Book Mountain Sheep of North America

Download or read book Mountain Sheep of North America written by Raul Valdez and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2021-11-09 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mountain sheep epitomize wilderness for many people because they occupy some of the most inaccessible and rugged habitats known to man, from desert crags to alpine mountains. But of all hoofed mammals in North America, wild sheep present the greatest management problems to biologists. This book is a major reference on the natural history, ecology, and management of wild sheep in North America. Written by wildlife biologists who have devoted years of study to the animals, it covers Dall's and Stone's sheep and Rocky Mountain, California, and desert bighorn and examines a variety of factors pertinent to their life histories: habitat, diet, activity, social organization, reproduction, and population dynamics. Additional chapters consider distribution and abundance, adaptive strategies, and management guidelines. Discussions on diseases of wild sheep present a wealth of information that will be of particular use to wildlife biologists, including detailed clinical descriptions of conditions that threaten sheep populations, from pasteurellosis to capture myopathy. An appendix reviews the cytogenetics and genetics of wild sheep. North American wild sheep may face extinction in many areas unless critical questions concerning their management are answered soon. Prior to the publication of this book, there was no single reference available in which one could find such a synthesis of information. Mountain Sheep of North America provides that source and points toward the preservation of these magnificent wild creatures.

Book Bioenergetics Of Wild Herbivores

Download or read book Bioenergetics Of Wild Herbivores written by Robert J. Hudson and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bioenergetics is an emerging discipline which offers a more profound understanding of the ecology, behaviour, and evolution of wild herbivores. Increasingly, bioenergetic principles have been applied in management since they provide insight into population dynamics and are relevant to manipulation of habitats and assessment of the impacts of resource development. Growing interest in the agricultural potential of wild herbivores has provided further impetus. In spite of this promise, there are few comprehensive syntheses of the concept and its application to wild herbivores. This volume attempts to fill this need. This book provides a great amount of detail but its expressive aim is to lead us to the whole animal, to a herd, to population as integral parts of an ecological entity which in turn is the result of evolutionary forces. The concept of this book promises the realization of an overdue change in the approach to bioenergetics, to nutrition and husbandry, and thus to the management of wild herbivores: the final emancipation from rules and views based primarily on domesticated herbivores or on experimental animals held under unnatural conditions, necessarily impending them behaviourally, physically, and psychically.

Book Diurnal Patterns in the Spatial Distribution of Female Desert Bighorn Sheep Ovis Canadensis Mexicana

Download or read book Diurnal Patterns in the Spatial Distribution of Female Desert Bighorn Sheep Ovis Canadensis Mexicana written by Ronny Forney and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Desert bighorn sheep are affected by naturally occurring factors present in their environment as well as anthropogenic activity. One ecological factor that affects desert bighorn distribution is topography of the terrain. Studies on the diurnal activities of desert bighorn sheep, particularly in relation to topography of the terrain, are few. A better understanding of desert bighorn sheep distribution may aid in protecting its habitat. This research examined whether there were significant differences in elevation, slope, aspect, profile, and planform of desert bighorn sheep locations stratified by the time of day, for six females. I modeled the terrain using a Digital Elevation Model, overlaid with GIS-based presence data. I employed t-tests, MANOVA, and Repeated Measures ANOVA to compare the means of multiple groups of variables. The statistical tests showed significant diurnal differences, and the visual analyses showed more variability in female desert bighorn sheep topographical locations. The results did not support the null hypothesis -- that there is no difference in diurnal patterns of desert bighorn sheep females in relation to topography.
