Book excerpt: Asmat Art features the world renowned woodcarvings of the Asmat, former head-hunters who live in the western half of New Guinea This book presents a full range of Asmat woodcarving art, but emphasizes the rare early shields and figure sculptures. Drums, canoe prowheads and the larger, more dramatic "objects" are also shown. Together with bisj poles, war shields are perhaps the most famous creation of Asmat artists, and these were carved throughout the region. It is in the design and construction of the shields that the variations in style region can most clearly be seen. Figure sculptures, of varying styles, are also well represented here, and a limited number of the huge ceremonial carvings, such as bisj poles and basu suangkus, have also been included. The cultural context in which these items play their part is described in detail in the introductory chapters. But it is not the intention of this book to be an ethnography. The focus is on the art pieces themselves.

Book A History of Christianity in Indonesia

Download or read book A History of Christianity in Indonesia written by Jan Sihar Aritonang and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2008 with total page 1021 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indonesia is the home of the largest single Muslim community of the world. Its Christian community, about 10% of the population, has until now received no overall description in English. Through cooperation of 26 Indonesian and European scholars, Protestants and Catholics, a broad and balanced picture is given of its 24 million Christians. This book sketches the growth of Christianity during the Portuguese period (1511-1605), it presents a fair account of developments under the Dutch colonial administration (1605-1942) and is more elaborate for the period of the Indonesian Republic (since 1945). It emphasizes the regional differences in this huge country, because most Christians live outside the main island of Java. Muslim-Christian relations, as well as the tensions between foreign missionaries and local theology, receive special attention.

Book Art as Contact with the Ancestors

Download or read book Art as Contact with the Ancestors written by Pauline van der Zee and published by Kit Pub. This book was released on 2009 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Questions about the meanings of non-western art keep intriguing western art-observers. Working towards understanding these meanings, Pauline van der Zee here compares the art, symbolism and mythology of two Papua people ”the Kamoro and Asmat. There are no ready-made and unambiguous answers to be given ”every interpretation is a partial one. For the artist himself interpretation is not always an issue, he follows the traditions of his ancestors. In some cases meanings belong to culturally concealed knowledge, not to be shared with outsiders. Yet sometimes a bit of this knowledge is disclosed. Adriaan Gerbrands (1967), drawing on both the work of Ref. Gerard Zegwaard ”a profound scholar of Asmat culture ”and his own extensive fieldwork, discovered that many Asmat designs can be interpreted as symbols of headhunting ideology. Gerbrands focuses on what he calls the Sheadhunting-nexus : a nexus of related forms which can all be connected to headhunting practices and their meaning in the given cultural context. But in fact there are many more interpretations possible. Art as a medium of contact with ancestors is a recent comparative research focusing on the related, yet different, artistic expressions of Asmat and neighboring Kamoro. The analysis is based on an investigation of the Asmat and Kamoro collections at the Tropenmuseum Amsterdam. The approach taken here emphasizes relationships between art, rituals and mythology. Artifacts perform in rituals and rituals, according to native beliefs, were introduced by mythical heroes. Combining cultural information embedded in myths and rituals with an investigation of various design elements and comparing Asmat and Kamoro data, results in innovative interpretations resonating the intrinsic ambiguity of art.
