a privileged setting to observe children’s behavior in multiple communicative situations, which often is only available to the parents/caregivers. For this reason, within the broad range of methods used to assess children’s development, parental questionnaires are widely used being a non-invasive and inexpensive instrument to obtain information which is otherwise difficult to obtain. Data obtained with the many questionnaires covering various aspects of child development and communicative competence are equally relevant for basic research and everyday clinical practice. Development and use of parental questionnaires as well as data interpretation frequently require an interdisciplinary and cross-sector approach, bringing together developmental psychologists and practitioners. This interdisciplinarity is assumed but rarely addressed directly.

Whilst reading comprehension has been thoroughly investigated in the last decade, there is surprisingly little research on children’s comprehension of picture stories, particularly for bilinguals. This can be partially explained by the lack of cross-culturally robust, cross-linguistic instruments targeting early narration. This book presents an inference-based model of narrative comprehension and a tool that grew out of a large-scale European project on multilingualism. Covering a range of language settings, the book uses the Multilingual Assessment Instrument for Narratives to answer the question which narrative comprehension skills (bilingual) children can be expected to master at a certain age, and explores how such comprehension is affected (or not affected) by linguistic and extra-linguistic factors. Linking theory to method, the book will appeal to researchers in linguistics and psychology and graduate students interested in narrative, multilingualism, and language acquisition.
