Book excerpt: This book explores the various connections between Law and Opera, providing a comprehensive, multinational, and multidisciplinary (with approaches from jurists, philosophers, musicologist, historians) resource on the subject. Further, it makes a valuable contribution to studies on law and the humanities. While, for example, the relationship between law and literature has been extensively researched, the relationship between Law and Opera remains largely overlooked. The book approaches the topic from three perspectives in three main sections: Law in Opera, Law on Opera, and Law around Opera.

Download or read book I Think I Am a Verb written by Thomas A. Sebeok and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My writing career has been, at least in this one respect, idiosyncratic: it had to mark and chart, step by step, its own peculiar champaign. My earliest papers, beginning in 1942, were technical articles in this or that domain of Uralic linguistics, ethnography, and folklore, with a sprinkling of contributions to North and South American linguistics. In 1954, my name became fecklessly associated with psycholinguistics, then, successively, with explorations in my thology, religious studies, and stylistic problems. It now takes special effort for me to even revive the circumstances under which I came to publish, in 1955, a hefty tome on the supernatural, another, in 1958, on games, and yet another, in 1961, utilizing a computer for extensive sorting of literary information. By 1962, I had edged my way into animal communication studies. Two years after that, I first whiffled through what Gavin Ewart evocatively called "the tulgey wood of semiotics." In 1966, I published three books which tem porarily bluffed some of my friends into conjecturing that I was about to meta morphose into a historiographer of linguistics. The topmost layer in my scholarly stratification dates from 1976, when I started to compile what eventually became my "semiotic tetralogy," of which this volume may supposably be the last. In the language of "Jabberwocky," the word "tulgey" is said to connote variability and evasiveness. This notwithstanding, the allusion seems to me apt.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "As a glimpse onto U.S. American semiotics through the mind's eye of a witness, participant-observer, architect, and midwife, this slim but rich book fulfills its title." --Journal of Linguistic Anthropology "This book is an invaluable historical, conceptual, and anecdotal account of the rise of semiotics in the United States." --Review of Metaphysics Sebeok, who has done more to establish the field of semiotics in the United States than any other single scholar, here draws upon his personal experiences of half a century to present the achievement and current status of semiotics in this country. He focuses on salient individuals and intellectual issues, including theatre, television, folklore, sociology, tourism, and graphic design. He also examines semiotic applications to architecture, marketing and advertising, jurisprudence, and medicine.

Download or read book Frontiers in Semiotics written by John N. Deely and published by A Midland Book. This book was released on 1986 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Semiotics is rapidly establishing itself as one of the most fruitful and exciting fields of intellectual inquiry. Literary scholars, philosophers, social scientists, and students of linguistics and communication are all finding something of value in the various insights and approaches to knowledge that are included within the general field of semiotics. This significant new collection contains some of the most important contemporary work by modern pioneers in the field together with a few formative statements from earlier thinkers such as John Locke and Jacques Maritain. The volume covers in five parts the nature of semiotics, semiotic systems, various developing themes, traditional concerns of semiotics, and future directions.

Book excerpt: In this series of new and reprinted essays, Sebeok, a pivotal figure in American semiotics, assesses major contributions to semiotics theory, method and practice in America, including the seminal ideas of Charles Sanders Peirce, Charles Morris and other Americans whose ideas coalesced and built upon each other to produce the discipline of semiotics known today. He also illuminates the work of such emigre scholars as Roman Jakobson, Ernst Cassirer and Jacques Maritain, who combine Sausurean linguistics with the work of these Americans, turning the study of semiotics in new directions. Download or read book Augustine Poinsot written by John N. Deely and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While Saint Augustine has been a household name for centuries, the same cannot be said of long-overlooked philosopher John Poinsot (1589-1644). But in Augustine and Poinsot, John Deely contends that the history of semiotics cannot be conceived of without Poinsot's landmark contribution. According to Deely, even though Augustine was the first to describe what the sign does, Poinsot was the first to show how the sign mediates between nature and culture. This revolutionary volume demonstrates how Poinsot's account of semiotics allows us to produce human knowledge and experience.
