Book World War II Arroyo Grande

Download or read book World War II Arroyo Grande written by Jim Gregory and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2016 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On December 7, 1941, war came to Arroyo Grande when two local sailors were killed on the USS Arizona at Pearl Harbor. People from the small town were thrust into great circumstances and quickly answered the call for action. A local storekeeper's son won the Silver Star after he brought his flaming B-17 safely back to base. A valley farmworker served with the famed 442nd Regimental Combat Team, largely composed of soldiers of Japanese descent. Chinese guerrillas commanded by Mao Zedong--the future Chairman Mao--threw a birthday party for an Arroyo Grande soldier. At home, community groups like the Arroyo Grande Women's Club brought packed lunches for their Japanese American neighbors on the morning they were forced to leave for the internment camps. Local author Jim Gregory brings to life the sorrows and triumphs of a dramatic period in local history.

Book excerpt: Located midway between San Francisco and Los Angeles, the Arroyo Grande Valley was founded during the period of the Mexican land grants. In 1837, the San Manuela Rancho was granted to Francis and Manuela Branch. The rich soils and mild coastal climate created a wonderful location to build a home, grow crops, and raise livestock. While livestock production has diminished, it has been replaced by a growing wine industry and field crops continue to flourish. Arroyo Grande remains one of the most pleasant and safest environments to live and work and maintains much of its historic village commercial area with little change over the past 100 years.

Download or read book San Luis Obispo County Outlaws Desperados Vigilantes and Bootleggers written by Jim Gregory and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2017 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: California was a wild and lawless place in the 1850s, and San Luis Obispo County was no exception. Outlaws and bandits passed along the El Camino Real, now Highway 101, leaving a trail of victims. Despite attempts to stem the tide of crime with a vigilante committee and a string of executions, notorious men continued to be drawn to the central coast well into the next century. The James brothers, the Daltons and even Al Capone made their mark here, while lawmen worked to tame this piece of the western frontier. Author Jim Gregory details nefarious activities lost to time.

Book Central Coast Aviators in World War II

Download or read book Central Coast Aviators in World War II written by Jim Gregory and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2014-10-21 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A tribute to the heroism shown by military pilots and aircrew from rural California towns who risked their lives and made their mark on American history. During World War II, thousands of volunteer combat aviators trained at places like Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo and Hancock Field in Santa Maria. Some air cadets and WASPs—young women pilots—lost their lives in training accidents. The graduates would go on to fight in both the Pacific and European theaters. They faced flak bursts and collisions that resulted in horrifying explosions and were sent on strafing runs that made them targets in a lethal shooting gallery. Downed airmen encountered both unexpected kindness and cruel deprivation as prisoners of war. Through interviews and official records, Jim Gregory tells the stories of heroic Central Coast veterans who fought a war that stretched from New Guinea to North Africa.

Book California s Central Coast The Ultimate Winery Guide

Download or read book California s Central Coast The Ultimate Winery Guide written by Mira Advani Honeycutt and published by Chronicle Books. This book was released on 2007-05-10 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The winemaking region encompassed by Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo Counties is hot among those in the know -- and with good reason. A huge variety of the finest wines are only a pour away, and the setting is as dazzling as what's in the glass. Yet, despite its recent surge in popular appeal, the coast retains the down-home feel and roll-up-your-sleeves attitude that made it famous. The wineries of the Central Coast offer the perfect mix of elegant hospitality and warm accessibility -- as often as not, the people who pour your wine in the tasting rooms are not only the winemakers, but the winery owners as well, and they are happy to spend time chatting about their passion. Mira Advani Honeycutt's affectionately detailed text is a perfect introduction to this exciting expanse of vineyards. She reveals how the many microclimates of the Santa Ynez, Santa Maria, Arroyo Grande, and Edna Valleys, as well as the area around Paso Robles, have led to the production of an amazing diversity of varietals by an equally varied collection of wineries. Whether you're looking for a lush picnic spot and a glass of bubbly or panoramic views accompanied by a tasting flight of robust Rhône blends, her helpful tips lead the way. In addition, she reveals the distinctive art and architecture that abound in the wineries, while fine cuisine, fresh produce, and eclectic historical sites are never far away."--

