Book excerpt: A Fragment of Life is a fantasy novella by Arthur Machen. Machen was an author and mystic known for his prominent paranormal, fantasy, and horror fiction. Excerpt: "So, day after day, he lived in the grey phantasmal world, akin to death, that has, somehow, with most of us, made good its claim to be called life. To Darnell the true life would have seemed madness, and when, now and again, the shadows and vague images reflected from its splendour fell across his path, he was afraid, and took refuge in what he would have called the sane 'reality' of common and usual incidents and interests. His absurdity was, perhaps, the more evident, inasmuch as 'reality' for him was a matter of kitchen ranges, of saving a few shillings; but in truth the folly would have been greater if it had been concerned with racing stables, steam yachts, and the spending of many thousand pounds."

Book The Hill of Dreams

Download or read book The Hill of Dreams written by Arthur Machen and published by Bibliotech Press. This book was released on 1907 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hill of Dreams is a semi-autobiographical novel by the Welsh writer Arthur Machen. The novel recounts the life of a young man, Lucian Taylor, focusing on his dreamy childhood in rural Wales, in a town based on Caerleon. The Hill of Dreams of the title is an old Roman fort where Lucian has strange sensual visions, including ones of the town in the time of Roman Britain. Later, the novel describes Lucian's attempts to make a living as an author in London, enduring poverty and suffering in the pursuit of art and history. The Hill of Dreams was little noticed on its publication in 1907 save in a glowing review by Alfred Douglas. It was actually written between 1895 and 1897 and has elements of the style of the decadent and aesthetic movement of the period, seen through Machen's own mystical preoccupations. (wikipedia.org)

Book excerpt: The Three Impostors; or, The Transmutations is an episodic horror novel by British writer Arthur Machen, first published in 1895 in The Bodley Head's Keynote Series. It was revived in paperback by Ballantine Books as the forty-eighth volume of the Ballantine Adult Fantasy series in June 1972. The novel comprises several weird tales and culminates in a final denouement of deadly horror, connected with a secret society devoted to debauched pagan rites. The three impostors of the title are members of this society who weave a web of deception in the streets of London-relating the aforementioned weird tales in the process-as they search for a missing Roman coin commemorating an infamous orgy by the Emperor Tiberius and close in on their prey: "the young man with spectacles". Book The House of Souls

    Book Details:
  • Author : Arthur Machen
  • Publisher : Bibliotech Press
  • Release : 1922
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 336 pages

Download or read book The House of Souls written by Arthur Machen and published by Bibliotech Press. This book was released on 1922 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Great God Pan and 'The White People' are classics of the horror genre, while The Inmost Light is more conventional, but still a damn good piece. A Fragment of Life, the only non-horror tale in the collection, has its tedious sections, but this proves to be intentional as a rendering of the ephemera of life drowning out the beauty. Machen's career, though rarely less than entertaining, eventually descended into lesser material going over the same ideas, but The House of Souls is one of his essential books along with The Hill of Dreams, Ornaments in Jade and The Three Impostors. Uniquely powerful literature from a veritable visionary. (Jim Smith)

Book The Works of Arthur Machen

Download or read book The Works of Arthur Machen written by Arthur Machen and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2012-11-14 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Decadent, perverse and unreal, the strange stories of Arthur Machen uncover a lingering, ancestral horror, distantly remembered in the language of fairy tales, pagan lore, and in the secret old games that nurses teach to children. Deeply controversial in their own time, some of Machen's stories had to wait decades to for changing social mores to permit their publication. This new collection by Lowood Press combines all of Machen's most celebrated works in one volume. Herein are his greatest short stories, including The White People, The Great God Pan, The Bowmen and The Shining Pyramid; his semi-autobiographical novel, Hill of Dreams; and the original, complete version of The Three Impostors, with its interconnecting tales of occult intrigue. An unrivaled master of sacred terror and pioneer of the weird fiction genre, Machen's work has directly influenced such notable horror writers as H. P. Lovecraft, Peter Straub, and Stephen King-but it has yet to be surpassed.

