Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As part of the advocacy of the Asian Congress for Media and Communication (ACMC) to promote regional studies in global academic discourse, this book contributes to a better understanding of social media within the context of Southeast Asian countries, with the addition of Sri Lanka. The contributors here are primarily Asian academics and practitioners, immersed in the fields of media and communication. Throughout the chapters, the reader will discover that social media has changed the paradigm of communication in the region: as an avenue for free expression; as a tool for news gathering and news distribution; as an aid in crime prevention; and even as a means to find a lifelong partner. For non-Asian readers, there is also an annex that provides a summary of social media statistics in the region to allow the countries mentioned in this book to be situated within the global context.

Book Asian American Media Activism

Download or read book Asian American Media Activism written by Lori Kido Lopez and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2016-05-17 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Choice Top 25 Academic Title How activists and minority communities use media to facilitate social change and achieve cultural citizenship. Among the most well-known YouTubers are a cadre of talented Asian American performers, including comedian Ryan Higa and makeup artist Michelle Phan. Yet beneath the sheen of these online success stories lies a problem—Asian Americans remain sorely underrepresented in mainstream film and television. When they do appear on screen, they are often relegated to demeaning stereotypes such as the comical foreigner, the sexy girlfriend, or the martial arts villain. The story that remains untold is that as long as these inequities have existed, Asian Americans have been fighting back—joining together to protest offensive imagery, support Asian American actors and industry workers, and make their voices heard. Providing a cultural history and ethnography, Asian American Media Activism assesses everything from grassroots collectives in the 1970s up to contemporary engagements by fan groups, advertising agencies, and users on YouTube and Twitter. In linking these different forms of activism, Lori Kido Lopez investigates how Asian American media activism takes place and evaluates what kinds of interventions are most effective. Ultimately, Lopez finds that activists must be understood as fighting for cultural citizenship, a deeper sense of belonging and acceptance within a nation that has long rejected them.

Book Handbook of the Media in Asia

Download or read book Handbook of the Media in Asia written by Shelton A. Gunaratne and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 722 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive handbook profiles the current state of the mass media in all the 25 countries/economies that comprise Asia. Following the customary division of the continent into South, Southeast, and East, the 36 contributors provide a dispassionate and exhaustive discussion of the problems and issues relating to the media in each country/economy. It not only covers the print and broadcasting industries but also the "new" media associated with the information technology revolution. Overall, this handbook describes the crucial features and outcomes of Asia's interaction with and reaction to the rapidly expanding Information Superhighway. A valuable reference tool for educational and public libraries, it will be essential reading for all those involved in mass media studies, international and comparative communication, journalism, advertising, and public relations.

Book The State of Asian Communication Research and Directions for the 21st Century

Download or read book The State of Asian Communication Research and Directions for the 21st Century written by Ran Wei and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-07 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 21st century has been called ‘the Asian Century’ by Eastern and Western academics, largely due to the economic and cultural rise of China and India. This volume explores both what this means for communication research, and the implications of Asia’s rising global power for communication scholars in Asia and from around the world. Hot topics and emerging trends are explored, encapsulating the new opportunities as well as the challenges for Asian communication scholars. Asia represents diverse cultural, economic, social and political systems that shape different media systems in various countries with fertile contexts for communication research. The scope of the chapters in this book includes mass communications, mobile technology, intercultural and political communication, news and entertainment, health communication, public relations, and comparative analyses of mainstream mass communication theories. The articles in this book were originally published in the Asian Journal of Communication.

Book Asian Americans and the Mass Media

Download or read book Asian Americans and the Mass Media written by Virginia Mansfield-Richardson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-23 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asian Americans are the fastest growing minority in the United States comprising nearly 3 percent of the population, yet they are rarely given coverage in the U.S. media, as this book demonstrates. This book, written by an 11-year reporter of The Washington Post who is now an Associate Dean at Ithaca College, is broad in scope and studies the relationship between mass media and this important minority, including: 1) examines the scope and type of coverage afforded Asian Americans in mainstream newspapers through a content analysis of twenty leading newspapers for the year March 1, 1994 to February 28, 1995; 2) examines the opinions of Asian Americans who work in print, radio, and television media both in mainstream media and specialized Asian American media, through a survey asking their negative and positive experiences on the job as related to their ethnicity, and their opnions on how well the media cover Asian Americans; and 3) an historical examination of Asian Americans and media treatment of Asian Americans, and specialized publications serving Asian Americans. No other book has looked at media coverage of Asian Americans as in-depth as this fascinating account of how attitudes towards Asian Americans are shaped in America through questionable coverage of this diverse segment of the population.
