Excerpt: ...man, was in love with the daughter of one of the press-gang constables. One night he went away to see his lady-love, and found her in tears. )n asking an explanation, she told him the press-gang had got orders to apprehend him and send him olf to the wars. That he might be taken by surprise, it had been resolved to capture him that night; and very likely at that very moment the constables might be at his house. After discussing matters with his sweetheart, it was agreed that he should go and sleep in a neighbour's house, where it was considered unlikely that the press-gang would go. Garrioch went to the house agreed upon, but he had not had time to get asleep, when he heard a loud knocking at the door. He suspected that this was the enemy, so slipping on his trousers and vest he rushed to the other side of the passage. When the constables entered the house they made direct for the room where he had been sleeping, whilst he quietly made his exit. He sped to the hills, half-naked as he was, and remained there in that condition all night. About ten o'clock next morning he met an old woman, who kindly lent him a petticoat and shawl, and in this disguise he went home and partook of breakfast. Subsequently he went out and lay down in a field of oats near his own house. But it got tiresome lying there a whole day, and in the afternoon he cautiously raised his head to see if the coast was clear, so that he might get into the house for some food. The press-gang had suspected that he would choose this field of oats as a suitable hiding-place, and they had been watching it from a distance through a spy-glass. The moment he lifted his head he was seen, and the constables pounced upon him and took him prisoner. A capture af this kind always raised the...

Book Northern Atlantic Islands and the Sea

Download or read book Northern Atlantic Islands and the Sea written by Andrew Jennings and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2017-05-11 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Iceland, the Faroe Islands, Orkney, Shetland and, to some extent, the Hebrides, share both a Nordic cultural and linguistic heritage, and the experience of being surrounded by the ever-present North Atlantic Ocean. This has been a constant in the islanders’ history, forging their unique way of life, influencing their customs and traditions, and has been instrumental in moulding their identities. This volume is an exploration of a rich, intimate and, at times, terrifying relationship. It is the result of an international conference held in April 2014, when scholars from across the North Atlantic rim congregated in Lerwick, Shetland, to discuss maritime traditions, islands in Old Norse literature, insular archaeology, folklore, and traditional belief. The chapters reflect the varied origins of the contributors. Icelanders are well represented, as are scholars based in Orkney and Shetland, indicating the strength of scholarship in these seemingly isolated archipelagos. Peripheral they may be to the UK, but they lie at the heart of the North Atlantic, at the intersection of British and Nordic cultures. This book will be of interest to scholars of a wide range of disciplines, such as those involved in island studies, cultural studies, Old Norse literature, Icelandic studies, maritime heritage, oceanography, linguistics, folklore, British studies, ethnology, and archaeology. Similarly, it will also appeal to researchers from a wide geographical area, particularly the UK, and Scandinavia, and indeed anywhere where there is an interest in the study of islands or the North Atlantic.

Book excerpt: The Orkney Islands are a place of mystery and magic, where the past and the present meet, ancient standing stones walk and burial mounds are the home of the trows. Orkney Folk Tales walks the reader across invisible islands that are home to fin folk and mermaids, and seals that are often far more than they appear to be. Here Orkney witches raise storms and predict the outcome of battles, ghosts seek revenge and the Devil sits in the rafters of St Magnus Cathedral, taking notes! Using ancient tales told by the firesides of the Picts and Vikings, storyteller Tom Muir takes the reader on a magical journey where he reveals how the islands were created from the teeth of a monster, how a giant built lochs and hills in his greed for fertile land, and how the waves are controlled by the hand of a goddess.

Book The Folklore of Orkney and Shetland

Download or read book The Folklore of Orkney and Shetland written by Ernest Marwick and published by Birlinn Ltd. This book was released on 2020-05-07 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The two island groups of Orkney and Shetland have much in common. In each the grey stone houses and treeless landscapes are scoured in winter by stinging gales, and in summer lie under the endless days of the 'simmer din'. Originally Norwegian, they have been part of Scotland for five hundred years, but their many and varied legends, folk tales and customs are still saturated with Norse influences. While this book tells tales and discusses beliefs that are known throughout the northern isles, it also outlines those elements which are unique to each island group. The Folklore of Orkney and Shetland is the standard account of what to this day is one of the richest repositories of lore and custom in Britain. Ernest Marwick not only recounts countless tales which have been transmitted aurally and by writing, but also places these tales within geographical and historical contexts, thus enabling a deeper appreciation of this wonderful material. A bibliography is also included, together with an index of tale types and motifs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pirates! The word is enough to send a shiver through your timbers. A nation such as the Scots, with its seafaring tradition, inevitably has a history of lawlessness at sea. From the earliest times, shrewd sailors realised that, by branching out as government agents, privateers or freelance plunderers, they could make more than just a living. Nautical Scots played a part in the Golden Age of Piracy, in the seventeenth century, most notably in the Caribbean and the Indian Ocean. But the story of Scottish piracy probably stretches back to Roman times and reaches up to the present day. In this exploration of a little-known aspect of Scottish seafaring, Jim Hewitson hauls up the anchor, hoists the Jolly Roger and takes us into some unexpected waters to meet characters such as: Kirkcudbright-born John Paul Jones, founder of the US navy, hero to the Americans, rogue pirate to the British; Sweyn Asleifsson, an Orkney-based pirate who spent half the year as a peaceful farmer and the other as a wild sea raider; and Greenock?s Captain Kidd, the notorious piratical stereotype, who turns out to be more of a naive fall guy than a swashbuckling adventurer.
