Book excerpt: In April 2012, Endicott College hosted the world famous New York City public arts festival, "Art in Odd Places" (AiOP) on its scenic oceanfront Beverly, MA campus. While AiOP is well established on the New York cultural calendar, each October turning the length of 14th Street in Manhattan into an open air gallery and performance space, this was the first time the event had taken place on a college campus. The aim was to encourage students, faculty, staff, and the greater local community to interact with their environment and each other in thoughtful and thought provoking ways; to disrupt the deadening habits of routine, reveal unnoticed spaces and patterns, and foster a sense of appreciation of the privilege of place. Guy DeBord's term for this interaction of physical and human context was psychogeography, and for 3 springtime weeks, Endicott College was the site of this Situationist experiment. This catalogue documents the exercise, with images of the various installations and commentary by the curators.

Download or read book Hogarth and his Place in European Art written by Frederick Antal and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-11-30 with total page 776 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1962, Hogarth and his Place in European Art attempts to convey the historical relevance, both in its native and European context, of perhaps the most outstanding English painter of the eighteenth century. Dr. Antal applies his method of establishing the close relationship between the political and social history and the arts and letters of the period. Thus, the book goes far beyond the limits of art historical appreciation. It gives a panoramic picture of the first half of the eighteenth century in England with all its social, literary, and artistic connotations. He shows how England, which during those years became both politically and economically the most advanced country in Europe, could provide in Hogarth, in spite of the slender native tradition, the most progressive artistic personality of his time – whose work revealed the views and tastes of a broad cross-section of society. He traces Hogarth’s stylistic origins back to their European sources and analyses his impact on contemporary European and English art as well as the influence he exerted on generations to come. This book will be of interest to students of art, art history, literature, and European history.

Download or read book The Art of Gathering written by Priya Parker and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2020-04-14 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Hosts of all kinds, this is a must-read!" --Chris Anderson, owner and curator of TED From the host of the New York Times podcast Together Apart, an exciting new approach to how we gather that will transform the ways we spend our time together—at home, at work, in our communities, and beyond. In The Art of Gathering, Priya Parker argues that the gatherings in our lives are lackluster and unproductive--which they don't have to be. We rely too much on routine and the conventions of gatherings when we should focus on distinctiveness and the people involved. At a time when coming together is more important than ever, Parker sets forth a human-centered approach to gathering that will help everyone create meaningful, memorable experiences, large and small, for work and for play. Drawing on her expertise as a facilitator of high-powered gatherings around the world, Parker takes us inside events of all kinds to show what works, what doesn't, and why. She investigates a wide array of gatherings--conferences, meetings, a courtroom, a flash-mob party, an Arab-Israeli summer camp--and explains how simple, specific changes can invigorate any group experience. The result is a book that's both journey and guide, full of exciting ideas with real-world applications. The Art of Gathering will forever alter the way you look at your next meeting, industry conference, dinner party, and backyard barbecue--and how you host and attend them.
