Download or read book The House of Fragile Things written by James McAuley and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2021-03-23 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A powerful history of Jewish art collectors in France, and how an embrace of art and beauty was met with hatred and destruction In the dramatic years between 1870 and the end of World War II, a number of prominent French Jews—pillars of an embattled community—invested their fortunes in France’s cultural artifacts, sacrificed their sons to the country’s army, and were ultimately rewarded by seeing their collections plundered and their families deported to Nazi concentration camps. In this rich, evocative account, James McAuley explores the central role that art and material culture played in the assimilation and identity of French Jews in the fin-de-siècle. Weaving together narratives of various figures, some familiar from the works of Marcel Proust and the diaries of Jules and Edmond Goncourt—the Camondos, the Rothschilds, the Ephrussis, the Cahens d'Anvers—McAuley shows how Jewish art collectors contended with a powerful strain of anti-Semitism: they were often accused of “invading” France’s cultural patrimony. The collections these families left behind—many ultimately donated to the French state—were their response, tragic attempts to celebrate a nation that later betrayed them.

Now, this giant of a man has recorded eighty years of his life-and the result is entertaining, illuminating, and, like the tireless gentleman himself, inspiring." -Philippe de Montebello, Director, The Metropolitan Museum of Art Equal to his passion for investing is Roy Neuberger's love for art-which he has collected and encouraged for eight decades. In The Passionate Collector: Eighty Years in the World of Art, you'll follow this fascinating financial figure and great patron of the arts from the streets of 1920s Paris to the museums of New York as he develops the eye of a connoisseur and begins to collect great contemporary art. Vivid detail puts you in the center of the action as Neuberger collects the brilliant artists of his time-Milton Avery, Jackson Pollock, Ben Shahn, Edward Hopper; works with legendary art dealers Paul Rosenberg, Betty Parsons, Sidney Janis, and Leo Castelli; and befriends avid collectors, including the incomparable Duncan Phillips. You'll follow Neuberger as he strives to further the cause of contemporary American artists by exhibiting, lending, and donating from his growing collection, and becoming an activist for the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Whitney. You'll also see how the Neuberger Museum of Art was created at the urging of Governor Nelson Rockefeller, and how it continues to fascinate art enthusiasts today. Part personal memoir, part history of art, The Passionate Collector offers a unique view of twentieth-century American art from a man who has lived it.

Download or read book Handbook of Practical Planning for Artists Art Collectors and Their Advisors written by Ramsay H. Slugg and published by American Bar Association. This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Art is an asset of passion, as author Ramsay H. Slugg begins this invaluable resource, yet it has unique and important financial characteristics. These elements make art possibly the most difficult asset to incorporate into an overall estate and financial plan. This updated and expanded edition of Handbook of Practical Planning for Artists, Art Collectors, and Their Advisors addresses two essential elements of art ownership: planning for the ultimate disposition of the art, including how to incorporate the wealth represented by the art into estate and financial planning; and the practical considerations for owners of the artwork as they actively collect and plan for the art's eventual disposition. Following a brief, general discussion of the art market, the author introduces and explains a client-focused process that can be used when advising collectors. Among the steps in the process includes explaining the income, estate, and gift tax consequences of various options as well as the important and often emotional non-tax considerations of collecting and disposing of art. The book discusses some charitable solutions available as these are often especially appealing options to many collectors and their advisors. As more artists achieve commercial success, their planning needs increase as the financial aspects of their work increases. Further, as artists often leave significant amounts of their work behind, inventory and legacy management become especially significant. This guide considers the unique issues involved when planning for artists, as well as the planning considerations and different tax rules that apply to self-created artwork rather than to capital assets, which is how works of art held by collectors and investors are classified. In addition to providing enlightening case studies, the book looks at the roles of other advisors involved in these decisions. This guide is written to appeal to all levels of knowledge, and accessible not only to trusts and estates professionals, but also for the collectors themselves as well as the many other professionals involved, including art advisors, risk management advisors, valuation advisors, and financial planners.

Download or read book Human written by Garth Clark and published by SF Design, LLC / Frescobooks. This book was released on 2019-11-15 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The animals in Beth Cavener's work are better described as avatars, embodiments of persons or emotions that disguise her subjects. In this way she gives her subjects an expanded identity, pairing each with an animal that, to one extent or another, explains or parallels their behavior. The animal reveals the subject's primal roots and serves as the lens through which we see the evolution of the subject into a modern being. We ultimately come to understand that the human and the animal are inexorably linked together. The dynamism of Beth Cavener's figures comes from the constant shifting in our minds from human to animal. It is kinetic, releasing emotional energy caused by the disparity between what we see--the animal form--and what we know--that this is a human portrait. Thus the fascination in Cavener's art is perpetual.
