Book Architecture for Spain s Recovered Democracy

Download or read book Architecture for Spain s Recovered Democracy written by Manuel López Segura and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-03-30 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historical studies on the involvement of architecture in twentieth-century politics have overlooked its contribution to building Spain’s democracy. This pioneering book seeks to fill that void. Between the late 1970s and early 1990s, Spain founded representative institutions, launched its welfare state, and devolved autonomy to its regions. The study brings forth the architectural incarnation of that threefold program as it deployed in the Valencian Country, a Catalan-speaking region on Spain’s Mediterranean shores. There, social democratic authorities mobilized architects, planners, and graphic artists to devise a newly open public sphere and to recover a local identity that Franco’s dictatorship had repressed for decades. The research follows the impetus of reform and its contradictions through urban projects, designs for cultural amenities, and the renovation of governmental and professional bodies. Architecture for Spain’s Recovered Democracy contributes to current debates on nationalism and the arts, the environments of democratic socialism, and postmodernism and neoliberalism. As a result, it widens our understanding of how peripheral regions may yield egalitarian architectures of resistance. This book is written for students and researchers in architecture and planning, art history, spatial politics, and Hispanic studies, as well as for a general readership interested in inclusive politics in the built environment.

Book excerpt: An investigation of the influences and evolution of modern Spain’s underappreciated, but foundational, architecture. Spain’s remarkable twentieth-century architecture evolved against a turbulent background of revolution, civil war, dictatorship, and transition to democracy. Architecture played a key role in Spain’s struggle out of poverty and isolation, and its search for identity in the modern world. This book examines Spanish architecture from the roots of Modernism in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to the present, analyzing significant figures and their works in relation to their political, social, and cultural contexts, as well as their contributions to architecture as a whole. From the austere, local Modernism of the 1920s, the influence of international trends in the ’30s, the renewed, “Organicist” Modernism of the ’50s and ’60s, to the flourishing public architecture of the late twentieth century and beyond, Spain provides a penetrating account of the country’s rich and varied built environment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the most prominent of a new generation of Spanish architects, this Seville-based team has transformed the practice of architecture with the theory that "a building should explain itself." Through a language of industrial materials, Antonio Cruz and Antonio Ortiz demonstrate their technological prowess while at the same time creating simple geometries expressive of a spare modernism. Their work displays a remarkable ability to fuse the traditional architecture of their native Seville with the novelty of their abstract explorations of form. Works presented include Seville's Santa Justa Train Station, the Madrid Community Sports Stadium, the Huelva Bus Station, and a Housing Estate project in Tharsis. Cruz/Ortiz also contains a complete chronology of buildings and projects and an introduction by Rafael Moneo. The monograph documents the team's impressive work through numerous photographs and drawings, accompanied by project descriptions and commentary. Cruz and Ortiz are the recipients of the First National Prize for Spanish Architecture. Their work has been exhibited internationally
