This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1980, a conference on tissue culture of fruit crops was held at Beltsville to summarize the current status of this technology and to stimulate interest in it among research scientists, students, and commercial producers in the U. S. Interest in that conference and the proceedings from it far exceeded the expectations of the organizing committee. Since that time, micropropagation of fruit crops in the U. S. has increased significantly, but still lags far behind applications to production of ornamental plants. Within the past two years, a number of new laboratories have been established and some of the existing laboratories have expanded to a size far larger than any previously anticipated. Creation of new laboratories capable of producing more than 400,000 plants per week will test the ingenuity of laboratory managers and the skills of marketing departments. In recent years, numerous symposia have been held on various aspects of biotechnology and genetic engineering. Although micro propagation is the key to providing large numbers of genetically engineered plants, it is a topic that has been relegated to a minor position, or ignored completely, at such meetings. Accordingly, the time seemed propitious for a conference devoted solely to all aspects of micropropagation as applicable to horticultural crops.

Download or read book Plant Pathogen Detection and Disease Diagnosis Second Edition written by P. Narayanasamy and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2001-08-28 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work provides information on the detection, identification, and differentiation of all microbial plant pathogens - presenting modern protocols for rapid diagnosis of diseases based on biological, physical, chemical and molecular properties. It contains methods for the selection of disease-free seeds and vegetatively propagated planting materials and quarantine techniques for screening newly introduced plant materials.
Download or read book Iron Siderophores and Plant Diseases written by T. R. Swinburne and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of competition for iron in the interactions between saprophytic microorganisms, pathogens and plants has been recognised for almost a decade. This has been reflected i.n an upsurge of publications on the topic over the last five years. Paradoxically, the subject was only touched upon during the International Congress of Plant Pathology held in 1983. In response to this apparent omission, a few of those most closely associated with the topic met one evening during which they resolved to organise a symposium devoted solely to the various aspects of iron uptake and its relation to plant disease. It was my privilege to be asked to undertake the task of convenor. &arly correspondence brought a wealth of positive replies to the proposal, particularly from Bob Schippers in Baarn. With the increasing costs of international symposia the need for a sponsor soon became apparent and an application to NATO was favourabiy received, following helpful advice from Dr. di Lullo, Advanced Research Workshop Programme Director, to whom all the participants in this Workshop owe a debt of gratitude.

Download or read book Plant Mutagenesis and Crop Improvement written by Nitish Kumar and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2024-02-23 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crop improvement using classically induced mutagenesis is now well standardized. Many new promising varieties of different crops have been successfully developed worldwide using both physical and chemical mutagens. Voluminous literature is now available on basic and applied aspects of mutagenesis. The mutation technique has been refined and holds the promise of generating much wider and more desirable variability than classical breeding. Recent advances in technology combined with classical mutation breeding offer new and exciting challenges for the development of new varieties. A global inventory of induced mutagenesis activities for crop improvement is requried. This book covers both basic and applied aspects of mutation and its impact on various crops: it is extremely well prepared and contains a huge volume of information accumulated using classically induced mutagenesis on different crops in different countries. Three key features: Describes the importance of induced mutation in crop plant research and its application to production Highlights new advances in the understanding of plant mutagenesis in crop improvement Contains contributions from major leaders in the field of plant mutation research This volume brings together all the important and relevant literature in the field. It provides a complete account of the mutation breeding of crops, presenting conclusions about the value of the method, its possibilities, limitations, and shortcomings, and the possible difficulties of further application in various crops. The initial chapters deal with the interactions between mutagenic treatment and plant material, such as aspects of mutagenic treatment, postirradiation behavior of shoot apices, and adventitious bud techniques. All available literature is then discussed crop by crop and critically evaluated. This will serve as an extremely comprehensive guide for researchers, teachers, students, and individuals who are interested in using induced mutagenesis as a tool for crop improvement.
