Book Theoretical Aspects of Passivization in the Framework of Applicative Grammar

Download or read book Theoretical Aspects of Passivization in the Framework of Applicative Grammar written by Jean-Pierre Desclés and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1985-01-01 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Passivization is explained by using the formalism of combinatory logic. The agented passive is derived from the agentless as follows: a term denoting an agent is transposed into a predicate modifier and applied to the passive predicate of the agentless construction. The passive predicate consists of two parts: 1) the two-place converse of the active predicate and 2) a zero unspecified term to which the converse predicate is applied. The passive is not derived from but is related to the active. The modifier of the passive predicate is the functional counterpart of the subject in the active. The proposed hypothesis gives an adequate solution to problems arising from various types of passive constructions. Passivization and antipassivization are defined as instances of a general cross-linguistic process involving conversion.

Book Aspect and Valency in Nominals

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contributes to the recent theoretical developments in the area of mutual interactions of valency and aspect, as expressed in different types of verb-related nominal structures (nominalizations and synthetic compounds). A wide range of data from Slavic, Hellenic, Germanic, Romance and Semitic languages provides an empirical testing ground for competing theoretical explanations couched in the lexicalist and construction-based frameworks.

Book The Margins of Society in Late Medieval Paris

Download or read book The Margins of Society in Late Medieval Paris written by Bronislaw Geremek and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-04-27 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the 'marginal' people of late medieval Paris, the large and shifting group of men and women who existed on the margins of conventional organized society. Professor Geremek examines the various groups which made up the marginal world - beggars, prostitutes, procuresses and pimps, petty criminals, casual workers and the unemployed - their haunts in and around Paris, their way of life, and their relation to 'normal' society. Professor Geremek has made with this book a major contribution to the study of late medieval society which illuminates the little-known area of the medieval underworld in a fascinating and very accessible manner. Translated by Jean Birrell from the French edition of 1976, this edition includes a new introduction by Jean-Claude Schmitt, which offers a frank appraisal of the author's life and career to date.

Book The Oxford Handbook of Tense and Aspect

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Tense and Aspect written by Robert I. Binnick and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2011-07-01 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tense and aspect are means by which language refers to time--how an event takes place in the past, present, or future. They play a key role in understanding the grammar and structure of all languages, and interest in them reaches across linguistics. The Oxford Handbook of Tense and Aspect is a comprehensive, authoritative, and accessible guide to the topics and theories that currently form the front line of research into tense, aspect, and related areas. The volume contains 36 chapters, divided into 6 sections, written by internationally known experts in theoretical linguistics.

Book Inner Aspect

Download or read book Inner Aspect written by Lisa deMena Travis and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-09-02 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finishing this book was one of the most difficult things I have ever done. It took far too long from original idea to page proofs and suffered from being relegated to small corners of my life. It was very rarely on the front burner. Since I started working on this topic in 1991, there has been a lot of interesting work done on the areas of the articulation of VP, phrase structure mirroring event structure, the use of functional categories to represent Aktionsart, and many other areas that the research presented here touches on. The hardest thing about doing a project of this size is to accept that not everyone’s ideas can be addressed and not all new research can be incorporated. The only way that I have found it possible to let this book go to press is to reread the Preface to Events in the Semantics of English by Terence Parsons where he writes, ‘‘The goal of this book is neither completeness nor complete accuracy; it is to get some interesting proposals into the public arena for others to criticize, develop, and build on. ’’ My aim in this book is to make connections between various accounts of various constructions in various languages at the risk of treating each of these too lightly. I am grateful to too many people to thank them individually.

Book Verbal Aspect in Discourse

Download or read book Verbal Aspect in Discourse written by Nils B. Thelin and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1990 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the light of growing insights into the universal temporal-semantic nature of aspectual distinctions, today's aspectology has broadened its attention from restrictedly event-defining functions of aspect on the sentence level towards its primary perspectival functions on the discourse/situation level. Hereby it attempts to relate these functions to each other in ways that stimulate consistently language processing on a more solid perceptual-conceptual and pragmatic basis. Reflecting in various ways this general tendency. The 13 papers collected in this volume are oriented to four fields of research: (1) Developmental properties of aspect and tense; (2) Ideo-pragmatic and conceptual-semantic correlates of aspect and the perspectival organisation of discourse; (3) Aspect, case and discourse; (4) and Aspect in literary discourse. The editor's Introduction gives a comprehensive survey of contemporary aspectology and its development towards a proper integration of discourse/situation conditions. Besides cross-linguistic considerations (including English), the languages analyzed specifically are Russian, Bulgarian, Lithuanian, French and Finnish.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These proceedings contain a refereed selection of papers presented at the Second Annual Workshop of the Types Working Group (Computer-Assisted Reasoning based on Type Theory, EUIST project 29001), which was held April 24–28, 2002 in Hotel Erica, Berg en Dal (close to Nijmegen), The Netherlands. The workshop was attended by about 90 researchers. On April 27, there was a special afternoon celebrating the 60th birthday of Per Martin-L ̈of, one of the founding fathers of the Types community. The afternoon consisted of the following three invited talks: “Constructive Validity Revisited” by Dana Scott, “From the Rules of Logic to the Logic of Rules” by Jean-Yves Girard, and “The Varieties of Type Theories” by Peter Aczel. The contents of these contributions were not laid down in these proceedings, but the videos of the talks and the slides used by the speakers are available at http://www. cs. kun. nl/fnds/MartinLoefDay/LoefTalks. htm The previous workshop of the Types Working Group under EUIST project 29001 was held in 2000 in Durham, UK. The workshops Types 2000 and Types 2002 followed a series of meetings organized in the period 1993 – 1999 whithin previous Types projects (ESPRIT BRA 6435 and ESPRIT Working Group 21900).
