Book The Frontier of National Sovereignty

Download or read book The Frontier of National Sovereignty written by AlanS. Milward and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many theoretical explanations had been offered for the rise of the European Community, but none had used historical analysis to draw out the deeper significance of the events that surrounded Maastricht. However, in this book, first published in 1993, the authors explored the process of European integration, and its future, drawing on extensive empirical research into the national archives of the member states. The authors brought their findings together in this consistently argued book to provide a new and coherent theory of European integration, which threw a fresh light on unexplored aspects of EC policy. The debate over the Treaty of Maastricht shows how ill-understood are the issues involved, and this book is intended to improve that understanding. It is essential reading to students of history, international relations and political science.

Book The Jews in Fascist Italy A History

Download or read book The Jews in Fascist Italy A History written by Renzo De Felice and published by Enigma Books. This book was released on 2015-11-23 with total page 659 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My aim was to explain in detail the facts surrounding Fascist anti-Semitism and the persecution of the Jews in Mussolini's Italy. Too many people in Italy and elsewhere underestimate or deny the tragic fate of European Jewry and anti-Semitism between the two world wars. A few short years ago anti-Semitism appeared defeated and reduced to a tiny group of fanatics. But now it seems to be regaining ground in its more political incarnation, probably the most dangerous one, because next to the religious, social and economic varieties it is the most insidious of all. The author occupies a central position among Italian historians specialized in modern Italy's political history. He broke new ground by first publishing this book in 1961 having obtained special permission to consult the files in the Archives of the Italian Jewish Communities concerning the Fascist regime's persecution of the Jews in Italy from 1938 to 1945. The book's release coincided with the trial of Adolf Eichmann in Jerusalem that brought the Holocaust to the attention of other historians and to the world public. The English translation of the final 1993 edition was supported by a grant from the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This paperback and electronic book edition is published in association with the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.

Book Towards and Beyond the Italian Republic

Download or read book Towards and Beyond the Italian Republic written by Davide Cadeddu and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-07-12 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the historical process that led to the foundation of the Italian Republic and its constitution, viewed through the personal experiences and political reflections of Adriano Olivetti (between 1919 and 1960), general manager and president of the well-known typewriter manufacturer “Ing. C. Olivetti & C.” An unbroken line of reasoning linked his maturing political reflections during the two post-war periods. The historical context of the 1950s did not prove to be very propitious, but the guidelines dispersed throughout the Italian cultural and political world from the movement that Olivetti founded were certainly seminal – generating a legacy of ideas that has only in part been recognized. What makes this study distinctive is the original approach to reading the history of Italy through Adriano Olivetti’s eyes and thoughts, far from the more common Christian Democratic or Communist perspective of those years. It is simply another view of what the Italian Republic could be and was not.

Book Adaptation of Immigrants

Book excerpt: This volume surveys studies conducted in the major immigrant receiving nations over the past several decades to ascertain the main established correlates of immigrant adjustment. It also reports findings from an original longitudinal study of immigrants to Australia from several European countries. Among the questions addressed are: What is the usual course of immigrants' reactions to their new country? How do these reactions differ depending on their focus of concern - self, family, friends, job, etc ? Are subjective reactions (satisfaction with various aspects of their lives) parallelled by objective measures of role performance ( adequacy of adaptation in the eyes of other people)? How are these reactions associated with other characteristics of the immigrants - personality, family relations, demographic and background characteristics?

Book Multilingualism Im mobilities and Spaces of Belonging

Download or read book Multilingualism Im mobilities and Spaces of Belonging written by Kristine Horner and published by Multilingual Matters. This book was released on 2019-10-11 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Certain forms of mobility and multilingualism tend to be portrayed as problematic in the public sphere, while others are considered to be unremarkable. Divided into three thematic sections, this book explores the contestation of spaces and the notion of borders, examines the ways in which heritage and authenticity are linked or challenged, and interrogates the intersections between mobility and hierarchies and the ways that language can be linked to notions of belonging and aspirations for mobility. Based on fieldwork in Africa, Asia, Australasia and Europe, it explores how language functions as both site of struggle and as a means of overcoming struggle. This volume will be of particular interest to scholars taking ethnographic and critical sociolinguistic approaches to the study of language and belonging in the context of globalisation.

Book Risorgimento in Exile

    Book Details:
  • Author : Maurizio Isabella
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press on Demand
  • Release : 2009-08-27
  • ISBN : 0199570671
  • Pages : 297 pages

Download or read book Risorgimento in Exile written by Maurizio Isabella and published by Oxford University Press on Demand. This book was released on 2009-08-27 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exile represented a fundamental experience in shaping Italian national identity. This book investigates the contribution of the Italian exile community in Europe and Latin America in the post Napoleonic era to imagining a new Italian political and economic community. By looking at the writings of such exiles, the book challenges recent historiography regarding the lack of genuine liberal culture in the Risorgimento. It argues that these émigrés' involvement in debates with British, continental, and American intellectuals, points to the emergence of liberalism and Romanticism as international ideologies shared by a community of patriots from Southern Europe as well as Latin America, and demonstrates that the Risorgimento first developed as a variation upon such global trends.
