Book The Decolonized Eye

Download or read book The Decolonized Eye written by Sarita Echavez See and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the late 1980s to the present, artists of Filipino descent in the United States have produced a challenging and creative movement. In The Decolonized Eye, Sarita Echavez See shows how these artists have engaged with the complex aftermath of U.S. colonialism in the Philippines. Focusing on artists working in New York and California, See examines the overlapping artistic and aesthetic practices and concerns of filmmaker Angel Shaw, painter Manuel Ocampo, installation artist Paul Pfeiffer, comedian Rex Navarrete, performance artist Nicky Paraiso, and sculptor Reanne Estrada to explain the reasons for their strangely shadowy presence in American culture and scholarship. Offering an interpretation of their creations that accounts for their queer, decolonizing strategies of camp, mimesis, and humor, See reveals the conditions of possibility that constitute this contemporary archive. By analyzing art, performance, and visual culture, The Decolonized Eye illuminates the unexpected consequences of America's amnesia over its imperial history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Philippines is an island country located in Southeast Asia, composed of more than 7,000 islands. It is known for its beautiful beaches, towering mountains, diverse culture, and hospitable people. Its capital, Manila, is a bustling metropolis and serves as the center of commerce, education, and government. The country is also rich in natural resources such as gold, copper, and nickel, making it an important player in the global economy. The Philippines has a complex history, having been colonized by the Spanish, then the Americans, before finally gaining independence in 1946. This diverse history has resulted in a unique blend of cultural influences, with Catholicism being the dominant religion due to the centuries-long Spanish rule. While poverty and corruption remain major issues, the country has made significant progress in recent years, particularly in terms of economic growth and tourism. With its rich culture, warm hospitality, and spectacular natural beauty, the Philippines is a must-visit destination for travelers.

Book The Appeal of the Philippines

Download or read book The Appeal of the Philippines written by José Miguel Díaz Rodríguez and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-06-13 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the different means through which Spain has revisited its ex-colony - the Philippines - since 2000. Focusing on several major exhibitions organised in the period 1998-2017, the ‘poetics’ (narratives and meaning) and ‘politics’ (institutional power) of Spanish representations of the Philippines are critically examined. Even though Spain’s intention was to offer a fresh and updated look at the Philippines through the events organised, there was also a tendency to refer to and recreate a colonial past, posing important questions about the continuity of conceptions concerning the old Spanish Empire in the 21st Century. Díaz Rodríguez further analyses Spanish cultural policy concerned with cultural promotion outside Spain and, in particular, in the Philippines. He considers the Spanish official approach to cultural exchange in the Philippines and the consequences of particular intercultural events supported by Spanish institutions in the Philippines. This is evidenced by unique data gathered from a number of interviews conducted by the author with Spanish and Filipino artists and cultural workers. His conclusions contribute to the understanding of the transnational movement of culture, including cultural representation, arts funding, and the links between politics and the arts.