Book excerpt: New York Times Bestseller • Finalist for the National Book Award • Winner of the Anisfield-Wolf Book Award • A Best Book of the Year as chosen by the New York Times (Notable), Seattle Times, San Francisco Chronicle, The Atlantic, St. Louis Post Dispatch, The Oregonian, and Book Page. "Masterful…Evocative and moving." —NPR For twenty-five years, a reclusive American novelist has been writing at the desk she inherited from a young Chilean poet who disappeared at the hands of Pinochet’s secret police; one day a girl claiming to be the poet’s daughter arrives to take it away, sending the writer’s life reeling. Across the ocean, in the leafy suburbs of London, a man caring for his dying wife discovers, among her papers, a lock of hair that unravels a terrible secret. In Jerusalem, an antiques dealer slowly reassembles his father’s study, plundered by the Nazis in Budapest in 1944. Connecting these stories is a desk of many drawers that exerts a power over those who possess it or have given it away. As the narrators of Great House make their confessions, the desk takes on more and more meaning, and comes finally to stand for all that has been taken from them, and all that binds them to what has disappeared. Great House is a story haunted by questions: What do we pass on to our children and how do they absorb our dreams and losses? How do we respond to disappearance, destruction, and change? Nicole Krauss has written a soaring, powerful novel about memory struggling to create a meaningful permanence in the face of inevitable loss. "This is a novel about the long journey of a magnificent desk as it travels through the twentieth century from one owner to the next. It is also a novel about love, exile, the defilements of war, and the restorative power of language." —National Book Award citation

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For Lisa Velthouse’s whole life, Christianity had been about getting things right. Obeying her parents. Not drinking. Not cursing. Not having premarital sex. Vowing to save her first kiss until she got engaged, even writing a book called . . . well, Saving My First Kiss. (This, it turns out, does not actually help a girl get a date.) Yet after two decades of trying to earn God’s okay, she found her faith was lonely, empty, and unsatisfying. So she turned to more discipline, of course: fasting! By giving up her favorite foods—sweets—Lisa hoped to somehow discover true sweetness and meaning in her relationship with God. Until, one night at a wedding, she denied herself the cake but failed in such a different, unexpected, and world-rocking way that it challenged everything she thought she knew about God and herself. Craving Grace is the true story of a faith dramatically changed: how in one woman’s life God used a bitter heart, a broken promise, and the sweetness of honey to reveal the stunning wonder that is grace.

Book The Shining Pyramid

  • Publisher : Simon and Schuster
  • Release : 2015-02-13
  • ISBN : 1633558568
  • Pages : 31 pages

Download or read book The Shining Pyramid written by Arthur Machen and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2015-02-13 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the beginning of his literary career, Machen espoused a mystical belief that the humdrum ordinary world hid a more mysterious and strange world beyond. His gothic and decadent works of the 1890s concluded that the lifting of this veil could lead to madness, sex, or death, and usually a combination of all three. Machen's later works became somewhat less obviously full of gothic trappings, but for him investigations into mysteries invariably resulted in life-changing transformation and sacrifice. Machen loved the medieval world view because he felt it combined deep spirituality alongside a rambunctious earthiness.

Book The House of the Hidden Light

Download or read book The House of the Hidden Light written by A E Waite and published by . This book was released on 2020-04-15 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The House of the Hidden Light (1904) has long been regarded by occultists as a great magical text, albeit one that has so far defied satisfactory explanation. The authors, Arthur Machen and A.E. Waite, were aficionados of turn of the century Bohemian London: both were members of the Order of the Golden Dawn; Machen had gained a certain reputation as a writer of outré supernaturalist fiction, including The Great God Pan (1894), whilst Waite was a talented scholar of magic. Such has been the reputation of The House of the Hidden Light that many investigators, including Aleister Crowley, have sought the key to the book, though none have unlocked its secrets. But now, ninety-nine years after its initial printing in an edition of only three copies, The House of the Hidden Light is published with an explanatory introduction and fully annotated text. At last, renowned Waite scholar R.A. Gilbert provides us with the key to The House of the Hidden Light, hitherto concealed in the everyday lives of the two authors themselves. In his authoritative Introduction, Gilbert reveals the book to be a coded record of Machen and Waite's nocturnal adventures around London. It may not be the great magical text that some had hoped for, but R.A. Gilbert's meticulous research serves to illuminate an important period in the lives of two influential literary figures.
