Book excerpt: A reflection on the limits of the construction of judicial decisions from the Edenic Myth Having as its central element the rhetorical analysis of the Edenic myth (Gen. 2 and 3), this dissertation addresses the strength that such narrative has had to forge, both in the West and in the East, a behavior of submission and passivity in the face of authorities that place themselves in the power. It sees, however, also present in the text, an invitation to abstain from the practice of judgments of moral behavior (ignoring good and evil), which is presented as a task of God and not of men. These, according to the author, when they set out to pronounce sentences in relation to their peers, end up expressing prejudices, which are established in society through mechanisms of symbolic violence. At the end, the author, faced with the practical and immediate impossibility of a way of social coexistence without the structures of power and control, among which the judiciary stands out, inviting us to adopt a humbler and fraternal posture when the moment of the decision, with the aim of mitigating the effects of the potential and actual brutality that the sentences tend to carry out.

Following a scaled approach, the book examines different aspects of Ostia's urban landscape, applying Space Syntax's methods for spatial analysis to the urban neighbourhood of one city block - Insula IV ii, selected buildings (Ostia's guild seats), and the entire street system. All through the book a 'Space First' policy has been followed, combining archaeological research with today's insights into urban planning. The heart of this scalar approach is the complete re-working of the archaeological evidence and its interpretative potential for the city block, Insula IV ii. This neighbourhood enjoys an excellent location and boasts a striking variety of buildings including the well-known Terme del Faro, the Caseggiato dell'Ercole, and the Caupona del Pavone, but till now has not been studied in its entirety and within its own social and spatial context. Through a careful reconstruction of the Insula's development over the first three centuries AD, the work fills a lacuna - but more importantly it reveals the way everyday life was structured in the city, and how this evolved over time in response to internal and external influences on the lives of its inhabitants

This book exposes as myths the beliefs that society has become more violent than it has been in the past and that violence is more likely to occur in cities than in rural areas. The product of years of study by scholars from North America and Europe, The Civilization of Crime shows that, however violent some large cities may be now, both rural and urban communities in Sweden, Holland, England, and other countries were far more violent during the late Middle Ages than any cities are today. Contributors show that the dramatic change is due, in part, to the fact that violence was often tolerated or even accepted as a form of dispute settlement in village-dominated premodern society. Interpersonal violence declined in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, as dispute resolution was taken over by courts and other state institutions and the church became increasingly intolerant of it. The book also challenges a number of other historical-sociological theories, among them that contemporary organized crime is new, and addresses continuing debate about the meaning and usefulness of crime statistics.
