Book excerpt: The landing craft assault or LCA was one of the unsung heroes of the Second World War. It took part in practically every amphibious operation from Norway to Normandy and landed around 400,000 men in action conditions, plus many more in training. It was the only serviceable British landing craft at the beginning of the War, and it remained in service until the Suez operation of 1956. It landed the first waves of infantry on the British and Canadian beaches in Normandy in 1944, and Americans on the notorious Omaha Beach. Its far-sighted design of 1938 remains the basis for the landing craft of today. This is the first book devoted to this humble but essential craft. It examines its design history before the War, when amphibious operations were deeply unfashionable. It describes its design and construction with plans that will be useful to modellers and wargamers. It includes information on the role of the crew and the techniques and tactics used in landings. It gives an account of the larger ships which carried it and the life of the sailors and soldiers who travelled in it, with many vivid personal accounts. Finally, it describes its role in the many operations in which it took part, including withdrawals such as Dunkirk and the catastrophic Dieppe raid of 1942.

Download or read book Landing Craft Infantry and Fire Support written by Gordon L. Rottman and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2011-12-20 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Described by one soldier as “a metal box designed by a sadist to move soldiers across the water,” the Landing Craft, Infantry was a large beaching craft intended to deliver an infantry company to a hostile shore, once the beachhead was secured. The LCI and its vehicle-delivery counterpart, the Landing Ship, Medium were widely used by the allies during World War II. Later, the hulls of these ships were used as the basis for a fire support ship. While the landing ships were phased out after the Korean War, some fire support craft remained in use throughout the Vietnam War. This book tells the developmental and operational history of this important tool of American amphibious military strategy that spanned three wars.

Book British Amphibious Assault Ships

Download or read book British Amphibious Assault Ships written by Edward Hampshire and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-12-26 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amphibious assault ships have been at the centre of nearly all of Britain's expeditionary campaigns since World War II, from the Suez crisis of 1956 to operations as far afield as Borneo (1963–66), the Falklands (1982), Sierra Leone (2000) and Iraq (2003). In major operations such as Suez and the Falklands, the use of amphibious assault ships was essential to the military success of the campaigns. The Suez Crisis saw two of the Royal Navy's former light fleet carriers converted into 'commando carriers' to specialise in amphibious warfare. In the 1960s these were followed by the famous Fearless class ships – the first purpose-built amphibious assault ships in the Royal Navy. With an internal dock, headquarters capability, and multiple landing craft, these 'Landing Platform Docks' were built to project power around the world. When the Falklands were invaded, HMS Fearless was the key to the successful landing in San Carlos. In the 1990s, a new generation was ordered: the helicopter carrier HMS Ocean and the Albion class LPDs. In recent years Ocean, Albion and Bulwark have been the largest fighting ships of the Royal Navy and have acted as the navy's flagships, as well as being perhaps the most versatile ships in the navy. This title is an essential guide to British Amphibious Assault Ships across the decades, from the mighty Fearless to the modern Albion. Packed with full-colour illustrations, contemporary photography, and detailed analysis, this definitive work explores the history, development, and deployment of the Royal Navy's front line.

Book Amphibious Assault Landing Craft Program Large Pallet Development

Download or read book Amphibious Assault Landing Craft Program Large Pallet Development written by Joseph A. Drelicharz and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To complement the high speed of the advanced craft being developed by the Amphibious Assault Landing Craft Program, a need exists to consolidate cargo into larger unit loads in order to improve the material handling rates at the terminals of the ship-to-shore cycle. This report documents the design, fabrication, test, and evaluation of four prototype large pallets, 8 x 9 feet in area, each capable of carrying four standard 40 x 48-inch pallets. The prototype pallets include a wooden, a folded-plate, an aluminum, and a strongback design. Each pallet functioned well with respect to its specific design criteria; however, no one pallet was clearly superior to the other three alternatives, and none fulfilled all the design criteria. Book D Day Landing Craft

Download or read book D Day Landing Craft written by Andrew Whitmarsh and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2024-05-23 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contribution of landing craft and their crews to the 1944 Normandy campaign was enormous, and often overlooked. Most of the more than 132,000 Allied troops who landed on the beaches on D-Day came ashore from landing craft. The book examines why so many different types of landing craft were used in the operation; how they were built in both the UK and North America, over several years and with many competing war production requirements and operational needs. In the lead up to D-Day the Allies never seemed to have enough landing craft, their availability and production regularly discussed by top Allied leaders. This account is essential to anyone who wants to fully understand the course of D-Day, and the nature of Allied preparations for the campaign.
