He thinks it pleases the common people. The pedigrees of horses, dogs and fancy pigeons he admits have a cash value. And yet far more important for the student of human affairs are the pedigrees of men. By no possible ingenuity of legislation can a society made up of ruffians and boors be raised to the intellectual and moral level of a society made up of well-bred merchants and yeomen, parsons and lawyers. One might as well expect to see a dray horse win the Derby. In offering this Historic Genealogy of our branch of the American Parke family to my kindred, I do it with the assurance that my story is far from complete. Our kinsmen, many of them, in their vernacular - went back or over the mountain in the early days and esteemed it their duty to make, not to write, history. No previous effort appears to have been made toward writing a Parke history, though there are living today members of the ninth generation from Arthur and Mary Parke. Although this work may be crude and imperfect, the compiler felicitates himself that his kindred are not without a history. I most cordially thank my many relations for their very great assistance.
