Book Contentious Politics Local Governance and the Self

Download or read book Contentious Politics Local Governance and the Self written by Tim Kelsall and published by Nordic Africa Institute. This book was released on 2004 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Governance Agenda is the framework that currently organizes the West’s relations with Africa. The present work is an attempt to see Governance through the lens of a contemporary, local history. The report analyzes three periods of contentious politics at local level in Tanzania and two multi-party elections. It provides a window on mismanagement in local government, it examines the intervention by national and local elites in district conflicts, and it points to the difficulties ordinary people face in holding their leaders to account. The argument of the report is that current approaches to the study of Governance overlook an essential ingredient for its potential success: namely, the sociological conditions in which forms of collective action conducive to improved political accountability become possible at a grassroots level. The analysis aims to show that economic diversification and multiple livelihoods have given rise to a reticular social structure in which individuals find it difficult to combine to hold their leaders to account. People have fragmented identities formed in networks of social relations, which impedes the emergence of strong collective identities appropriate to effective social movements.

This book was released on 2020-03-10 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims at being a first rendering of the research conducted on the coattails of the SASS Project (Sustainable Agrifood Systems Strategies). The SASS Project was financed by the Ministry of Education, University and Research (MIUR), and it engaged a multidisciplinary team of agronomists, microbiologists, botanists, economists, sociologists and anthropologists. The purpose of the research was to map and to analyse the local nutritional systems of three East African areas – the Arusha's and the Iringa's in Tanzania and the Lake Naivasha's in Kenya – with an interdisciplinary, synergic and interactive approach. The project intends to investigate the agro-nutritional systems both from a techno-scientific and a socio-politic point of view, in order to provide a full overview of the situation by integrating the different results from all the disciplinary fields involved.

Book Sustainable Intensification

Download or read book Sustainable Intensification written by Jules N. Pretty and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-06-25 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Continued population growth, rapidly changing consumption patterns and the impacts of climate change and environmental degradation are driving limited resources of food, energy, water and materials towards critical thresholds worldwide. These pressures are likely to be substantial across Africa, where countries will have to find innovative ways to boost crop and livestock production to avoid becoming more reliant on imports and food aid. Sustainable agricultural intensification - producing more output from the same area of land while reducing the negative environmental impacts - represents a solution for millions of African farmers. This volume presents the lessons learned from 40 sustainable agricultural intensification programmes in 20 countries across Africa, commissioned as part of the UK Government's Foresight project. Through detailed case studies, the authors of each chapter examine how to develop productive and sustainable agricultural systems and how to scale up these systems to reach many more millions of people in the future. Themes covered include crop improvements, agroforestry and soil conservation, conservation agriculture, integrated pest management, horticulture, livestock and fodder crops, aquaculture, and novel policies and partnerships.

This book portrays souvenirs as expressions of culture and as triggers of cultural change. The volume provides critique and theorisation of souvenirs of places, people and experiences in the context of lives lived at the margins of society, politics, tourism flows and urbanisation. Download or read book Women Land and Justice in Tanzania written by Helen Dancer and published by Boydell & Brewer Ltd. This book was released on 2015 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Recent decades have seen a wave of land law reforms across Africa, in the context of a 'land rush' and land grabbing. But how has this been enacted on the ground and, in particular, how have women experienced this? This book seeks to re-orientate current debates on women's land rights towards a focus on the law in action. Centring on cases involving women litigants, the book considers the extent to which women are realising their interests in land through land courts and follows the progression of women's claims to land - from their social origins through processes of dispute resolution to judgment"--Unedited summary from book cover.
