Book excerpt: On the slopes of Colorado, an actress is caught in a passionate love triangle in this electrifying novel by a New York Times–bestselling author. Six weeks ago, Kit Masters was a nobody—a farm girl from Aspen, Colorado, who came to Hollywood hoping to make it as a movie star. Incredibly, her dream came true, and she was cast opposite John Travis, the biggest name on the silver screen. Now, she’s flying back to her home state on a private jet to begin shooting the film that will make her famous. She should be overjoyed, but when the trip home means a reunion with her old flame, rugged rancher Tom Bannon, Kit finds herself caught between Hollywood glamour and the passion of her Rocky Mountain heart. America’s first lady of romance, Janet Dailey shows that love burns hottest when the air is cold, demonstrating the storytelling talent that made her a multimillion-selling phenomenon.

Jermanah, acolyte of the religious Compound, has never been given the opportunity to make her own choices. Although she accepts her way of life and yearns to rise higher in the order, she learns ancient, forbidden healing from the Seer. On the night of the Double Moons, a child is born and given into Jermanah’s care until the boy is taken to the king. Kierigh was born moments before the rising of the Double Moons, but his twin brother wasn’t so lucky. Rumors flow from the Stronghold—following an ancient prophecy, the king sacrifices the baby boys to increase his power. But Kierigh senses that even after five cycles, his brother still lives. When Kierigh’s rebels attack the procession, he takes the babe, and Jermanah, to his hidden camp. The captivating acolyte disrupts Kierigh’s ordered and simple life. He opposes her religion and all the Compound claims to stand for. She’s everything he doesn’t need in his life. Yet she is everything he desires. No longer considering herself one of the Compound, Jermanah discovers freedom, and truths she finds difficult to believe. But when the babe is taken from the forest, she will do anything to save the child, including face the leader of the Compound—and the king. Can a rebel and an acolyte set aside pride and differences to find a lost brother, defeat evil, and discover their prophecy fulfilling destinies?

She needs to call upon her meager survival skills, figure out where in the many worlds she is—and find her way home. Born with no magic, Taj’s sorcerer father, Ib, deemed him unworthy, but allowed him to live. Taj accepts his life and strives to protect those forced to serve the sorcerer’s pleasures. The winged woman is nothing like any he’s encountered. She is light—and hope. Barely acknowledging the changes Jinger brings to him, Taj vows Ib will never touch her. Book excerpt: All those who delight in modern Aspen as a ski resort and cultural center, as well as those who enjoy reading about all the old Wild West, will be charmed by this book. In its heyday as a mining town, Aspen rivaled the camps of the California Gold Rush, Virginia City in Nevada's Comstock Lode, and Leadville in Colorado, and from 1887 to 1893 it was the riches silver-mining center in America. Aspen's story begins in 1879 with seven prospectors camped in tents by the intersection of the Roaring Fork River and Castle Creek at the foot of Aspen and Smuggler Mountains. The first great spurt of growth came in 1883, when Jerome B. Wheeler, a partner in Macy's Department Store, bought several claims and built roads and a smelter. The arrival of the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad in 1887 transformed Aspen into a major metropolis by the standards of the day, with some 12,000 inhabitants and services that included six newspapers, two banks, an opera house, electric lights and telephones, a street car system, a waterworks, and schools and churches. The city became home to colorful personalities like B. Clark Wheeler, grandiose promoter and editor of the Aspen Times, and Davis H. Waite, his father-in-law and a local reformer who was elected governor of Colorado in 1892. Rohrbough brings to life the dynamic entrepreneurs such as David M. Hyman and Henry B. Gillespie who made the town and profited from it, the vicious court fights that resulted from mining disputes, and most effectively of all, the atmosphere of a booming mining community. In July 1893 the price of silver dropped sharply and within a week, all the mines in Aspen closed. By 1930, Aspen was virtually a ghost town, with a population of 705. But then a new generation of entrepreneurs discovered another natural resource in this former mining camp. It was snow.
