Book In Search of a Future

Download or read book In Search of a Future written by Andrea Kӧlbel and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-08-14 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a conversation about youth agency, the most common discourses that come up are of acts of liberation, resistance, and deviance. However, this perspective is fairly narrow and runs the risk of reinforcing pervasive and often polarizing depictions of youth. In order to broaden the understanding of young people's collective actions and their potential social implications, it is necessary to ask: What types of agency do young people demonstrate? This book aims to scrutinize some of the conceptual ideas that underlie prevalent visions of youth as agents of social change and as a source of hope for a better future. As a part of the Education and Society in South Asia series, it provides insightful accounts of students' daily routines on and around a public university campus in Kathmandu, Nepal, and calls attention to a group of non-elite university students who have remained less visible in scholarly and public debates about student activism, youth unemployment, and international migration. By placing different strands of literature on youth, aspiration, and mobility into conversation, In Search of a Future unveils new and important perspectives on how young people navigate competing social expectations, educational inequalities, and limited job prospects.

Book Social Networks and Migration

Download or read book Social Networks and Migration written by Susan Thieme and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2006 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Far West Nepal - an area extremely impoverished also by Nepalese standards - labour migration to India has been an integral part of the livelihood strategies of the majority of people for several generations. This research is based on case studies among male and female migrants in Delhi coming from four villages of Far West Nepal. The analysis focuses on selected aspects of the migrants' daily lives, such as working and living conditions, management of loans and savings, and remittance transfer. It was found, that the whole migration process is mainly facilitated by transnational kin and friendship networks. To grasp the geographical and social dimensions of the migrant's lives an integrative approach in joining the sustainable livelihoods approach, Bourdieu's theory of practice, the concept of social capital and the concept of transnational migration was developed. Further results show, that the majority of the migrants are male. The unskilled migrants occupy a distinct niche, in which men have been working as watchmen and car cleaners for generations. The job market is highly organized since jobs are handed over and sold within networks. If wives of migrants are in Delhi for longer periods, they engage in housekeeping. For financial needs migrants established their own informal savings and credit associations. Although migration is firstly seen as an opportunity by the migrants, it can as well perpetuate debt and dependency and entail that they remain migrants for their whole lives.

It distinguishes different types of migration and looks particularly at marriage migration and the effects of migration on the lives of women.

This book was released on 1981-12-01 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Agrarian Question and Reformism in Latin America epitomizes the emerging tradition of conflict-oriented approaches to problems of economic, agricultural, and rurual development in Third World nations. Drawing on firsthand observations of the agrarian crises in Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Peru, and ten other Latin-American nations, Alain de Janvry effectively blends Marxist theories of world-wide economic development with empirical analysis and policy recommendations. De Janvry offers both a careful examination of the conditions of underdevelopment in Latin America and detailed discussions of the achievements and limits of technological change, land reform, integrated rural development, and basic-needs program. The Agrarian Question and Reformism in Latin America is written for both practitioners and academicians.
