Book Henry James and the Poetics of Duplicity

Download or read book Henry James and the Poetics of Duplicity written by Annick Duperray and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-08-26 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Henry James and the Poetics of Duplicity aims to advance the field of studies on the life and work of Henry James by fully exploring the author’s use of duplicity, one of the key literary and rhetorical strategies within the author’s vast and infamous arsenal of techniques of ‘ambiguity’. The collection brings together essays by both long established and more recent Jamesian scholars from eleven different countries, the collective work of whom, through this publication, further enhances our grasp of the ever-elusive literary style of Henry James. The prefatory section of this volume provides a general overview of the myriad uses of ‘duplicity’ in the writings of Henry James. The collected essays are then divided into five sections, each providing an in-depth study of a particular use of duplicity as a rhetorical strategy. The first three sections focus on duplicitous devices employed within James’s works of fiction – including the author’s often underhanded use of undisclosed literary sources (‘Duplicitous Subtexts’), his staging of characters who rely on subterfuge and outright lying (‘Duplicitous Characters’), and his creation of doubles and doppelgängers – another key connotation of the term ‘duplicity’ – both within a single work and throughout his literary career (‘Duplicitous Representation’). The two final sections then focus the poetics of duplicity employed in works of non-fiction by James, including his autobiographies and his reviews of other authors, as well as in his personal writings and correspondence. This includes James’s guileful use of duplicity in his representation of himself, particular attention being paid to James’s late works of self-assessment (‘Duplicitous Self-Representation’), as well as in his assessments of other writers in his reviews or of certain places in his travel writing (‘Duplicitous Judgements’). Henry James and the Poetics of Duplicity would thus be a great asset to scholars of James at all levels, from the student grappling with James’s literary sleight of hand for the first time, to specialists in the field of James who have long studied the masterful art of James’s literary trickery.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "[P]rovides a treasure trove of information that will engage readers intrigued by but new to the subject of art forgery as well as those with an art or art history background." Booklist, Starred Review Forgery is a provocative presence in the art world that captures attention in the press and inspires books about the exploits of famous fraudsters as well as scholarly articles and monographs. But missing until now has been a big-picture look at the phenomenon of art forgery. The Many Faces of Art Forgery provides a uniquetreatment that features historical highlights, philosophical insights, psychological profiles, economic theories, and legal statutes and cases. Key features include: The story of art forgery from antiquity to the present, including 80 named forgers, the tricks of their trade, and the social forces that ensure the existence of their enterprise. How scientific analysis is both effective and limited in exposing art fakes. Multiple definitions for the term “forgery” as applied to art. The effect on authenticity in legal terms, philosophical terms, and public opinion when an artwork undergoes extensive restoration, or artists hire surrogates to make their works, or they appropriate images from otherartists or styles from indigenous cultures. Forgers’ mentalities: their motivations, rationalizations, and strategies. The ethics of art forgery: from criminality to esteem for fooling experts. The possibility and aesthetic worth of a “perfect fake.” In all, readers will understand the substantial place forgery occupies in the realm of art, as well as that what constitutes authentic versus inauthentic is not always clear-cut, nor are legal and moral judgments about forgery. In conveying this message, the author provides a wealth of information in an accessible and engaging style suitable for experts and general readers alike.

Book Jews in an Illusion of Paradise

Download or read book Jews in an Illusion of Paradise written by Norman Simms and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2018-01-23 with total page 553 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These further six chapters of Jews in an Illusion of Paradise now focus on individual exemplary figures and clusters of poets, dramatists, critics, journalists, art historians—Jews whose achievements were once celebrated, but now are almost all but forgotten, not because of changes in aesthetic taste or style but because of social, political and other ideological issues. The book continues to examine the clash between their conscious and unconscious self-presentation as Jews in a culture that wilfully or inadvertently misunderstood or rejected this aspect of “otherness” the men and women represented from the mid-nineteenth to the mid-twentieth centuries. Whereas the first volume concentrated on the themes, images and rhetorical motifs of this awkward status of Jewish intellectuals and artists, here the ambiguous personalities and repressed anxieties of the exemplary figures are stressed. For millennia, Jews were considered outside of normal history, passive victims of persecution; then suddenly, with Emancipation, they fell into history and out of their mythical place in the scheme of things. Everything seemed to crumble into dust and ashes.
