Jonathan Schneer explores the story behind the declaration and its unforeseen consequences that have shaped the modern world, placing it in context paying attention to the fascinating characters who conceived, opposed and plotted around it - among them Lloyd George, Lord Rothschild, T.E. Lawrence, Prince Faisal and Aubrey Herbert (the man who was 'Greenmantle'). Book excerpt: The true history of the imperial deal that transformed the Middle East and sealed the fate of Palestine On 2 November 1917, the British government, represented by Foreign Minister Arthur Balfour, declared it was in favour of “the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people.” This short note would become one of the most controversial documents of modern history. Offering new insights into the imperial rivalries between Britain, Germany and the Ottomans, Regan exposes British policy in the region as part of a larger geopolitical game. He charts the debates within the British government, the Zionist movement, and the Palestinian groups struggling for selfdetermination. The after-effects of these events are still felt today.

Book Arthur Balfour s Ghosts

Download or read book Arthur Balfour s Ghosts written by Trevor Hamilton and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tells the incredible story of the cross-correspondence automatic writings, described by one leading scholar of the field, Alan Gauld, 'as undoubtedly the most extensive, the most complex and the most puzzling of all ostensible attempts by deceased persons to manifest purpose, and in so doing to fulfil their overriding purpose of proving their survival'. It is an intensely personal and passionate story on so many levels: May Lyttelton trying to convince her lover Arthur Balfour of her continued existence; Myers with indomitable persistence trying to produce evidence to prove survival generally; Gurney and Francis Balfour striving from beyond the grave to influence the birth of children who would work for world peace; Gerald Balfour and his lover Winifred Coombe-Tennant believing that their child, Henry, would be the Messianic leader of this group of children.

Book Promise and Fulfilment Palestine 1917 1949

Download or read book Promise and Fulfilment Palestine 1917 1949 written by Arthur Koestler and published by Read Books Ltd. This book was released on 2011-10-12 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book consists of three parts, “Background”, “Close-up” and “Perspective”. The first part is a survey of the developments which led to the foundation of the State of Israel. It lays no claim to historical completeness and is written from a specific angle which stresses the part played by irrational forces and emotive bias in history. I am not sure whether this emphasis has not occasionally resulted in over-emphasis—as is almost inevitable when one tries to redress a balance by spot-lighting aspects which are currently neglected. But it was certainly not my intention, by underlining the psychological factor, to deny or minimize the importance of the politico-economic forces. My aim was rather to present, if I may borrow a current medical term, a “psycho-somatic” view of one of the most curious episodes in modern history. The second part, “Close-up”, is meant to give the reader a close and coloured, but not I hope technicoloured, view of the Jewish war and of everyday life in the new State. It opens and ends with extracts from the diary of my last sojourn as a war correspondent in Israel. The emphasis here is on life in the towns, with only occasional glimpses of the collective settlements, since I have given a detailed description of these in an earlier book. The third part, “Perspective”, is an attempt to present to the reader a comprehensive survey of the social and political structure, the cultural trends and future prospects of the Jewish State.

  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book Balfour written by R J Q Adams and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2023-03-23 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This authoritative and comprehensive biography of the Conservative prime minister captures a remarkable life. Arthur James Balfour had intellect and charm in legendary abundance. On becoming Prime Minister in 1902, it seemed that he had come into his inheritance as a true grandee. He held office longer than any other Cabinet minister and, in a fifty-year career, dealt with successes and defeats with similar equanimity. A graduate in moral sciences, he was notable for his appreciation of culture and philosophy and several of his achievements, including the Education Act, remain influential - and controversial - today. As ideas of aristocratic power are scrutinised and contemporary politicians increasingly trade on personal charisma and image, Balfour's life and career as an old-fashioned grandee make a fascinating contrast to our current world. This study of Balfour's life and career will be appreciated by anyone with an interest in politics and political history, and those who enjoy high quality biographies. Praise for Balfour: The Last Grandee: 'Written with grace, intelligence and concision... An excellent book' - Philip Ziegler, Spectator 'Chronicles the triumphs and disasters of a half-century of politics with an easy style and well-researched surefootedness' - Literary Review 'Skilfully interweaves his subject's life with the politics of his age in a stylish and readable book' - David Gilmour, Sunday Times R. J. Q. Adams is Professor of History at Texas A&M University, a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and author of many books, articles and academic papers.

Book Eminent Edwardians

Download or read book Eminent Edwardians written by Piers Brendon and published by Random House UK. This book was released on 2003 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his account of four figures (Northcliffe, Balfour, Pankhurst, Baden-Powell), each of them, in their different ways, "monsters," Piers Brendon writes wittily and succinctly--and illuminates an age. Their eminence was global, not just because Britannia ruled the waves, but because they made a lasting international impact: imprinting an indelible media presence on contemporary life; filling the powder-keg which is still the Middle East; leading the emancipation of women; and preparing the younger generation for a world shaped by the ebbing of empire.--From publisher description.
