Book excerpt: On November 28, 1864, James Allen was born in Leicester, England. Allen's father travelled to the United States in 1879 in search of ways to rescue his failing stocking knitting business and support his family. He also planned to live there. Sadly, he was probably killed before his family could come and join him. James Allen quit school and began working because his family was struggling financially. Like his father before him, he started out as a knitter for frames. Then, until his retirement, he worked as a private secretary. He wed Lily Louisa Oram in 1895. Their daughter, Nora, was later born.

Book excerpt: In 1904, a relatively unknown Englishman named James Allen wrote a little book called As a Man Thinketh. The book has become one of the world’s greatest self-help books — “self-empowerment” is a better term — for it not only reveals to us that the keys to success are within our own minds, it shows us how to use these keys to unlock the greatest fulfillment we can imagine. In this revised edition, author and publisher Marc Allen updates this classic, changing language that has become dated or obsolete, and honing the clarity of the message. He makes As You Think gender inclusive, showing how these principles are truly universal and apply to everyone, regardless of sex, age, race, beliefs, social class, or education. As You Think is a simple yet powerful reminder that “all we achieve and all that we fail to achieve is the direct result of our own thoughts.” We are the masters of our destinies.

Book excerpt: Dorothy Jean Hulst, a free-lance writer, had as one of her favorite books As A Man Thinketh, by James Allen. In this short volume, Allen expressed his belief that an individual, through the power of positive thought, forms their character and consequent happiness. Hulst was inspired by the content of Allen's book but tired of the mental exercise required to substitute feminine equivalents for masculine terms. Using a pencil, she crossed out all masculine references, replacing them with feminine words. The result, As A Woman Thinketh, allows women to identify directly and personally with Allen's concepts.
Download or read book The Envy of the World written by Ellis Cose and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2002-02-01 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With a compassionate eloquence reminiscent of James Baldwin's Letter to My Nephew, Ellis Cose presents a realistic examination of the challenges facing black men in modern America. Black men have never had more opportunity for success than today—yet, as bestselling author Cose puts it, "We are watching the largest group of black males in history stumbling through life with a ball and chain." Add to that the ravages of police brutality, murder, poverty, illiteracy, and the widening gap separating the black "elite" from the "underclass," and the result is a paralyzing pessimism. But even as Cose acknowledges the systemic obstacles that confront black men, he refuses to accept them as reasons for giving up; instead he rails against the destructive attitude that has made academic achievement a source of shame instead of pride in many black communities—and outlines steps black males can take to enhance their odds for success. With insightful anecdotes about a broad range of black men from all walks of life, Cose delivers a warning of the vast tragedy that is wasted black potential, and a call to arms that can enable black men to reclaim their destiny in America.

Download or read book Why I Won t Hire Black People written by Asa Leveaux and published by . This book was released on 2013-06-01 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever wondered why certain groups of people are rarely the first choice for employment? Would you rather have someone of a different race provide you with services such as fixing your car, caring for your child or preparing your taxes? Is the only reason there is diversity in your office a direct result of affirmative action? Why I Won't Hire Black People looks at racial profiling in the workplace and presents justified reasons for the common practice. This book places the challenge of being marketable on the shoulders of the applicant rather than giving more fuel to systematic issues that include: a weak economy, globalization, the prison industrial complex or the quality of the public education system. Asa Leveaux, in a labor of love, presents individual process improvements for every Black person that has left an interview or encountered professional rejection without the quality feedback that is deserved. The passion that he has for imparting knowledge to all generations is made apparent with every life story and critique of those that don't understand the ways of the corporate world. The author has gained employment in various fields such as the United States military, Program Manager of a Fortune 500 company, a nightclub go go dancer, serial entrepreneur and factory worker. Why I Won't Hire Black People is a book that has been taken from real life experiences rather than a protected throne room of an ivory tower. This comprehensive narrative's intent is to educate those that not only are they an asset to organizations and customers alike but how to present themselves in a way that identifies their capabilities and demeanors in a positive, professional and proficient way. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book of poems were written in the attempt to get Gods message out, I had a heavenly encounter with God and was taken out of body, mind or spirit I can not really tell which but I know it was for the purpose of uniting all people for the common good. Some of these poems deals with secular life and some are written from a more spiritual venue but as Jesus use parables to explain the good and bad of our actions so have I been instructed to do as well. When we dabble in things that has no profi t only destruction then there is an equal reaction to all actions. These words are the inspired works of God and will truly bless all that read them. They will offer inspiration, courage, guidance and wisdom. If the reader keeps an open mind and let the Holy spirit talk to their subconscious: Gods words do not go away into the void but they accomplish what they are sent out to accomplish. This book will have a universal appeal to all its readers and will give all readers a greater insight into the mind of the author whom happens to be a black man, but more important a child of God. Its purpose is to unite all races to come together as one people. There is no difference between the Jew and Greek, bond nor free, for whosoever calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. I profess we all are whosoever, whether red, yellow, black, brown or white, we are all precious in Gods sight. Read these poems with an open mind and a receptive heart and I guarantee you will be truly blessed by reading them as I was blessed by writing them. May God bless all of his children with good health, happiness and prosperity, is my hearts desire and prayer.
