Book Vietnam era Veteran Health

Download or read book Vietnam era Veteran Health written by Pamela S. Willrodt and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Vietnam War interrupted the lives of the men and women who served and affected the direction of their lives in a multitude of ways. This study examines disparities in health, cognition, and health literacy among Vietnam-era military Veterans during their late middle-adulthood years, ages 50 to 64, guided by the paradigms of life-course theory. The study attempts to remove selection bias inherent in analyzing Veteran populations by limiting the sample to Veterans. The sample was limited to those who completed high school or its equivalency, generally a requirement for military induction. Little literature exists that examines this age period in general, let alone for Veterans. The data used to help fill this gap are from the 2003 National Assessment of Adult Literacy, Health Literacy Component, and the RAND harmonized Health and Retirement Study, version N, and the individual HRS longitudinal files from 1996 through 2010. The main conclusion is that education is essential in these each three analyses in that health literacy levels, early cognitive dysfunction (CD), and self-report of health/access to health are all associated with educational attainment, e.g., education increases health literacy, reduces the odds of early CD, and increases odds of reporting good SRH. Other conclusions are: (1) Veterans in the 50 to 64-year age group have lower Mean Health Literacy Scores than Non-Veterans, (2) Veterans and civilians 65 and older have inadequate health literacy unless health is self-reported as very good or excellent, (3) CD can be detected prior to age 65 using the four questions in the HRS survey, (4) Vietnam Veterans do not have higher odds of transitioning into early CD when compared to those who did not serve, (5) Good/very good/excellent self-report of health is associated with decreased odds of transitioning into early CD, (6) No association was found between Veteran status and self-report of health (SRH) when controlling for the various indicators of socio-economic position (wealth, income, or health insurance), (7) Race was not significantly associated with good SRH in the Veteran population, and (8) Income was significantly associated with increased odds of reporting good health for Blacks, while wealth did the same for Whites. These results suggest that practitioners should be aware of potential issues relating the low health literacy levels, cognitive dysfunction, and the effects of socio-economic position and racial disparities in treating Vietnam Veterans.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through the stories of numerous veterans and the author's own understanding as a mental health professional, A Vietnam Trilogy studies the impact of war on veterans from a psychiatric/psychological, social, and cultural perspective, both during and decades after the violence. The book reflects Scurfield's three-fold experiences in Vietnam, in 1968 as an Army social work officer serving acute battlefield psychiatric casualties; in 1989 when he co-led the first Post-Traumatic-Stress-Disorder therapy group of veterans back to Vietnam; and in 2000, as co-faculty for an award-winning Vietnam history course including three combat veterans. The book offers Vietnam veterans and other veterans a vicarious "healing journey" by relating the experiences of those who participated in these therapeutic efforts; it offers recommendations to veterans and those who wish to help them; and offers ideas on how some important understandings can be shared to the wider public.

Book The Utility of Proximity Based Herbicide Exposure Assessment in Epidemiologic Studies of Vietnam Veterans

Download or read book The Utility of Proximity Based Herbicide Exposure Assessment in Epidemiologic Studies of Vietnam Veterans written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2008-05-15 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fundamental challenge in past studies evaluating whether health problems experienced by Vietnam veterans might be linked to wartime use of Agent Orange or other herbicides has been a lack of information about the veterans' level of exposure to these herbicides. To address that problem, researchers developed a model to assess the opportunity for herbicide exposure among these veterans. The Utility of Proximity-Based Herbicide Exposure Assessment in Epidemiologic Studies of Vietnam Veterans presents the conclusions and recommendations of an Institute of Medicine committee (IOM) that was convened to provide guidance to the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) about the best use of a model to characterize exposure to the troops based on their proximity to herbicide spraying in Vietnam. This book's assessment is guided by four primary considerations: to be clear about what the assessment model does and does not claim to do; to gain understanding of the strengths and limitations of data on herbicide spraying, troop locations, and health outcomes; to consider whether the model locates spraying and troops accurately to consider the potential contributions and pitfalls of using it in epidemiologic studies. Of particular interest in these deliberations were the degree to which exposure classification might be improved if the model were to be used, and the appropriate interpretation of the results of any such studies. In light of the questions that remain concerning herbicide exposure and health among Vietnam veterans and the array of evidence that has thus far been brought to bear on that issue, The Utility of Proximity-Based Herbicide Exposure Assessment in Epidemiologic Studies of Vietnam Veterans concludes that the application of this model offers a constructive approach to extending knowledge about the effects of herbicides on the health of these veterans and merits the initial steps recommended in our report.
