Book excerpt: This book examines the marked increase in the number of Asians emigrating to the United States in the early 1990s to identify 1) the role of their hard work played in their migration to America and 2) what the labor market realities were once they arrived. Investigating the labor supply (labor force participation and hours worked) and occupational structures of Asian immigrants in the U.S. labor market, this study argues that not only are diligent people more likely to emigrate to the U.S., but their work habits remain steady. An empirical analysis, using the most recent data set 1990 Census, examines the impact of various socioeconomic variables on labor force participation and hours worked for male and married female Asian immigrants. The tied-mover issue is also addressed for married couples. Why is immigrants' occupational structure different from that of natives? This study answers this question both theoretically and empirically by proposing that employers' discrimination against immigrants andthe source of job market information determine the immigrants' occupational structure. Since different occupations embody varying degrees of social and economic prestige, it is not surprising that an immigrant's occupation directly effects his social network. Book excerpt: This book examines employment, earnings, and income of the six major foreign and native born Asian groups, namely, Asian Indians, Chinese, Filipinos, Japanese, Koreans, and the Vietnamese in the United States for the year 2000. This research makes three contributions. First, it provides an updated analysis of employment and earning attainments of Asian individuals disaggregated by countries of origin, gender, and nativity status using the latest available and most suitable data. Second, it explores the use of a non-parametric technique, namely reweighting, to assess the earning gaps between Asians and whites. Third, it analyzes intergroup variations in household income, inclination to pool resources, and factors associated with the likelihood of forming nuclear living arrangements. The overall findings from this research suggest that - at both the individual and household levels, the differences between the foreign born and the native born Asian groups are more significant than the intergroup variations among Asians.

Over three decades after the beginning of the civil rights movement, and in the midst of significant socioeconomic change at the end of this century, scholars search for new ways to describe the persistent roadblocks to upward mobility that women and people of color still encounter in the workforce. In Glass Ceilings and Asian Americans, Deborah Woo analyzes current scholarship and controversies on the glass ceiling and labor market discrimination in conjunction with the specific labor histories of Asian American ethnic groups. She then presents unique, in-depth studies of two current sites-a high tech firm and higher education-to argue that a glass ceiling does in fact exist for Asian Americans, both according to quantifiable data and to Asian American workers' own perceptions of their workplace experiences. Woo's studies make an important contribution to understanding the increasingly complex and subtle interactions between ethnicity and organizational cultures in today's economic institutions and labor markets.

Book excerpt: Data from the Current Population Survey were used in a unique analysis of migration and economic adaptation in a nationally representative sample of Asian and Hispanic immigrant women. The study describes migration patterns and compares the labor market adaptation experiences of women who migrated with their families and women who migrated independently. The book also examines the systematic differences in migration patterns by country of origin and how these differences relate to labor market performance The findings highlight the considerable impact of immigration policy on the economic adaptation of immigration women. Wives who migrated before their husbands were more likely to be in the labor force, especially when compared to wives migrating after their husbands. In contrast, wives who migrated with their husbands were not likely to participate in the labor force. Interestingly, Asian immigrant wives, were more likely to migrate while married than were Hispanic immigrant wives. Asian wives who migrated after their husbands, earned substantially lower wages than their respective ethnic counterparts (Ph.D. Dissertation, Cornell University, 1995; revised with new preface and index)