Book excerpt: Beginning with the epitaphs of Civil War veterans in his California home town's cemetery, author Jim Gregory traced fifty veterans to the battlefields of their youth--Shiloh, Antietam, Gettysburg, Missionary Ridge, The Wilderness and finally to the pursuit that led to the surrender at Appomattox. Using primary as well as secondary sources--including diaries, letters and official reports--Gregory describes the sights and sounds of battle, the leaders and the private soldiers, the excitement young men felt in combat and the profound depression many experienced in adjusting to postwar life in stories from the most destructive conflict in American history. Just as remarkable is the postwar story of the fifty veterans, part of a remarkable, restless, and haunted generation, who would find a sense of renewal and purpose in the farms they established in a beautiful valley near the Pacific coast. This is a new telling of the Civil War from the vantage point of young men from Ohio. Michigan, Iowa, New Jersey or Missouri who lived out their lives as Californians. Here, they left the legacy of their war behind for later generations to discover.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE WEIRD SERIES What’s weird around here? That’s a question Mark Moran and Mark Sceurman have enjoyed asking for years—and their offbeat sense of curiosity led them to create the best-selling phenomenon, Weird N.J. But why should they stop at New Jersey when there’s so much that’s peculiar, odd, and utterly nutty across the whole U.S.? So the two Marks—along with several other writers with a taste for the strange—have focused on some key locales, giving each of them the full “New Jersey” treatment. Spanning the breadth of the country, from New York to California, these are travel guides of a sort, but to the kind of places voyagers will never find on their everyday maps. Instead, they’re chock-full of local legends, crazy characters, cursed roads, and bizarre roadside attractions. So come along and join the fun: Some of what’s out there is disturbing, some hilarious, but all of it is unforgettably…weird. Praise for WEIRD N.J.: “They are the chroniclers of the creepy, bards of the bizarre…From abandoned asylums to colorful real-life characters past and present, to folk stories of ghosts, monsters, and aliens, Mr. Sceurman and Mr. Moran have created a journal of New Jersey’s unwritten history.”—The New York Times. “Enough with the head-severing mobsters of Jersey. The state is packed with far more evil than TV could ever invent—from satanic Klan rallies to time-traveling tree farmers. And Weird N.J. has the pictures to prove it.”—Rolling Stone. “Mark Sceurman and Mark Moran see their native state as others do not. For them, it is a demented Disneyland of worldly, and otherworldly, delights.”—The Boston Globe. “If it’s the offbeat, paranormal or downright weird that you crave…there could be no better place”—USA Today. Praise for Weird U.S. “Weird U.S. is delicious armchair reading. Who can resist an ax-wielding man in a bunny suit, a home shaped like a giant shoe, cannibal albino villages, midget colonies, passages to hell or close relations of Bigfoot and the Loch Ness monster?”—San Francisco Chronicle. “Weird U.S. is a marvelous work of entertainment and the basis for a truly unique vacation.”—Library Journal. “Kudos to Mark Moran and Mark Sceurman…This is the book by which future explorers will chart their road trips in pursuit of the meaning of this nation.”—New York Press.

Book A Proposed Streamflow Data Program for California

Download or read book A Proposed Streamflow Data Program for California written by John R. Crippen and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An evaluation of the streamflow data available in California was made to provide guidelines for planning future programs. The basic steps in the evaluation procedure were (1) definition of the long-term goals of the streamflow data program in quantitative form, (2) examination and analysis of all available data to determine which goals have already been met, and (3) consideration of alternative programs and techniques to meet the remaining objectives. It was found that knowledge to streamflow characteristics could not be satisfactorily extended by regionalizing the data from gaged basins by means of regression analysis. This fact indicates that the present data program must continue to place emphasis on attaining the goals that have not been met. A streamflow data program based on the guidelines developed in this study is proposed for the future.
