Book Artificial Flies and How to Make Them Classic Reprint

Download or read book Artificial Flies and How to Make Them Classic Reprint written by M. A. Shipley and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A short book on the art of "fly-making" as author M.A. Shipley fondly refers to it, "Artificial Flies and How to Make Them" is a simultaneously informative and entertaining account of the construction, use, and method of artificial flies to be used by fishermen. Shipley, co-owner of a professional fishing and tackling outfit with his father, was well-known in the fishing community, having written several books on the art of fishing, the different types of covetable fish in North America, and (of course) the creation and use of various lures designed to increase the effectiveness of the individual fisherman. Fly tying is actually an ancient art, with the first literary reference dating all the way back to 200 A.D., however, modern fly-fishers (along with Shipley) regard seventeenth century's Isaac Walton as the "patron saint of all anglers." The art of fly-tying involves using implements (such as feathers, ties, hooks, and string) to create a distinctive pattern that attracts the fish and tricks them into believing that the lure is, in fact, an insect. Successful lures are incredibly difficult to create, and as such, lure patterns have been passed down over centuries to teach new generations the tricks of the old. In this book, Shipley details the construction of Hackle Flies, Silk Body Hackle Files, Mohair or Wool Bodies, Palmer Flies, Winged Flies, Reversed Wing Flies, and Scale Wing Flies along with comprehensive illustrations for the beginner fly-fisherman. He then details a list of different flies typically used for the fisherman to attempt on his own. Finally, this short guide ends with a few advertisements for fishery business in the U.S. including Shipley's own business and personalized fishing accessories. "Artificial Flies and How to Make Them" is a step-by-step guide to the art of fly-tying, written by a man who devoted his life to the love of fishing and actively encouraged others to do the same. This book would be great for anyone who is just getting started in fly fishing and wanted to learn more about various types of lures and flies, or someone who had experience fly fishing but wanted some historical perspective on the use of specific flies in the past compared to today. This book would also be an incredible find for anyone interested fly-fishing practices at the turn of the 18th century or the historical art of "fly-making." Book excerpt: Excerpt from Angler's Desideratum: Containing the Best and Fullest Directions for Dressing the Artificial Fly; With Some New and Valuable Inventions Never angle with a small rod, even in streamlets; you cannot drop the fly in with that precision and delicacy at a distance, a long one enables you to do. It ought never to be less than twelve or sixteen feet, not bending at the top, when held horizontally; but, on the contrary, standing out gracefully from the root to thetip, tremblingly alive to the slightest motion of the hand vibrating and felt by it at every throw 'it ought not to be supple in the middle, nor stiff at the root, as most of the rods are that are hollow for reserved tops. The best wood to make them of is hickory, that from some parts of the West Indies is supposed to have the greatest elasticity; but all of this wood, if properly made, are good. Lance wood tops some prefer, but from experience I have found them not so serviceable as hickory, as they often break, apparently from the short grain of the. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Floating Flies and How to Dress Them: A Treatise on the Most Modern Methods of Dressing Artificial Flies for Trout and Grayling A Few years ago I consulted a professional fly-dresser as to the best means of learning to make artificial flies, to enable me to produce imitations of the natural insects sufficiently good to serve as patterns, and was seriously, and, I believe, without "arrière pensée", assured by him that it was impossible for an Amateur to acquire the art otherwise than by taking a series of lessons at a considerable cost. Having always been an unbeliever in the word impossible I determined to try and teach myself. Accordingly, with a copy of Ronalds' "Fly Fisher's Entomology" opened before me, and a few indispensable materials, I commenced trying to puzzle out the mysteries of the craft. After many attempts, and almost as many failures, I succeeded in turning out something remotely akin in form and colour to the Red Spinner illustrated in that admirable treatise, and was further encouraged by finding a grayling sufficiently silly to take this bad imitation.
