Book excerpt: History of Arvada: A Photo Journey relates historical details of Arvada, Colorado, as shown in photographs, arranged in a path around the city. The pathway begins at the heart of the city along the property line of founding settlers, Benjamin Wadsworth and Louis Reno. The book is not a comprehensive history, but small bits of history pieced together along a trail that weaves through space and time. The reader first travels through Olde Town Arvada, and views the business center as it developed from the late 1800s. Some stories overlap, and some highlight local residents. One early entrepreneur built an entire block, section by section over a decade, to produce what appears to be one, long building of red-orange brick. Each building holds the history of what happened within its walls. The first bank in town is still a bank. The oldest building still standing, built as a grange, later rocked to tunes as a teen dance hangout. A few walls witnessed murder or robberies. Some walls fell in flames. As the route circles the city, the outline of the foothills brings local folklore to mind. There are visits to truck farms and homesteads as well as one of the first schoolhouses in the Territory of Colorado. Trains, street cars, and buses all play a part in the growth and the changing times of the town. The cover features the Arvada Flour Mill, a business that played an important role in the agricultural community, and is on the National Register of Historic Places. The old mill now houses a museum, preserving history of the area. Building facades may have changed and the businesses within those buildings may have sold, closed, or moved down the street, but the original form of the structures, the bones of the town, can be seen throughout Olde Town, giving this city a charm and spirit which goes back to its beginning. Enjoy the journey through time while exploring the byways of the town of Arvada as it grew into a city.

Book Full Body Burden

Download or read book Full Body Burden written by Kristen Iversen and published by Crown. This book was released on 2013-06-04 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “An intimate and deeply human memoir that shows why we should all be concerned about nuclear safety, and the dangers of ignoring science in the name of national security.”—Rebecca Skloot, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks A shocking account of the government’s attempt to conceal the effects of the toxic waste released by a secret nuclear weapons plant in Colorado and a community’s vain search for justice—soon to be a feature documentary Kristen Iversen grew up in a small Colorado town close to Rocky Flats, a secret nuclear weapons plant once designated "the most contaminated site in America." Full Body Burden is the story of a childhood and adolescence in the shadow of the Cold War, in a landscape at once startlingly beautiful and--unknown to those who lived there--tainted with invisible yet deadly particles of plutonium. It's also a book about the destructive power of secrets--both family and government. Her father's hidden liquor bottles, the strange cancers in children in the neighborhood, the truth about what was made at Rocky Flats--best not to inquire too deeply into any of it. But as Iversen grew older, she began to ask questions and discovered some disturbing realities. Based on extensive interviews, FBI and EPA documents, and class-action testimony, this taut, beautifully written book is both captivating and unnerving.

Book Legendary Locals of Arvada

Download or read book Legendary Locals of Arvada written by Tanya Long and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2015 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unique characters have always made up the landscape of Arvada. Pioneers, ranchers and farmers, business leaders, community-minded individuals, doctors, sports figures, and even a Broadway star have all called home the city on a bluff overlooking Clear Creek. Benjamin Wadsworth was not only one of Arvada's founding fathers but also the town's first postmaster, and he donated many parcels of land for schools and churches to be built in the burgeoning town. Lloyd King, in 1947, opened the first King Soopers grocery store in Arvada. From this one small market grew an empire of more than 100 King Soopers stores in Colorado. Popular radio personality Irv Brown is known as "Denver's go-to guy" for sports talk. Brown coached at Arvada High School during the 1960s, leading the Redskins to 10 conference football titles and one state championship. And two-time Cy Young Award-winner Roy Halladay honed his baseball skills in Arvada as a youth. The starting pitcher for the Philadelphia Phillies graduated from Arvada West High School in 1995. From Louis Ralston's discovery of gold in 1850 along the creek that bears his name, to the present day sprawling suburb, Arvada's people have helped make the town a jewel of the Centennial State.

Book New Frontiers

Download or read book New Frontiers written by Kimberly Field and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last quarter of the 20th century, Arvada moved forward in bursts of fractiousness, fearlessness, and always with a fierce sense of identity. It often involved much "cussing and discussing" as former City Council member and Mayor Vesta Miller put it. The City boldly implemented urban renewal projects amidst the economic booms and busts of the 1980s. Bitter political battles over growth, roads, housing, and zoning sometimes resulted in special elections and recall elections.Whether you were "fir it or agin' it," Arvadans gathered together to watch the parade at the annual Harvest Festival and admire the lighted spruce tree in the town square on cold December nights. Citizens of all stripes supported charities and faith based organizations and energetically volunteered in their community. In fact, the City government itself had more volunteers than staff in the 1980s. The Arvada Fire Protection District was a volunteer force until 2000.Today, Arvada stands on a new frontier. The city spans 12 miles from the established neighborhoods on its eastern boundary on Tennyson Street to the new subdivisions of million dollar homes nestled against the foothills on its western edge. The postwar neighborhoods now are home to a new generation.
