Book Asian Development Outlook 2019

Download or read book Asian Development Outlook 2019 written by Asian Development Bank and published by Asian Development Bank. This book was released on 2019-04-01 with total page 819 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The annual Asian Development Outlook, now in its 30th year, analyzes economic performance in the past year and forecasts performance in the next 2 years for the 45 economies in Asia and the Pacific that make up developing Asia. Growth prospects in developing Asia remain strong despite persistent external headwinds responsible for moderating expansion since 2017. Global trade and economic activity weakened toward the end of 2018, slowing growth in many economies in the region. The outlook is cloudy with risks that tilt to the downside. A drawn-out trade conflict could undermine trade and investment in the region, and US fiscal policy and the consequences of a disorderly Brexit could weigh on growth in the advanced economies and the People's Republic of China. Though the risk of sharp increases in US interest rates has subsided, policy makers must stay vigilant. Disasters are shaped by natural hazards and the dynamics of the economy, society, and environment in which they occur. They pose a growing threat to development and prosperity in the region, their consequences disproportionately severe in developing countries, especially for the poor and marginalized. As developing Asia is home to more than four-fifths of the people affected by disasters globally in the past 2 decades, the region must strengthen its disaster resilience. This means integrating disaster risk reduction into national development and investment plans, spending more on prevention for a better balance with spending on rescue and recovery, and pooling risk through insurance and reinsurance.

Download or read book Asia Pacific Disaster Report 2021 written by United Nations Publications and published by . This book was released on 2021-11 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication presents a new and extended analysis of the regional risk-scape based on multidisciplinary research conducted. It defines risk hotspots where disasters and biological hazards, climate and health emergencies - including Covid-19 - collide. It further presents the emergence of new systemic risks and cascading hazards, alongside their impacts on peoples and economies. Identifying regional and sub-regional gaps in building resilience into the disaster-health-climate nexus, the report provides tailored, sub-regional insights into opportunities for policy actions and operational solutions to build back better with resilience. The ability to identify and address the unmet needs of those furthest behind within the new risk-scape is also considered here, as is the fiscal cost of a resilience agenda for the region.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Asia and Pacific region has seen tremendous economic and social progress since the 1960s. Yet, the region remains vulnerable to disaster risk that threatens its hard-won gains. Over the years, developing Asia has endured a growing number of disasters triggered by natural hazards. As a result, numerous lives, livelihoods, and communities have been damaged or lost. The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic is testament to the debilitating effects of such a disaster on people, businesses, and economies. Indeed, in 2020, developing Asia suffered its first economic contraction in 6 decades. Now more than ever, the region must find ways to reduce its vulnerability to hazards and build economic resilience.

Book Disaster Risk Management in Asia and the Pacific

Download or read book Disaster Risk Management in Asia and the Pacific written by Ian Davis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-09-04 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book uses two international frameworks—the Millennium Development Goals and the Hyogo Framework for Action, a program focused on disaster risk management—to study the key trends in the region in terms of disaster incidence, sources of vulnerability and social and economic challenges. As both frameworks draw to a close, international debate is taking place during the period 2012–2015 on their current progress. This book seeks to help readers understand the process better. The chapters are written by eight independent internationally based authors. Collectively, they have extensive regional experience in the areas of disaster risk management and climate change as well as working in academia, research, consultancy, the UN and international agencies, government and the NGO sector. The analysis presented benefits from their varied backgrounds in medicine, architecture, economics, engineering, planning, social studies, development studies and political science. Throughout the book, relevant examples, drawn from the region, are included to ‘earth’ the project in the harsh realities of risk and disaster impact.

This book was released on 2019-06-02 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important report was issued by the Department of Defense in June 2019. The Indo-Pacific is the Department of Defense's priority theater. The United States is a Pacific nation; we are linked to our Indo-Pacific neighbors through unbreakable bonds of shared history, culture, commerce, and values. We have an enduring commitment to uphold a free and open Indo-Pacific in which all nations, large and small, are secure in their sovereignty and able to pursue economic growth consistent with accepted international rules, norms, and principles of fair competition. The continuity of our shared strategic vision is uninterrupted despite an increasingly complex security environment. Inter-state strategic competition, defined by geopolitical rivalry between free and repressive world order visions, is the primary concern for U.S. national security. In particular, the People's Republic of China, under the leadership of the Chinese Communist Party, seeks to reorder the region to its advantage by leveraging military modernization, influence operations, and predatory economics to coerce other nations. In contrast, the Department of Defense supports choices that promote long-term peace and prosperity for all in the Indo-Pacific. We will not accept policies or actions that threaten or undermine the rules-based international order - an order that benefits all nations. We are committed to defending and enhancing these shared values.China's economic, political, and military rise is one of the defining elements of the 21st century. Today, the Indo-Pacific increasingly is confronted with a more confident and assertive China that is willing to accept friction in the pursuit of a more expansive set of political, economic, and security interests. Perhaps no country has benefited more from the free and open regional and international system than China, which has witnessed the rise of hundreds of millions from poverty to growing prosperity and security. Yet while the Chinese people aspire to free markets, justice, and the rule of law, the People's Republic of China (PRC), under the leadership of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), undermines the international system from within by exploiting its benefits while simultaneously eroding the values and principles of the rules-based order. This compilation includes a reproduction of the 2019 Worldwide Threat Assessment of the U.S. Intelligence Community. 1. This book was released on 2022-10-01 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report provides the latest evidence on the scale and impacts of disaster displacement in Asia and the Pacific and outlines durable solutions for prevention, response, and recovery. Globally, Asia and the Pacific is the region most affected by disaster displacement. Each year, the lives of millions of people are disrupted by disasters and the scale of displacement is increasing. This report—jointly produced by ADB and the Internal Displacement Monitoring Center—aims to inform policy measures and practical actions to prevent, reduce, and better manage displacement risks. Among the solutions identified are opportunities to bolster community resilience and the explicit inclusion of displacement in urban planning, risk governance, and social protection.
