Book excerpt: Youth gangs have been described as one of the most important urban youth issues in society today. Given the permeance of street gangs in economically marginalized communities inhabited by predominantly people of color, youth gang formation, membership, and criminalization carry racial connotations. Compared to other racial groups, however, far less is known on Asian American and Pacific Islander (API) youth gangs, despite long standing gang presence in this community. The absence of APIs in this topic of inquiry implies their experiences can be understood in the absence of racial context which contributes to their problematic representation as the "model minority." Drawing on Asian critical race theory, this qualitative study utilizes a critical phenomenological approach to explore how 30 gang affiliated API youth understand their racial identity and experiences through in-depth phenomenological interviews. Building on an ethnographic pilot study of Asian American gang affiliated youth in a schooling context, findings from this study suggest the unique origin and evolution of API youth involvement in gangs. Specifically, there is a generational distinction when it came to gang membership. Findings also demonstrate API youth rely on various strategies of racial identity construction through their gang affiliation. For example, they embrace racialized stereotypes and ascribe racial/ethnic meaning to cultural practices to make meaning of their identity. Finally, findings reveal API youth adopt the "schoolboy gangster" paradox to navigate the tensions of their racial and gang identity. This experience produces a double life where they play the role of being a devoted son at home and in schools to hide their identity as gang members. This study provides empirical contribution to a group overlooked in gang subculture and bridges the theoretical gap between youth gangs and racial categorization. Additionally, this study offers implications for policy and practice in the field of urban education committed to racial equity and social justice.

Book The Gang of Four

Download or read book The Gang of Four written by Bob Santos and published by Chin Music Press Inc.. This book was released on 2016-02-01 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seattle's Gang of Four changed the face of the city in the 1960s, '70s, and '80s by bringing four ethnic groups together in battle against city powerbrokers over development, poverty, fishing rights, and gentrification. The four leaders learned quickly that working together provided greater results than working apart. This is the story of a powerful political alliance and lifelong friendships forged through sit-ins, protest rallies, and other acts of civil disobedience. "We got very good at occupying buildings," remarked one of the Gang. Bob Santos and Gary Iwamoto recall how a Native American, Asian American, African American, and Mexican American came together to fight for their neighborhoods and their people. Bob Santos has spent most of his life in the International District of Seattle. He grew up in the N.P. Hotel with his widowed father, Sammy Santos, a professional prizefighter. He was hired in 1972 to lead the International District Improvement Association (Inter*Im). During his tenure at Inter*Im, Santos organized property owners, businesses, residents, and activists from the Asian American community to preserve the neighborhood and build new housing. Gary Iwamoto is a regular contributing writer for the International Examiner, an Asian Pacific Islander community newspaper. He has written several plays, notably Miss Minidoka 1943, which was produced by the Northwest Asian American Theater. He and Bob Santos also wrote Humbows, Not Hot Dogs in 2002.

Book The Youth Gang Problem

Download or read book The Youth Gang Problem written by Irving A. Spergel and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1995-06-01 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every day there are new stories of gang-related crime: from the proliferation of illegal weapons in the streets and children dealing drugs in their schools, to innocent bystanders caught in the crossfire of never-ending gang wars. Once considered an urban phenomenon, gang violence is permeating American life, spreading to the suburbs and bringing the problem closer to home for much of America. The government, schools, social agencies, and the justice system are conspicuous by their sporadic interest in the subject and have failed to develop effective policies and programs. Existing social support mechanisms and strategies for suppressing violence have often been unsuccessful. And, state and federal policy is largely nonexistent. In The Youth Gang Problem: A Community Approach, Irving Spergel provides a systematic analysis of youth gangs in the United States. Based on research, historical and comparative analysis, and agency documents and the author's extensive first-hand experience, the work explores the gang problem from the perspective of community disorganization, especially population movement, and the plight of the underclass. It examines the factors of gang member personality, gang dynamics, criminal organization, and the influence of family, school, prisons, and politics, as well as the response of criminal justice agencies and community groups. Spergel describes techniques used by social agencies, schools, employment programs, criminal justice agencies, and grass-roots organizations for dealing with gangs, and recommends strategies that emphasize the use of local resources, planning, and collaborative procedures. There is no single strategy and no easy solution to the youth gang problem in the United States. There are, however, substantial steps we can take, and they must be honestly and systematically tested. Offering a practical and alternative approach to a serious social problem, The Youth Gang Problem: A Community Approach is a major and long-awaited contribution to this dilemma. It is required reading for criminal justice personnel, school staff, social workers, policy makers, students and scholars of urban and organizational sociology, and the general reader concerned with the youth gang problem and how to control, intervene, and prevent it.

Book Street Gangs Throughout the World

Download or read book Street Gangs Throughout the World written by Herbert C. Covey and published by Charles C Thomas Publisher. This book was released on 2010 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This updated and expanded new edition continues the theme of the first edition of emphasizing the substantial growth of street gangs throughout the world. Although a substantial amount of research on street gangs has been conducted in recent decades, much of it has focused on the United States. This book summarizes much of the research being conducted in many other countries where the street gang phenomenon is currently developing, which includes poverty, the retreat of the state, increasing income inequality, urbanization, population growth, exploitation, marginalization, underground economies, racism, and ethnocentrism. The introductory section of the text addresses important topics on the various definitions of gangs and youth subcultures and presents methodological issues concerning the measurement of street gang activity in different countries. The second section offers an overview of the primary studies and most recent findings regarding American street gangs. The third section discusses recent and historical findings about street gangs in Europe and highlights studies in Great Britain, Northern Ireland, Scotland, France, Germany, Belgium, Scandinavia, and the Eastern European bloc. The fourth section provides current research on the Western Hemisphere and focuses on Canada, Jamaica, Brazil, Venezuela, Nicaragua, Trinidad, Ecuador, Tobago, and El Salvador and further examines the influence of American-style gangs on the region. Section five addresses street gangs in India, China, Japan, Hong Kong, and Korea with special emphasis on Russia. The sixth section discusses the emerging street gang activity in Africa and Australia, as well as many of the island nations of the Pacific Ocean. The final section compares gang research from the various parts of the world and projects universal trends. This book provides the most current and comprehensive overview of worldwide street gang activity stressing those features that are shared by all gangs regardless of nationality, ethnicity, or gender, and postulates what the future holds for street gangs throughout the world.
