Book Renaissance of Asia

Download or read book Renaissance of Asia written by Pradumna Bickram Rana and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2012 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A recent study by the Asian Development Bank notes that by 2050, Asia's per capita income would rise six-fold to reach Europe's levels today, one of many indications of Asia's "re-emergence". By then, Asia's share of global GDP would have doubled and it would have regained the dominant economic position it once held some 300 years ago before the industrial revolution. What is less well-known is that during the previous eras of globalization, Asia was also regionally integrated and globally connected. During the 19th and the first half of the 20th centuries, Asia was divided and fragmented. This unique book argues that, led by the economic dynamism and "re-encountering" between China and India, we are witnessing the "Renaissance of Asia". As in the bygone eras, Asia is integrating within itself and the global economy is intensifying, now driven by market-oriented production networks and economic policies. Asia is starting to be "re-centered" as trade and investment relations between South Asia and East Asia surge. Asia's rise is a restoration of the past, not a revolution. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in the economic development of Asia.

Book Evaluating Trade and Economic Relations Between India and Southeast Asia

Download or read book Evaluating Trade and Economic Relations Between India and Southeast Asia written by Medhekar, Anita and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2021-11-19 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Owing to a strong cultural and historical bond, India and Southeast Asia have progressed rapidly. Though there are political and ideological differences between these two entities, it may not hamper the strong bond as there are many common shared values among these nations. The history of these nations identifies that the cooperation between them in terms of trade and commerce is not upheld per the given potential of these nations. In the past, the Indian economy was linked with Southeast Asian countries under the “Look East” policy, which has been re-energized again under the present government. Now, the “Look East” policy is practically more vibrant than ever before with the motto “Act East.” This policy facilitates these countries in emphasizing the importance of better regional connectivity for tourism as well as robust trade and commerce. It leads to a phenomenal growth in terms of imports and exports for these countries. Evaluating Trade and Economic Relations Between India and Southeast Asia sheds light on the trade and economic linkages between India and Southeast Asia and their impact on the nations in the past, present, and for the future. The chapters study whether the win-win strategy works for the strengthening of these countries in terms of both trade relations and political integrity, as well as in facing common enemies across international boundaries. Some of the topics covered include food security, tourism opportunities, trade blocs, trade relations, and economic relations between countries. This book is a valuable reference tool for economists, government officials, policymakers, trade analysts, practitioners, researchers, academicians, and students interested in the policies and relations between India and Southeast Asia that affect trade and the economy.

Book Assessing ASEAN s Performance and Potential Why has it been imperative for ASEAN to embark on a process of reform and reinvention since the regional crisis

Download or read book Assessing ASEAN s Performance and Potential Why has it been imperative for ASEAN to embark on a process of reform and reinvention since the regional crisis written by Sandra Tauer and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2006-10-23 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2006 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: South Asia, grade: 68% (credit), The University of Sydney, course: Dilemmas of Development in Southeast Asia, language: English, abstract: Singapore’s Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong opened the 6thSummit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in Hanoi with the words: "This has been a traumatic year for ASEAN members." Indeed, the financial crisis of 1997 marked the end of an extraordinary decade of internationally oriented economic growth throughout Southeast Asia, and came as a shock for the Southeast Asian countries. Although Paul Krugman had warned that Asian growth, like that of the Soviet Union in its high-growth era, seemed to be driven by extraordinary growth in inputs like labour and capital rather than by gains in efficiency, his was a lone voice in academic discussion. The severity of the crisis inevitably raised the question of how it would affect ASEAN. Ross Garnaut commented that the largest long-term effect of the crisis would be its effect on policy formulation. Since its formation in 1967, ASEAN has occupied a central role in the international relations of Southeast Asia.5It was the first regional organization in Asia, and is a crucial factor in East Asian and Asia-Pacific regionalism. From the beginning, ASEAN’s mission was regional resilience against great power interests. Economic development in the region was perceived as means to ward off communist and ethnic rebellions. However, after three decades of promoting peaceful intra-regional relations, ASEANone of the most successful regional organizations in the developing world-has needed to seriously reinvent itself since 1997. As the Deputy Prime Minister of Singapore, Shanmugam Jayakumar, noted in April 2006: “we have to rethink and remake ASEAN”. According to Jayakumar, ASEAN has to deepen and accelerate the process of integration to stay competitive in the face of the challenges confronting the regional grouping, or face the risk of being marginalised. Furthermore, he claimed that ASEAN must adopt a different paradigm with both bold and practical ideas for the future. This essay will examine four reasons why ASEAN must redefine its future aims, strategies and paths. The first part deals with its failure to react to the financial crisis, while the second outlines its norms, especially non-interference. Parts three and four analyse external factors: the rise of China, the emergence of East Asian regionalism and other geopolitical factors.
