Book excerpt: A New York Times Bestseller! Amal has big dreams, until a nightmarish encounter . . . Twelve-year-old Amal's dream of becoming a teacher one day is dashed in an instant when she accidentally insults a member of her Pakistani village's ruling family. As punishment for her behavior, she is forced to leave her heartbroken family behind and go work at their estate. Amal is distraught but has faced setbacks before. So she summons her courage and begins navigating the complex rules of life as a servant, with all its attendant jealousies and pecking-order woes. Most troubling, though, is Amal's increasing awareness of the deadly measures the Khan family will go to in order to stay in control. It's clear that their hold over her village will never loosen as long as everyone is too afraid to challenge them--so if Amal is to have any chance of ensuring her loved ones' safety and winning back her freedom, she must find a way to work with the other servants to make it happen.

This book was released on 2022-04-04T22:59:00Z with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 Yazidi villages have been targets for persecution for centuries, and Kocho was no different. The Yazidis were constantly being pulled between the competing forces of Iraq’s Sunni Arabs and Sunni Kurds, who wanted them to deny their Yazidi heritage and conform to Kurdish or Arab identities. #2 The rest of Iraq was outside of Kocho, and in peacetime, it would take a Yazidi merchant 15 minutes to drive from Kocho to the nearest Sunni village to sell his grain or milk. But when there was fighting in Iraq, those villages loomed over us, their smaller Yazidi neighbor, and old prejudice hardened easily into hatred. #3 The Yazidis were eventually saved when the two farmers they had kidnapped escaped through a broken window, ran through the barley fields, and showed up at home, alive. But the kidnappings didn’t stop. #4 The day after Dishan was taken, Kocho was in chaos. Villagers huddled in front of their doors, and along with men who took turns manning a new checkpoint just beyond the village walls, they watched for any unfamiliar cars coming through Kocho.

Book excerpt: Hala Deeb Jabbour considers her novel, A Woman of Nazareth a mission that stems from her belief that a lasting peace in the Middle East will only come when both sides understand the concerns of the other. A Woman of Nazareth seeks to air out the Palestinian side of the saga and validate the Palestinian people's emotions. Amal, the heroine, is a woman steeped in Middle Eastern tradition seeking to escape to forge a better life for herself and her children. Amal figuratively portrays the Palestinian people-encouraging them to break with the tradition of hate and to overcome the fear of moving forward toward peace in order to create a better life for themselves and their children. It is a moving and captivating novel, a page-turner, which leaves the reader with a better understanding of the tangled web of the Middle East. Learn more at www.zaribah.com

Book A Map of the Divine Subtle Faculty

Download or read book A Map of the Divine Subtle Faculty written by Mehmet Yavuz Seker and published by Tughra Books. This book was released on 2015-04-07 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The heart in the Islamic understanding is the expression of a human being's spiritual existence. It is a Divine gift and Divine subtle faculty bestowed upon humanity. It is a polished mirror reflecting God. Like a general, the heart commands all other bodily organs and faculties, which are its troops, Everything that comes from a human being, whether good or bad, is a product of the heart. Mehmet Y. Seker, a scholar of Sufism and tasawwuf, studies the concept of the heart in the Islamic tradition looking at how it is approached by three prominent scholars and thinkers of Islam: Ghazali, Said Nursi, and Fethullah Gulen. Being the first in English to take as its focus the human heart from an Islamic spiritual, this book comparatively analyzes classical and modern age interpretations and evaluations on the concept and adds to the rich literature of spirituality in the Islamic tradition.

Download or read book Amal ezulu written by Benedict Wallet Vilakazi and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2021-10-01 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amal’ezulu (Zulu Horizons), first published in 1945 in the Bantu (later, African) Treasury Series by the University of the Witwatersrand Press, was the second volume of poetry produced by the renowned Zulu author B.W. Vilakazi. It was written during the ten years he spent living in Johannesburg, in ‘exile’ from his birthplace, KwaZulu-Natal. The poems in this collection represent a turning point in Vilakazi’s life; they express yearnings for the beloved land, animals and ancestral spirits of his rural home, as well as expressions of deep disillusionment with the urban life he encountered in the ‘City of Gold’, and in particular the suffering of the black miners who brought this gold to the surface but never experienced the benefits of the wealth it produced for the mine owners. Vilakazi was deeply conscious of the subhuman system that held these miners in its grip, and gave voice to their suffering in many of the poems in the collection, in particular the now famous poem ‘On the mine compounds.' Renowned as the father of Nguni literature, Vilakazi was both a traditional imbongi (bard) and a forward-looking poet who could fuse Western poetic forms with Zulu izibongo (praise poetry). In these poems he assumes the role of the voice of the voiceless, and gives poignant expression to the stoic endurance of those caught up in the brutalities of capitalist exploitation of African labour, and the appalling injustices of the migrant labour system.
