No longer is our picture of this special brand of early modern devotional practice limited to a handful of venerable saints. Instead, we recognize a wide range of “marginal” figures as practitioners of mysticism, broadly defined. Neither do we limit the study of mysticism necessarily to the Christian religion, nor even to the realm of literature. Book excerpt: The six glorious scenes that make up the Triumph of the Eucharist series by Peter Paul Rubens (1577–1640) are highlights of the Museo Nacional del Prado’s superb collection of Flemish paintings. Completed in 1626, these brilliantly detailed sketches were painted at the behest of the Infanta Isabel Clara Eugenia in preparation for a series of monumental tapestries that are now considered among the finest made in Europe in the seventeenth century. Unfortunately, additions to the wooden supports, introduced after the paintings were created, made the panels considerably larger than Rubens intended and over time caused serious damage to the original sections. With the aid of the Getty Foundation’s Panel Paintings Initiative, the panels have been restored and returned to their original dimensions by the Prado, and the magnificent oil sketches can once again be placed on public view. This lushly illustrated and illuminating volume provides new insight into the history of the Eucharist series of paintings and tapestries and attests to Rubens’s exhilarating art. Spectacular Rubens is published on the occasion of an exhibition of the paintings, on view at the Museo Nacional del Prado from March 25 through June 29, 2014, and at the J. Paul Getty Museum from October 14, 2014, through January 4, 2015.

Writers of narrative fiction, theatre, and poetry were attuned to these debates, and religious imagery played an important role in how early modern writers chose to portray relations between Christians and Muslims. Drawing on a wide variety of literary genres as well as other textual and visual sources – including historical chronicles, travel memoirs, captives’ testimonies, and paintings – Catherine Infante traces the references to religious visual culture and the responses they incited in cross-confessional negotiations. She reveals some of the anxieties about what it meant to belong to different ethnic or religious communities and how these communities interacted with each other within the fluid boundaries of the Mediterranean world. Focusing on the religious image as a point of contact between individuals of diverse beliefs and practices, The Arts of Encounter presents an original and necessary perspective on how Christian-Muslim relations were perceived and conveyed in print.

Book excerpt: Transforming Saints explores the transformation and function of the images of holy women within wider religious, social, and political contexts of Old Spain and New Spain from the Spanish conquest to Mexican independence. The chapters here examine the rise of the cults of the lactating Madonna, St. Anne, St. Librada, St. Mary Magdalene, and the Suffering Virgin. Concerned with holy figures presented as feminine archetypes—images that came under Inquisition scrutiny—as well as with cults suspected of concealing Indigenous influences, Charlene Villaseñor Black argues that these images would come to reflect the empowerment and agency of women in viceregal Mexico. Her close analysis of the imagery additionally demonstrates artists' innovative responses to Inquisition censorship and the new artistic demands occasioned by conversion. The concerns that motivated the twenty-first century protests against Chicana artists Yolanda López in 2001 and Alma López in 2003 have a long history in the Hispanic world, in the form of anxieties about the humanization of sacred female bodies and fears of Indigenous influences infiltrating Catholicism. In this context Black also examines a number of important artists in depth, including El Greco, Murillo, Jusepe de Ribera, Pedro de Mena, Baltasar de Echave Ibía, Juan Correa, Cristóbal de Villalpando, and Miguel Cabrera.

Book excerpt: In Tongues of Fire, Nancy Farriss investigates the role of language and translation in the creation of Mexican Christianity during the first centuries of colonial rule. Spanish missionaries collaborated with indigenous intellectuals to communicate the gospel in dozens of unfamiliar local languages that had previously lacked grammars, dictionaries, or alphabetic script. The major challenge to translators, more serious than the absence of written aids or the great diversity of languages and their phonetic and syntactical complexity, was the vast cultural difference between the two worlds. The lexical gaps that frustrated the search for equivalence in conveying fundamental Christian doctrines derived from cultural gaps that separated European experiences and concepts from those of the Indians. Farriss shows that the dialogue arising from these efforts produced a new, culturally hybrid form of Christianity that had become firmly established by the end of the 17th century. The study focuses on the Otomangue languages of Oaxaca in southern Mexico, especially Zapotec, and relates their role within the Dominican program of evangelization to the larger context of cultural contact in post-conquest Mesoamerica. Fine-grained analysis of translated texts reveals the rhetorical strategies of missionary discourse. Spotlighting the importance of the native elites in shaping what emerged as a new form of Christianity, Farriss shows how their participation as translators and parish administrators helped to make evangelization an indigenous enterprise, and the new Mexican church an indigenous one.

Trabaje con mi ser interior intensivamente para lograr superar aquel estado de inercia que afectaba a todos mis sentidos. Luego de anos de depresion severa y de encierro, me di a la tarea de estudiar, de investigar y de agregar a mi existir elementos que me brindaran pureza, luz y fuerzas para proseguir mi lento caminar dentro de mi angustia existencial. Cuando desperte del letargo me dispuse al proceso de auto evaluarme y autovalorarme, aspectos que parecian ausentes en mi ser despues de exponerme a tanto sufrimiento y a tanta humillacion. Cuando estamos vulnerables olvidamos que hay fuerzas emergentes esperando para actuar en pro de nuestra crisis. Como maestro de Drama, de Educacion Especial con especialidad en Autismo y como actor/declamador de profesion recurri a metodos, estrategias y procedimientos que me permitieran despojarme de aquel dolor emocional. Resulto interesante como mediante la lectura constante, el ejercicio fisico, la practica del mindfulness "aqui y ahora", una dieta balanceada y el buscar en la iglesia que fuese, del pan espiritual, que calma el dolor de la carne y sirve de refrigerio al alma; todo lo expuesto anteriormente me condujo a adoptar caracteristicas de un ser resiliente y hacer uso de la inteligencia espiritual como herramientas de apoyo ante la desesperante situacion que dominaba mi vida en su totalidad. Sin casi percatarme asumi una actitud espiritual convirtiendome en un guerrero del amor, para emerger del fondo en el que estaba sumergido y poder salvarme de aquella maldicion inminente. Te brindo en este texto que fue guiado por Dios, la formula con la que sali del oscurantismo que me llevo a desviar mi vida. Deseo que puedas usarlo, que incorpores algunas de las practicas que establezco y que sea util para sobrepasar tu tempestad o para que estes alerta y prevenido ante las artimanas del enemigo. Es imperante incorporar la espiritualidad en tu diario vivir, como una actitud ante la vida. "Maldito el hombre que confia en el otro hombre", Julio Axel Landron.
