Book Early Encounters between East Asia and Europe

Download or read book Early Encounters between East Asia and Europe written by Ralf Hertel and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-14 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While inquiries into early encounters between East Asia and the West have traditionally focused on successful interactions, this collection inquires into the many forms of failure, experienced on all sides, in the period before 1850. Countering a tendency in scholarship to overlook unsuccessful encounters, it starts from the assumption that failures can prove highly illuminating and provide valuable insights into both the specific shapes and limitations of East Asian and Western imaginations of the Other, as well as of the nature of East-West interaction. Interdisciplinary in outlook, this collection brings together the perspectives of sinology, Japanese and Korean studies, historical studies, literary studies, art history, religious studies, and performance studies. The subjects discussed are manifold and range from missionary accounts, travel reports, letters and trade documents to fictional texts as well as material objects (such as tea, chinaware, or nautical instruments) exchanged between East and West. In order to avoid a Eurocentric perspective, the collection balances approaches from the fields of English literature, Spanish studies, Neo-Latin studies, and art history with those of sinology, Japanese studies, and Korean studies. It includes an introduction mapping out the field of failures in early modern encounters between East Asia and Europe, as well as a theoretically minded essay on the lessons of failure and the ethics of cross-cultural understanding.

Book 1434

    Book Details:
  • Author : Gavin Menzies

  • Release : 2009
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book 1434 written by Gavin Menzies and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historian Gavin Menzies makes the startling argument that in the year 1434, China--then the world's most technologically advanced civilization--provided the spark that set the European Renaissance ablaze. From that date onward, Europeans embraced Chinese intellectual ideas, discoveries, and inventions, all of which form the basis of western civilization today. Florence and Venice of the early fifteenth century were hubs of world trade, attracting traders from across the globe. Based on years of research, this marvelous history argues that a Chinese fleet--official ambassadors of the emperor--arrived in Tuscany in 1434, where they were received by Pope Eugenius IV in Florence. The delegation presented the influential pope with a wealth of Chinese learning from a diverse range of fields: art, geography (including world maps that were passed on to Christopher Columbus and Ferdinand Magellan), astronomy, mathematics, printing, architecture, steel manufacturing, military weaponry, and more. This vast treasure trove of knowledge spread across Europe, igniting the legendary inventiveness of the Renaissance, including the work of such geniuses as da Vinci, Copernicus, Galileo, and more.

Book Asia Materialized Perceptions of China in Renaissance Florence

Download or read book Asia Materialized Perceptions of China in Renaissance Florence written by and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although Ming China was largely inaccessible to outsiders during the sixteenth century, myriad goods washed into the European market via newly established maritime trade routes. China was of particular interest to Europeans as a country that had attained quasi-mythical status through travel narratives such as Marco Polo's tenacious account; it was believed to have superior technological prowess in manufacturing materials such as ceramics and silk, and to be a land of vast natural abundance. Yet, despite the panoply of commodities, there was a remarkable absence of images illustrating China in cinquecento Italy, which was a period that valued accurately naturalistic visual rendering of the natural world.
